Support the Ethical Movement Into the Future
A "planned gift" is a charitable gift legally arranged by an individual during his or her lifetime, but which does not usually benefit the charitable organization until some future time, usually at the demise of the donor or surviving loved ones.

Types of Planned Gifts
- Wills. The most simple and widely used planned gift is a bequest in a Last Will and Testament.
No matter what the size of your estate, if you want to provide for relatives, friends and charitable organizations, you need a Will (or a Revocable Living Trust). If you die without one, you lose the right to control the disposition of your assets.
A charitable bequest to the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island can be a sum of money or other property. It can be all or a portion of what remains after other gifts have been made. If the Society is named as a contingent beneficiary, it will receive your gift only if a primary beneficiary does not survive you.
Your Will can designate that your charitable bequest may be used for general purposes of for the creation or continuance of special programs. In either case, the estate tax savings produced by the charitable bequest will greatly reduce the cost to your family members of providing the charitable contribution.

- Gifts of Life Insurance. Do you have a life insurance policy, which is no longer required for its original purpose? If you designate the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island as the beneficiary but retain ownership of the policy, the Society will receive the proceeds of the policy and your estate will receive a charitable deduction for the full value of the policy. By transferring the ownership and beneficiary designation to the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island during your life, you will not only enable the Society to receive the proceeds of the policy, you will also receive an income tax charitable deduction for the cash surrender value of the policy in the year contributed, your family will receive all of your remaining assets under your Will and the value of your estate will be reduced for estate tax purposes because you no longer own the policy. If premiums remain to be paid on the policy, you can make a tax-deductible contribution to the Society, which can then use the contribution to pay premiums on the policy it then owns.

- Gifts of Real Estate. You can donate real property to the Society but retain for yourself or your heirs the right to the exclusive use of the property for your lifetime or for a specified term. Property can be in the form of vacant land, your primary or secondary residence. A gift of a present or future interest in real estate generates a current income tax deduction for the fair market value of the property or the remainder interest. In addition, the contributed property will be excluded from your estate for estate tax purposes.

- Charitable Remainder Trusts. Charitable Remainder Trusts can provide income for one or more beneficiaries with the remainder passing to the Ethical Humanist Society. Charitable Remainder Trusts include Unitrusts and Annuity Trusts. A Unitrust pays a beneficiary a fixed amount of income based upon a percentage of the original value of the donated assets

- Gift of Appreciated Securities and Personal Property. Do you own shares of stock, which have appreciated substantially since you purchased them? A gift of such securities will entitle you to an income tax charitable deduction equal to the value of the securities at the time you make the gift. In addition, you will not have to pay any capital gains tax on the contributed property. A gift of such property during your life will also reduce the value of your estate and the potential resultant estate taxes.
