Description:

Allwyn Hall is a program in basic conflict resolution for teenagers and college students. Students arriving at college encounter social as well as educational challenges: living with roommates, getting into and out of new friendships and love relationships, working cooperatively with different kinds of people. The interpersonal problems such situations give rise to may be no fun at all-but that doesn't mean learning to manage them can't be fun. Applied Ethics lecturer Martha Harty has created Allwyn Hall, a CD-ROM tool that helps students learn and practice basic skills of conflict management.

The use of conflict resolution is growing in schools, businesses, government, divorce courts and communities. Tailoring these skills for a teenage and college audience, Allwyn Hall teaches a 3-stage problem solving process that students practice in the role of a virtual R.A. in a college residence hall. Users can work through three typical student disputes while airing all parties' views, clarifying the problems, and running brainstorming sessions. Harty has extensive experience mediating and training for the Pittsburgh Mediation Center and Carnegie Mellon. Her work developing Allwyn Hall was funded by the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for Improvement of PostSecondary Education..
