Vote For Justice William Cousins Jr.

The Illinois Supreme Court touches your life in many ways. Its decisions affect your schools, personal security, health care, taxes, transportation, privacy and human rights. No office in Illinois calls for a person of greater integrity, independence, understanding of the law and concern for your rights as a citizen. That's why William Cousins Jr. is supremely qualified for the job. No other candidate for the office has his unique combination of experience and independence.

Bill Cousins' long career in public service has been devoted to the pursuit of justice for all under the law. Today he's a highly honored judge with 23 years of distinguished service on the Appellate and Circuit Courts—where he was elected as an Independent Democrat and a powerful advocate of judicial reform. For a full decade earlier, he was an outspoken, independent Alderman, leading the fight for human rights, better schools, consumers and the elderly.

He is Presiding Judge of the Illinois Appellate Court, 1st District, Second Division, and a board member of the National Center for State Courts. The Illinois Supreme Court appointed Bill Cousins to the Executive Committee of the Illinois Judicial Conference in 1983 and named him Chairman for 1989-90. He was Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Illinois Appellate Court, 1st District; Chairman of the Illinois Judicial Council and the Judicial Council of the National Bar Association.

Born in Mississippi, his family moved to Chicago when he was 11. He went on to graduate from DuSable High School, the University of Illinois—then Harvard Law School. He is a combat veteran of the Korean War and retired from the U.S. Army Reserve Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps. He served as an assistant Statešs Attorney as well as in corporate law and private practice. He has been married for 46 years to his wife, Hiroko, and has four adult children.
