Actions And Resources

Muslim Women Implement Beijing: The Sisterhood is Global Institute (SGI) published Claiming Our Rights: A Manual for Women's Human Rights Education in Muslim Societies in an attempt to develop culturally relevant materials to implement the Beijing and Cairo agreements. The manual features learning exercises that provide a framework for dialogue during 10 to 12 weekly workshop sessions. It is available in Bengali, Arabic, Persian, Uzbek and Malay, and provides a list of human rights organizations in North Africa, the Middle East and Asia.

SGI also organized a global conference of Muslim women called "Beijing and Beyond: Implementing the Platform for Action in Muslim Societies" at George Washington University in May, 1996. The conference addressed the diversity and complexity of Muslim women's lives around the world, and the ways that Western stereotyping of Islamic women, and a resurgence of fundamentalism, hinders women's participation in public life.
