Practical and Ethical Dilemmas in the Clinical Testing of Microbicides: A Report on a Symposium (1998). Lori L. Heise, C. Elizabeth McGrory, and Susan Y. Wood (New York: Center for Health and Gender Equity, International Women's Health Coalition, and The Population Council).
This publication reports on a symposium sponsored by Women's Health Advocates on Microbicides (WHAM) and The Population Council that brought together 55 scientists, advocates, and ethicists from 15 countries to explore how best to design and implement large-scale trials to evaluate the efficacy of new and existing - and women-controlled - substances capable of reducing the transmission of sexually transmitted infections. Microbicide research and development presents significant challenges to scientists and ethicists about how to achieve scientifically rigorous results in an ethically sound manner. The goals of the symposium were to understand women's needs and perspectives, address the practical issues that investigators will face in the field, and to make recommendations for the clinical testing of new microbicidal products. This report is the culmination of that process. Available free-of-charge from IWHC. 68 pages.
