All classes include kayaks and accessories. Most day classes are at our Piscataway Creek location; evening classes will be held at either Alexandria or Piscataway. Our instructors are patient and mature and are certified in coastal kayaking by the American Canoe Association and/or the British Canoe Union. Kayak Safety Learn about factors particularly important to sea kayakers: tides and currents, wind and waves, boat traffic, hypothermia, and more. Free to folks who purchase boats from us. Two hours. $20 Beginning Sea Kayaking Intensive, all-day class encompassing Introduction to Sea Kayaking, the Rescue Clinic, and an introduction to kayak safety. $99. 9 am-4:30 pm. Introduction to Sea Kayaking Learn the basics of boat control, using forward, reverse, sweep and draw strokes. Optional lesson in wet exit. Three hours. $55.
Rescue Clinic When you capsize, it is essential that you be able to re-enter your kayak quickly and safely. Learn and practice self and assisted rescues, indispensable skills for safe sea kayaking. Three hours. $55.
Fundamentals of Sea Kayaking This two-day skills workshop is the standard America Canoe Association course, covering kayak strokes, maneuvers, rescues, safety information, securing kayaks on vehicles, and more. This is a more in-depth version of our popular Beginning Sea Kayaking Class and provides greater opportunity for practicing sea kayaking skills and processing the "boat load" of information provided to you during the course. This course is also helpful for those wishing to become ACA instructors. Two days. $195.
Advanced Skills Workshop A more advanced class for paddlers with some experience. Learn to edge, brace, scull, combine strokes, practice rescues and towing. Previous kayaking experience required; course geared to participants. Three hours. $55 Rolling Learn the best rescue of them all -- the Eskimo roll. Once you know the Eskimo roll, your bracing skills will improve significantly . January 9 through March 26, 7:30 to 9:15 am and 9:15 to 10:45 am. $49. Instructor: Student ratio of 1:3.
Navigation Workshop This hands-on workshop focuses on the tools and skills kayakers use to plan safe trips. Learn how to read nautical charts, how to figure out tides and currents and how they may affect your route, and how to use a compass.
