POTOMAC RIVER From urban waterfront to wilderness backwater, this backbone of the Chesapeake's southern drainage provides some of the East's best paddling. We offer five different one-day sea kayaking tours, each a different Potomac experience. All trips are also available upon special request.
Jones Point Lighthouse to Fort Foote Discover Jones Point Lighthouse and its ties to Alexandria, one of our nation's earliest and at one time, largest seaports. Paddle across the river to the ruins of Fort Foote, where we will "re-enact" the picnic enjoyed by President Lincoln and Secretary Staunton. We will return through the living wetlands of Dyke Marsh. Previous paddling experience required. $80 Alexandria to Piscataway Creek - one way Paddle from Alexandria to Fort Washington, slipping into some surprising creeks and coves, including Broad and Swan Creeks. Work up an appetite for dinner on the deck of the Kingfisher, and savor the sunset along with the gourmet picnic fare. Return to Alexandria by shuttle. Previous paddling experience recommended. $99.
Mason Neck Wildlife Areas Watch ospreys tend their nests and blue heron patiently await their next meal at one of their favorite haunts on the East Coast, Mason Neck State Park and National Wildlife Refuge. We'll explore both -- Kane's Creek, a meandering freshwater tidal marsh, and the beaches and cliffs near Sandy Point. We'll have plenty of time for a picnic and leisurely beach combing. This is one of the bests trips for viewing bald eagles. $85.
Mallows Bay Shipwrecks Paddle through the largest ship graveyard in North America. Glide over a century of hulking wrecks that have settled to the bottom of a shallow bay, waters perfect for exploration by kayak. Look up from this overlooked piece of Potomac maritime history and you'll see lots of wildlife, including bald eagles. Previous paddling experience required. $80
