House was built in 1819. Shop is named for John Steele, a founder of Hartford and first clerk of the Connecticut Colony. He was among three who explored the Litchfield area in 1657, signed a trade treaty with the Indians. Shop owned by Steele descendants, who specialize in works on county history.
