Interactions of Student Partners in a High School Astronomy Computer Lab

Hilary McLellan
Computers in the Schools, Vol 11, No. 1, 1994, p. 29-41

This study examined the patterns of interactions of student partners engaged in problem-solving activities while working through computer simulation activities in an astronomy lab. The results showed that in most of the student pairs one partner interacted substantially more with the computer via keyboard and joystick than did the other partner. This partner also gave more help to the other member. This implies that teachers should structure assignments for however many students are in a group, rather than for individuals. This will allow all students to make substantive contributions to the assignment.
