Doctor Profiles
Robert J. Bettini, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Attended New York University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He received his M.D. degree from Georgetown
University in 1965 and interned at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. After completing a residency at Georgetown University Hospital in 1969, he
served two years in the Navy before entering private practice. He is Board Certified and a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists. Outside of our practice, Dr. Bettini also serves as a member of the Virginia Board of Medicine.
He and his wife have four children.

Janice J. Emery, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Attended the University of Iowa, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and received a B.S. degree with Highest Distinction in 1970.
As a licensed Medical Technologist she worked a year before entering the University of Iowa College
of Medicine in Iowa City, Iowa where she received her M.D. degree in 1975. She completed a four-year residency in Obstetrics
and Gynecology at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York in 1979. Dr. Emery is Board Certified and a Fellow of the Amercan College of
Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She and her husband have two children.

Peter A. Khamvongsa, M.D., F.A.C.O.G., F.A.C.S
Dr. Peter A. Khamvongsa was born in Washington DC, but spent fifteen years of his childhood in Puerto Rico.
He returned to Washington DC to attend Georgetown University, and obtained his Bachelor's degree, graduating Cum
Laude in 1987. Due to outstanding academic performance, Dr. Khamvongsa received an early acceptance to
Georgetown University School of Medicine, from which he graduated with honors in 1991. He subsequently completed
his internship and residency at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland; as a Galloway Fellow he
spent three months in the Gynecologic Oncology service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Over the past four years, he has worked with the United States Navy overseas and in Bethesda Naval Hospital,
where he served as Chief of the Division of Ambulatory Obstetrics and Gynecology, Director of the Colposcopy and
Minimally Invasive Clinic, and as Assistant Professor of OB GYN. Dr. Khamvongsa is board certified and is a
Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Khamvongsa is married. He is fluent in Spanish and French.

Karen Gurian, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.
Originally from Chicago, Dr. Karen Gurian has been practicing Obstetrics and
Gynecology in the Northern Virginia area since 1995. She completed all of
her medical training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, graduating
from the Mayo Medical School in 1988. A two-year research fellowship was
followed by residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology. After becoming a chief
resident in 1994, Dr. Gurian joined the faculty at the Mayo Clinic prior to
moving to Virginia. She is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and
a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists.
Dr. Gurian greatly enjoys working with women of all ages. Particular areas
of interest include normal pregnancy and delivery, breast feeding, vaginal
birth after cesarean, well woman care, diagnosis and treatment of cervical
disorders, and menopause.
Dr. Gurian is married to Josef E. Gurian, M.D. (Ear, Nose and Throat), and
has three children.
