Dr. Bene Madunagu is a biologist and the head of botany at the University of Calabar in Nigeria. Among her many accomplishments, she founded Girls' Power Initiative, Nigeria. This remarkable non-governmental organization works to promote self-esteem among young women and adolescent girls. When we at the International Women's Health Coalition heard about Dr. Madunagu's innovative idea for a program back in 1994, we jumped at the chance to help bring it to life!

Last October, Dr. Madunagu came to New York to speak to the staff and board at IWHC and visit students at Marymount Middle School and Trinity and Nightingale-Bamford High Schools, telling all the news of the successes of Girls' Power Initiative, a program that is growing by leaps and bounds.
