Dyke Marsh Wildlife Area With Alexandria's Masonic Temple at your back, glide into the quiet hidden channels of Dyke Marsh, a freshwater wetlands just downriver from Alexandria. Georgetown: Bridges from Below Explore Georgetown's vibrant waterfront in a stable, tandem kayak--paddle under the beautiful Key and Memorial bridges, around forested Roosevelt Island and back along Georgetown's loveliest side. Our tour of Georgetown history and architecture was designed in partnership with the Octagon Museum. Sunset Tours (2 ½ hours, Thursdays through Sundays and Holidays) $39; Moonlight Tours (3 hours) $49 Piscataway Creek We'll go on one of two routes, depending on river conditions. One route takes us out to the mouth of Piscataway Creek, former tribal grounds of the Piscataway Indian Nation. Paddle under the looming ramparts of Fort Washington for views across the wide Potomac to George Washington's Mount Vernon estate. The other route takes you upstream towards the headwaters, meandering through marsh plants into a narrow creek overhung by trees. Groups may wish to reserve the upper deck of the Kingfisher for picnics or barbecues following a tour. Full catering is available, or bring your own.

Pohick Bay Paddle into the Mason Neck wildlife area, and you'll soon feel like you're the one being protected. Pohick Bay is a remarkable sanctuary from the outside world, a treasure of cloistered woods and wetlands. Poke around quiet coves and freshwater tidal marshes teeming with great blue heron, osprey and eagles.
