The Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island

Arthur Dobrin was born in Brooklyn in 1943. He met Lyn in 1961, and they were married three yers later. He earned his B.A. in history at CCNY, his M.A. in human relations at NYU, and his DSW from Adelphi University School of Social Work; he also completed studies in family psychotherapy at the Ackerman Family Institute. From 1965 to 1967, Arthur and Lyn worked in Kisii Kenya, as Peace Corp volunteers. In 1967, Arthur Joined the Ethical Movement and since 1968, has served as leader of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island. Arthur and Lyn live in Westbury, Long Island, and each summer conducts tours of Kenya. He and Lyn co-lead an Amnesty International chapter; they co-authored Convictions; Political Prisioners -- Their Stories (1981). Arthur is also the president of the board of a drug and alcohol treatment program and an adjunct associate professor of social science at Hofstra University's New College. He is the author of seven other non-fiction works, including A History of Black Jews in America (1985), The Role of Agrarian Cooperatives in the Development of Kenya (1970), Getting Married the Way You Want (1974), Little Heroes (1977), The God Within (1977), Love Is Stronger Than Death (1986), and The Ethical Judgements of Social Workers (1988); a novel, Salted with Fire (1990); two plays, Mirrors (1989) and Murder Joints and Manikins (1990); and six poetry collections: Sunbird (1976), Saying My Name Out Loud (1978), Lace: Poetry from the Poor, the Homeless, the Aged, the Physically and Emotionally Disabled (1979), Gentle Spears (Talking Book: chapbook, 1980; audiocassette, 1982), Out of Place (1982), and Angles & Chambers (1980).
