T.H.E. Journal, Sept. 1995, p. 87-90
This paper describes a project by Florida Atlantic University with Jupiter Community High School to incorporate a Geographic Information System (GIS) to teach environmental and earth science education in the high school. They found that GIS promotes "fresh thinking" and functions as an environmental paradigm tool. Case studies such as Hurricane Andrew and the Chernobyl nuclear accident were used. Included in the paper are the teacher training component, the GIS project curriculum, the technology requirements, and tips on implementing the curriculum.
