Once the couple were officially affianced there was the presentation of betrothal presents, originally known as "Tea Gift". These consisted of tea, a roasted suckling pig cut in half without totally separating the bone, bridal cakes, coconuts, a pair of virtuous poultry, betel nuts, wine and tobacoo. If the groom's parents were dead the coconuts were replaced by laisee. Many of these gifts had special significance like the coconuts and pomegranates which implied the girl would bear many sons. |
