Established in 1784, the Diocese of Massachusetts
is the largest in the Episcopal Church, in terms of membership,
with 87,448 baptized members and 58,236 communicants in 195 parishes and
missions.
The diocese covers the eastern third of Massachusetts,
from the New Hampshire border in the north, to the Cape and islands in
the south, and extending as far west as (but not including) Worcester County.
The diocese includes Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Essex, Norfolk, Middlesex,
Nantucket, Plymouth and Suffolk Counties, and the town of Southboro in
Worcester County.
The Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, S.S.J.E. is
the bishop of the diocese. Elected bishop coadjutor in March 1994 and consecrated
in September 1994, Bishop Shaw succeeded the late Bishop David E. Johnson
in January 1995 to become the 15th diocesan bishop.
The Rt. Rev. Barbara C. Harris is the diocese's
suffragan (assistant) bishop. Bishop Harris, the first woman to be consecrated
a bishop in the Anglican Communion, was elected suffragan bishop in September
1988 and consecrated in February 1989.
There are 580 licensed or canonically resident priests
active in the Diocese of Massachusetts. Of that number, 133 are women -
56 of whom currently serve in parishes as rectors or assistants.
People of every size, shape, color, and background make
this Diocese their spiritual home. If you do not now have a church, we
invite you to visit one of our churches by using the parish directory
