Our Garden at Wilsons

Green Rose Line

When we first moved to Wilsons, the house was green with redwood trim and sat at the back of the lot against the woods. The front of the lot was half in woods and half cleared, with cheap annual grass planted in builder's soil. We moved in October of 1983 and in March of 1984, Steve dug our first patch of garden in the front yard.

First Garden, a small rectable in front of the house.

House and garden, Steve hand dug it and put the cobblestones around it.

In 1985, we put down better grass seed and enlarged the original rectangle. We filled it with annuals and a few perennials. By August, it was a riot of color. Kerosene lanterns were added for evening light in the garden. There were a few additional beds added in 1985 further out in the yard, but there was as yet no formal design.

In 1986, we laid out the design of the garden that has continued through the years. A fan shape lays a short distance from the house, forming a quarter circle. One side of the fan is parallel to the house, the other side is parallel to the driveway. The fan borders the patio on the side parallel to the house.
