Issue 12 September, 1996 DIRECTOR'SCOLUMN With two remaining Regional Training Conferences scheduled over the next two months, we have entered another phase in our drive to improve the quality of FMCS services and their delivery to our labor and management customers. The agendas for these events offer opportunities for our mediators to expand their skills, increase productivity and learn more about effective techniques for outreach and education. The conferences include distinctive speakers who bring us widely varied perspectives on the work we do and the changing environment in which we work. And we'll have the chance to learn from each other through workshops and focus group sessions. I am impressed with the thoughtful planning and detail that went into the development of each conference. I have enjoyed the candid discussions I have had at the three conferences which have already been held and I look forward to participating in the two upcoming conferences. Planning has already begun on a National Training Seminar to take place in fiscal year 1997. A combination of regional and national events provides possibilities for a variety of professional development training that can help all of us increase our knowledge and skills, and thereby improve our ability to deliver high quality mediation services to the labor-management and conflict resolution community. * * * * * * * * * * It's never easy to say goodbye to a friend. And when a friend has been a trusted confidant and advisor, it's even more difficult. Floyd Wood is a dear friend, to me and to everyone at FMCS. His decision to retire is bittersweet because his health has made the decision inescapable. And we understand that leaving FMCS was one of most difficult decisions he has ever faced. At the same time, we know that retirement will allow him the time and focus to regain his good health, and for that, we can all be grateful. Few of us are blessed with the opportunity to place our mark on the institutions we serve, to leave them better than when we came. Floyd leaves an indelible mark on FMCS. His spirit and commitment have made a difference to our mission, to the FMCS family, from our field mediators and leadership to National Office employees, to improving the quality of our services and increasing our value to the nation's labor-management community. It is an impressive legacy. Floyd Wood is a consummate professional. He is a gentleman. He is my friend and I will miss him. FMCS will miss him. John Calhoun Wells |
