The International Reading Association (IRA) with a membership of over 93,000 individuals and institutions in more than 100 countries ventured into the world of online publishing in May of 1996 with the first issue of Reading Online (www.readingonline.org). This peer-reviewed professional journal, was the first new serial publication to be developed by the IRA in over 20 years. Authors were encouraged to use Reading Online (ROL) to explore new styles of academic writing, to participate with readers in discussion forums attached to each article, and to expand their networks of professional contacts. While the future of journals like ROL seem to be assured, there are many challenges in developing a credible and readable electronic professional reading journal.
