The UBS Corp put its best foot forward in 1999. The board and its elected officials developed and became involved in many new programs benefiting the dogues. A comprehensive rescue network was instituted, money for this program is being raised through donations and sales of Bordeaux merchandise. We increased the number of specialty shows available to exhibitors by combining with other show clubs. Regular monthly meetings are more productive. The clamor of outside forces did not cease, but progress within the club remained focused and motivated.
Our 1999 National Specialty show was postponed due to conflicts with dates and judges schedules. We set our sites on a millennium show for 2000.
Preparations for our 2000 national began in late 1999. The club felt all fanciers should have access to this important show, so a middle of the country site was picked. Appropriately, our first choice for judging was Prof. Raymond Triquet; we also extended an invitation to Madame Ann Marie Class and Bas Bosch of Netherlands. All three accepted our invitation. Thus our 2000 show commenced on October 26th, in Christiansen Field, Freemont, Nebraska. It proved to be a memorable experience.
Prof. Triquet gave us a lecture and visual aid seminar after our dinner, which informed and educated all of us. Bas Bosch presented Raymond with the translated version of his book "The Saga of the Dogue De Bordeaux", and the USB Corp was deemed sole seller of this necessary book for all Bordeaux owners throughout the United States.
Unfortunately rumors continue to abound in various circles of this breed. One that concerned all members of the club was the immediate possibility of AKC recognition. To dispel or corroborate these rumors, an appointment was made by 2 representatives of the USB Corp to meet and discuss this admission with Ms Elaine Dorwart, who is in charge of new breed admissions for the AKC. On April 27th 2001 a four-hour meeting took place in Raleigh, NC. The final consensus reached by the USBC and AKC (Ms Dorwart) was the Dogue De Bordeaux, at this time, does not have the consistency within the breed for consideration. Many other topics were explored during this meeting such as our comprehensive registry, the age of our club, the turmoil within the breed stemming from two clubs and finally the education of the public about this breed, just to touch on a few. All members have the right to vote for recognition but as of this writing, the AKC is NOT seeking the Dogue De Bordeaux for admission.
The horrendous act of terrorism inflicted on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on Sept 11, 2001 caused us to cancel our yearly National. Due to the uncertainty of air travel and the general mood of the country. We felt it inappropriate to have a dogue show in light of recent events.
The legacy of the USBC is well documented. It is a club of longevity, despite its many obstacles and growing pains. Its strength relies on its members, board and elected officials. Its growth relies on its integrity, professionalism and honesty. We have had some of the best and most renowned judges in the world come and celebrate our Nationals, our newsletter has a new and more professional look, more input has come from members, our rescue network has improved and funds are available for helping those dogues abused and abandoned. Yet, more involvement is needed from all members. The USBC has made its mark within the Bordeaux world and with the camaraderie of all breeders and fanciers we can and will continue to grow and evolve.
