Description:
The School Time Phonics Program is a comprehensive, four-disk, CD-ROM
curriculum that provides an interactive, multisensory learning environment
for mastering the basic letter-sound associations in the English language.
To use the program students only need to know the letters of the alphabet.
They do not have to know how to read beyond a first or second grade level,
nor do they need to know much about computers. Once students sign in, they
operate the program and complete their lessons unassisted.
Words used in the program are pronounced, defined, and used in context.
Sentences, couplets, and brief poems when they occur are read and repeated
to students. In addition, information and concepts that are easier to grasp
are taught first. Those that might be more difficult or less familiar are
taught later. This "building blocks" approach to learning is followed
within a lesson and throughout the curriculum.
Features:
- The program works with students at all levels: mainstream students,
state and federally funded special needs and Title 1/Chapter 1 (remedial)
students, and young adults.
- The program is especially effective with students in grades 3 and above,
including adults, who require added, individualized attention to learn
basic reading and standard English language skills.
- The program contains diagnostic/prescriptive tests and twenty-six skills-building
lessons covering all consonant and vowel sounds.
- Teacher-directed lessons teach each phonetic sound, guide student responses,
and give immediate feedback.
- Lessons may be assigned in any order or in any number to suit the individual
needs of each student.
- The program's management system tracks each student's response, prints
out Student Reports, provides automatic branching, and allows students
to leave a lesson and return to their exit point at any time.
- Each lesson is a self-contained unit of study, follows a planned learning
strategy, and takes approximately 15-20 minutes to complete.
- Each lesson provides programmed reinforced learning so that students
get several opportunities to master the skills being taught.
- Each lesson is followed by a group of optional Fun Activities (games)
that offers additional opportunities to learn the basic concepts taught
in the phonics program. These Fun Activities are also available on a separate
CD ROM.
- Several teaching/learning modes are used so that student interest is
maintained.
