In Country Women Locator Service

Divider

Thank you for visiting the Women in Vietnam Home Page. Please enter your thoughts on the website or info on the person you are trying to locate below.

It may not look impressive, but my this little service has reunited dozens of people from around the world.  The message not only stays online where it can be located by search engines (people often search for their names) but I send it out in my newsletter which reaches over 500 women.

Be sure to include who, where, and when information. The more complete your description -- the better luck you will have.

As a High School student back in 1970-72 I wrote to a nurse serving in Vietnam.I lived in Churchville,Pa,outside of Philadelphia. Her name was Norma Griffiths.I would love to hear from her if she rememebers me.I wanted to be a nurse and now I have 28 years of nursing behind me.I just returned from DC and saw the nurses memorial which to me was breath taking. It brought back so many memories of the time.

I returned to Vietnam Jan.'68 to '69 and entertained throughout Vietnam with a trio called, "The Moustache & Us. We were based in DaNang. We only had a few photos of our group and no tapes. If anyone out there saw our show and has photos or tapes, we'd greatly appreciate you contacting us. And to all those men and women that we met during that time, we thank you for your friendship and kindness and we will always remember you.

Realizing this is the 10th anniversay of the WOmens Memorial, I am in need of some speakers for Veterans Day at the First Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Angel Fire New Mexico. We lost our founder Dr. Westphall on July 22nd of this year and are more or less on our own for this celbration. We wanted to go with Native American Women Vets as November is also Native American Month. It is just in my opinion about time this Memorial honored women as it was built in memory of Dr. Westphalls son I feel it mainly honors men.

My name is Glen Roger Quaintance. I served in Vietnam from October 1970 to February 1972. In 1971, I got Malaria and a nurse by the name of "Sharon Lane." (Not the famous Sharon A. Lane who died in 1969), but a different Shane Lane nursed me back to health. I almost died. Sharon Lane is a common name. And of course, she may have a different name now due to marriage. She mentioned she was from Ohio-in some town close to Cincinnati, but I don't remember the name. I was in Pleiku hospital around end of July, first part of August 1971 when I had malaria. I was in the 18th Brigade, 509 Engineers, 71st Evac Hospital in Pleiku. Anyone have any information here would be most appreciated. Thank God for all the nurses in Vietnam!

I recently watched the latest 60 Minutes II updating the "Women in Viet Nam" story...and wanted to comment.

I think this is as good a place as any.

I was very moved watching Diane Evans and the other women's stories. What incredible women! I cannot imagine the horror of a war time operating room in a war like Viet Nam...

I felt so proud of how strong they were and how important their story is to all of us.

Thnaks,

Hello, I flew scouts in vietnam in 1971 out of Quang Tri. I was shot down on the DMZ and transported to the 18th Surgical hospital. I cannot find any reuinoions, sights or anything for that unit. I spent a week at that hospital and then they sent me to camp Zama in Japan. It's been 32 years and I would just like to thank all of you who did a remarkable job to save us vets. If you know of any reunions for that unit, please let me know, Ken Johnson Charliehorse-scouts "D" troop 3/5 cav 9th inf div Quang Tri, Vietnam

I was part of the Advance Party that left Ft Polk for Tuy Hoa. From Saigon to NaTrang then to nothing in Tuy Hoa on the South China sea. Villages of Phu Hiep near us. Lt Col John G. Meier, Major Ramond E. Smith, 1st Sgt Bobby Wilkerson were also part of that advance party. About 2 weeks later the unit arrived and constructon began. Living was primitive for a long time. I'd sure like to find Gerald Gaddis from Oklahoma, Larry Lynch from New York, Guy Sands from Chicago, Tom Richlock from Wisconsin or any others who were part of the first deployment. Didn't even know the unit moved to Chu Lai. What happened to the original 91st Evac in Tuy Hoa?

I was First Sgt of Det 2, 57th Air Evac at Cam Rahn 9/68 to 9/69. Still have fond memories of the C-141 nurses and med techs. They were true professionals... moving broken young men out of the country. I have pictures of hosp nurses who helped us with "sickcall" at the Montagnard village. That was a long time ago in another life, but the memories come back quickly while reading this web site. God bless you all.

Just a message to all veterans, thanks for serving your country. I am a two tour Vietnam vet, thanks to all my friend's who served at the 27th Surg ChuLai and the 67th Evac in QhinNhon. While watching some of the Iraq war they had some film on one of the hospital over there,we called some our unit's Mash hospital, they had the same mobile unit but I can't think of the name they used. The unit was the 44th Med Battalion which was my unit in Vietnam 27th Surg. Even though that was 34 year's ago they still have the same unit's. The new's clip brought back alot of fond memories. Happy Memorial Day. Take care and be safe. Kim Middleton

The first Women’s Army Corps (WAC) person to serve in Vietnam was MAJOR ANNE MARIE DOERING (1962 to 1963).

I was named after my great cousin Lt. Col. Anne Marie Doering. If anyone remembers her please write. I am told she was in intelligence.

Anne Marie never talked much about her career. Except France running around with my Dad, the nice wines, and when she captured the New Guinea fellow. We knew also she got the Bronze Star with a V for Valor. And many other metals. She sometimes mentioned McArthur.

If anyone remembers her please write. Id love to hear more about "My Anne Marie". We were very close my whole life.

Example: My buddy was on duty south of Danang with USMC. He was three days in country and on his first night patrol when "all hell broke loose." "We were taking up our positions when I felt a burning sensation in my ass. I knew I was shot and ducked for cover. As I gathered my wits I realized we were surrounded by a troop of baboons and I had been bitten not shot." You get the picture. Any and all stories are welcome. Send to Theo_2Isaac @bendnet.com

The 95th Evacuation Hospital celebrated its 5th reunion at Myrtle Beach South Carolina May 2nd thru 4th, 2003.

Will we have another reunion, (YOU BET) the next reunion will be held in Las Vegas Nevada in May 2005, the exact date of the reunion will be announced in July 03.

The veterans of the 95th Evac were presented with a distinguished service award by the Military Order of the Purple Heart by the South Carolina Chapter.

The last time this award was present to another civillian entity was after September 11th, 2001 plane attack on the Pentagon and New York. This was a great honor to be recognized by such a distinguished organization.

All west coast 95th Evacuation Hospital Vets get ready, we will be on the West Coast in 2 years.

This is a great site and keep up the good work.

To Legallyblonde.

Right on blonde. I was in Vietnam for two years as a Rehab advisor in Qui Nhon and saw the total devastation that took place on both sides.

I was totally sympathetic to the soldiers there, not only American, but Australian, New Zealand, and Korea.

Viet Nam should have been allowed to deal with their own problems as in any other civil war.

Many of the soldiers mentioned were good friends to our team, and I have absolutely no beef with them, or the American and British, and other coalition forces in Iraq.

God speed their safe return.

I also believe most problems in the wporld today could be overcome with good will, tremendous diplomatic and humanitarian effort, and education.,rather than all-out war.

Have you seen a picture of all the beautiful young American men and women who died during the first Gulf War? God they were beautiful, our future Congressmen, Senators and possibly even President, slaughtered, and why -because George Bush Sr. thought that the Vietnam war was lost because America fought it with one hand tied behind it's back, and he wanted to excorcise the ghost of Vietnam. That's not my opinion. That is what George Bush said, but George Bush is wrong. America did not lose the Vietnam war because it fought it with one hand tied behind its back. America lost the Vietnam war because America made it absolutely clear to demagogues like Richard Nixon, that the cost of winning WAS NOT acceptable.

And what does the Gulf war have to do with the preposterous, dangerous perception that it is possible to "win" a war? War is not a game. War reflects common failure and common desperation.

I think that we need to reverse the absolutely insane contention that a massacre is a war, because if it is not, everybody will need big armies and weapans of mass destruction, to feel secure -just like North Korea. We need to create a world where the incentive to disarm exceeds the obsession to acquire weapons of mass destruction, and we need to do it, yesterday !

The CIA had told Bush that Hussein was not suicidal and that a blockade could have won the Gulf War without firing a single shot.

Take a look at ALL of the pictures of the Americans that died during the so called victorious Gulf War, they were not numbers or statistics, they were beautiful individuals who did not have to die, if George Bush Sr. was not so damned insecure:

http://www.legallyblonde.2ya.com

That's just my opinion of why the protestors should never stop !

This soldier has has PTSD and wants to bring closure for himself by locating this special nurse who gave him the will to live.

I was in Bien Hoa, Danang and AnKhe in 1969 -70. I think of my DD friends often with fond memories. Does anyone remember the name of the Montagnard hospital operated by Dr. Smith? She was an American physician and I wonder what happened to her and her fine work.

I'm a "former" MARINE who arrived at Da Nang AFB on the 6th of April, 1972. During the night of April 13th, I suffered multiple shrapnel wounds from a 122mm rocket and was Medi-vaced to the 95th Evac. Hospital at Marble Mountain. Two Army nurses took care of me while I recovered. I seem to recall that one was a Capt. and the other a Lt. and their last names were Smith and Jones which I remembered from the TV show at the time named "Alias Smith and Jones." I would really appreciate it if anyone who may know or remember them would contact me. I owe them a lot and would like to personally thank them.

WELCOME HOME!!! I served with 65th AESQ, AFRES (69-71) and 10th AEGp (71-72) for Operation Gold Run stationed out of Travis AFB but, more often than not was TDY to 55th (Elmendorf), 56th (Yokota) and 57th (Clark). I remember those days as if they were yesterday, although some of the more horrific parts have faded with time. The nurses I flew with were the best! The techs took good care of them and they, in turn, took good care of us on missions. As with any group we were family, for no matter what the crew make-up was, we all worked together to get it done. I could not begin to tell you what it felt like to work on the "freedom birds", C-141's, to bring them back to the world even though most were coming out of LBJ at the time and had other problems as well. Flew C-9A's and C-124's as well. To all of us on the med crew they were just more grunts going home to THE WORLD and we made it as comfortable as possible. If there are any of you out there, either nurses or techs, I would really appreciate hearing from any and/or all of you.

trying to locate a nurse from Chu Lai. I am a Grunt who is making a request that I am sure many of us have already made. I think she was at the Evac Hospital in 1970. She was a Cap. and her first name was Karen.Last name is remembered as Foxx or Wolf or I do not remember. But I do remember her as Karen. Short, brunette, and of course she is still remembered as the most "beautiful woman that has ever walked the earth." I know you have heard this before as well, but if it wasn't for her....... Well it has been a good life. A full one. One that I would not of had if not for her. I want to locate her and just say thank you and let her know I made it. You see when I last saw her in Chu Lai, she kissed my cheek and I felt a tear from her eyes as they were taking me to the plane for eventual Evac to Japan. After that baptisim I knew that I would make it and that nothing ever again could hurt me in life. I would never go through anything as hard as what I had just gone through. But I was not made immortal, I have developed a bad heart. Nothing serious to the point of being threatening.I had the by-pass and I realized what time it was in my life. I have been negligent in matter too long. So please, If anyone can direct me to her some how or at least open a possible trail please contact me,And once again from a Grunt.Thank you ladies. Marcus Nevacoff

Love your site, come back to it now and then to see what is new. Recently read the piece on China Beach. I wondered if it really really mattered that the show was not "real". It was television, after all. [But then I am not an In country vet.] But, recently I was at a service related conference for assorted reserve types and a group of us old goats, the 50 somethings, when out to lunch and started talking about Vietnam, a generationally dangerous topic. One of our fellows had informed us that he never saw or knew anyone who used drugs in Vietnam. When the laughter finally stopped one of the guys commented "I didn't know they had an MOS for altar boy." Humorous, but part of the unending desire of vets to have their version of the story told. Women aren't that different. Love the space you give to women, all women who served and risked and sometimes died. Thank you

For those of you who served or passed thru the 18th Surgical Hospital at Quang Tri, I bear the bad news that I, as part of a MACV Advisory Team, had to destroy the beautiful hospital on April 1, 1972 (Easter Sunday). We were completly surrounded by 20,000 NVA and got lifted out that morning by helicoptors. We were only a small team of 15 Advisors to the ARVN 3rd Division. My senior advisor, Col. Metcalf and I personally selected the compound for our headquarters/living area because of the helo-pad and of course the wonderful generators that provided electricity and running water.

When we got there in Dec. 1971, every building in the area was totally deserted. Totally intact, but no Americans within 100 miles, except a hand full of us American Advisors. All hell broke lose on March 30, 1972, when the NVA surprised us, and the World, by coming across the DMZ only 2-3 miles away. We held out for 2 days, and got orders to escape and evade to the coast...but thank God the choppers came at the last minute and saved us.

For the few months we were there, we enjoyed everything you left behind. We surrounded the small compound with wire/bunkers/watch towers, etc...and sweated blood everything night waiting for an attack. When we found out the choppers were coming to take us out, Col. Metcalf gave the order to destroy everything we could. We had been under constant artillery fire for two days and took several hits, so there was not much to destroy. We mainly use thermite gernades to burn everything down. We put sand in the tanks of the generators and turned them on high and ran like hell.

I remember using my M16 to shoot up the Officer/EM combined Club....bottles were flying every where. The mess hall had taken a direct hit and food was every where.I just remember the syrup...it was everywhere and we where cleaning our boots off when the choppers came in. What a heck of way to leave your beautiful hospital.

We lost two advisors, one came in by chopper from Camp Evans. We placed him in the operating room...but we did not have any medics and he died from his wounds. Two weeks later, I went with a small team and walk thru the compound to check things out and look for any bodies of Americans. The entire place had been sacked by the NVA Army looking for loot. To make sure they got nothing of value, our higher headquarters had a B52 bombing raid over the entire base a week later.

I got to see some of the aerial photos of the raid....bad news, but there in the middle of the mess was the helo-pad with the big red cross.....saying "We came, We Served." It is now December 10, 2002....and I thank all of you that served at Quang Tri..... God speed!

Enjoyed your site - read entries from May to present. I noticed none mentioned flight attendants. I was a flight attendant for World Airways 1967 to 1969, we didn't serve in country but we did a lot of landings and take-off from Vietnam.

I have belonged to a Vietnam Veterans Group (Called Freedom Birds) here in Id.Falls since 1984, I am a past President of the group. Even though this group was made up of all ex- military men, they asked me to join because of my affliation with Vietnam and the soldiers.

We just published a 300+ page book honoring the Idaho's 45,000 Vietnam Veterans who served and the state 251 causalities.

We have been told by our U.S. State Sentor that our book is the nation's first comprehensive, statewide account of the veterans'stories from Vietnam. I worked on this book since 1990 and am honored to have been able to pay tribute to these brave men. Name of this book is "Reasons to Remember".

Would love to hear from other flight attendants who flew in and out of Vietnam. Keep up the good work in recognizing the Women Civilian Vietnam Veterans.

Just found this site. Beautiful. I was a Navy E-5 stationed in the Delta '71-'72. In 2001 I was in DC as part of Run For The Wall. We were at a dinner at the DC Rambler's clubhouse and a lady was sitting across from me wearing an old 'Nam fatigue blouse. I asked her if she had been in country. Somewhat reluctantly she replied that she had been a nurse with 3rd Surg. Of course I immediatly said "Welcome home sister." . Tears began to stream down her face and she said that no one had ever said that to her before. It broke my heart. Welcome home Sisters. Mike

Wishing all Veterans a late but sincere great veterans day. Each day is Veterans Day in my opinion. Appreciate what all veterans have done for our county through out its history. Wishing all my former Military friends of the 95th Evac and the 22nd Surgical Hospital a happy Holiday Season in 2002. You men and women were special in your dedication to preserving life. Eager to see all the 95th Evac Vets at the reunion in May 03. Back to the beach, not China Beach, but Myrtle Beach S.C. Terry Caskey

To all the Women who served in Vietnam, thank you for helping our men. To those that have had problems with Agent Orange, I hope the government does something soon for all of you. It makes me angry to see military people treated in suchg a disgusting way by our government. You all deserve medals for your work in country..Thank you and Welcome Home.

A facinating website. My hat is off to you who served in combat medicine in Vietnam. I had a life threatening pnumonia when I was a private in the Army in FEB 1983 in West Germany and have fond memories of the doctors, nurses and the respiratory therapists that cared for me when I was down. It really did feel like they were angels and I`m sure the people you all helped in Vietnam feel the same way. I`d like to Thank you on this Veterans Day 2002. Mike Rogers HHB 1/18FA 1982-83

I was the 1000th patient admited to the Tuy Hoa Hospitol in May 19n May 1968. I remember the little Vietnamese Girl you treated her for a badley infected foot. She later died from the infection. Perhaps you remember the RED HORSE Squadron. I wass the Squadron Commander. We built many buildings and aircraft protection buildings. We also built the chapel and airconditioned it more than called for. I appreciaate the support you all gave my troops during your assignment to the Hospitol. We had a Doctor assiged to our unit and he spent most of his time working in the Hospitol

thanks to the nurses of 12th evac hospital. I was an infantry medic w/the Wolfhounds when I was wounded in an ambush. I was 19 and scared as hell. I had lost a lot of blood by the time I arrived at cu chi. It was a nurse who talked to me who searched and found the wounded who I had treated in the ambush and who reassured me every one had got out. I dont remember her name but I'll never forget her face or the sound of her voice. I hope god has been as kind to her as she was to me. SEEKING ENTERTAINERS FROM THE VIETNAM WAR... I am writing a book and play about my experiences as a seventeen year-old Jewish/Australian Flamenco and Jazz dancer in the Vietnam war, and the effects those experiences have had on my life. I toured all over South Vietnam from March to June, 1970. There are photos of me (my old publicity shots that got me the tour) on my web site http://www.chariot.net.au/~aviva

I seek contact with any ex-service personnel, entertainers, journalists or others from that period in Vietnam who remember having seen me on stage or in person. This is for my own healing as well as for the book and my play, "This is a War Zone, Baby -- Improvise!".

I am a member of the Vietnam Veterans’ Association of Australia, South Australian Branch Inc. and the Returned and Services League (RSL). Since coming out of the woodwork in October 1995, I have had some very moving encounters with Australian ex-servicemen. Some have told me that it was having contact with entertainers in Vietnam that raised their spirits and in some cases, kept them from committing suicide. Many Americans I've met on the net and in person have expressed the same feelings.

I am one of the numerous entertainers who experienced Vietnam and the war very differently from what is portrayed in the media. This book is an as yet untold account of part of the war. Some people I met in Vietnam have had a significantly positive influence over various aspects of my life.

As I don’t have any photographs of my time in ‘Nam (I burned the few I did have in the erroneous belief that my memories would vanish with the photos), I am also seeking copies of photos of me that anybody may have. It’s a long time ago, but there were thousands of photos taken of me there – some must have survived.

My name is now Aviva Sheb’a. On my passport (and on my in-country ID), my name was Vivienne Miriam Marsh. My stage name was Aviva, which is actually the name I was given at birth. Date of Birth: 21 May, 1952. I was with the group, The Sydney-Siders. I also did some shows with the group, The King’s Cross Capers. These troupes were both Australian, but we were employed by the agency, The Douglas Wolf Organisation, to entertain at the US military bases. We also performed for the Australians. We were not with the USO shows or those organised by the Australian Forces Overseas Fund (AFOF). I went to Thailand with the King’s Cross Capers on June 7, touring the US bases. I'd REALLY love to find a woman by the name of Dianne. Alas, I have no idea what her surname was, but she was also a dancer with the same groups. Other members of the Sydney-Siders -- Bruce Furney, (guitar, trumpet, vocals) Ralph Graham (guitar, vocals) Denise Cooper (singer) and I all met up in Sydney on Australian Vietnam Veterans' Day, August 18 this year! We all want to know how/where Dianne is -- WE LOVE YOU, DEE! What a blast that was!

Helen Nolan, who spent two years in Vietnam during the war (and who introduced me to this site), organised for us to lay a wreath at the Sydney Cenotaph for the Non-Combatants who died in VN, or who have died since due to their service there.

Others in the Sydney-Siders were Grahame Furney (he's living in London) and Jim Crowley. Very sadly, Jim passed away on St. Patrick's Day this year. Other members of the King's Cross Capers: Ron Blaskett, (ventriloquist -- his dolls were Gerry Gee and Adolphus Twirk), Ron McMurray (guitar, vocals), Paul Trevi (vocalist), George Gauci (drums), Sam D'Angelo (bass).

Some of my letters home to my parents actually arrived(!) and my mother kept them. Therefore I have some details of places I visited in Vietnam and approximate dates. At some bases, we did several shows.

Arrived in Vietnam March 12, 1970.
26-31 March: Vinh Long, Can Tho, returned to Saigon.
2 April: Da Nang. We were based there for several weeks.
5,6 May: Dong Ha
12 May: Qui Nhon
13 May: Phu Bai (or Phu Tai?) collapsed after one of the shows, was driven some kilometres away for treatment at a base infirmary. This may have been Can Tho, but I don’t have exact details. I was treated for diarrhoea, vomiting, dehydration.
14 May: L.Z. English and Phu Cat (could have been Phuket, not sure of spelling)
15 May L.Z. English and North English
16-18 May: Bong Son, Cam Ranh Bay
18 May: returned to Da Nang
30 May: Saigon
31 May: Vung Tau

We also did several shows at Pleiku, around Quong Tri, Phuoc Tui province, Nui Dat and other areas, although I do not have details of these.

Some letters I wrote to my parents were posted by service personnel with their addresses:

Lt. J.L FORGER 0349-48-0012
HHC, 3 BN/503 INF.
173rd ABN NDE
A.P.O. SAN FRANCISCO 96250

CPL R.F. KELLER - 2377776
1st M.T. BN. HQS PO
1st MAR DIV
KPO SAN FRANCISCO 96602

Other people mentioned by name in my letters are: Staff Sargeant Earl (Freddie) Walker, Bob Golling, whose birthday was also on May 21st. He was from Cleveland, Ohio. (Believe it or not, he actually knew my uncle in Cleveland.) Other names I remember are Staff Sgt. Farmer (from Pleiku), Raoul Rodriguez, a Medic/Captain, if I remember rightly in Saigon.

There are many people I remember, but not their names. I often wonder what happened to them. Some I would like to include in my book, with permission and by name, if possible.

I appreciate any assistance.

My heartfelt thanks to everyone in Vietnam and whom I've met since, who saved my sanity in any way – even if it I didn’t realise it at the time!

Love and peace to you all,

Aviva Sheb’a

The website and guestbook are moving documentaries. I was at Cam Ranh Bay, Sept. '70 to Sept. '71 with the 14th Aerial Port. Lived on Herky Hill the other side of main base. We had a Red Cross Center and God Bless the Donut Dollies that ran it. My life on base paled compared to those in the field. I do recall the constant Cobra gunships firing all nite long. The ammo dump blowing up at 3:30 am. The Navy instalation taking small arms fire from Mika Village[Buddhist Temple]. And a Lieutenant just before leaving for the states taken by a sapper bomb. Over time I am not as proud at how I acted after learning more about others who saw the real action. Reading the guestbook testimonies tells me I was part of something I didn't have a full picture of. I can see now that the Red Cross women and the field hospitals, field nurses and medics/corpmen were very special entities as well as the soldiers. I'll visit here and read more as time permits. As I do a website I will link to this site as well.

I, like the other veterans listed here, want to thank all of the women who served in Vietnam (in any capacity). As an infantryman with the 1/27 "Wolfhounds", 25th Div ('68-'69), I can't begin to express my gratitude for your service. We had to be there...you didn't! I'm sure all of you have been told many times how much you meant to us...but I would be remiss if I didn't share my sentiments with you. Simply stated, all of you were revered by every GI...almost to the status of a saint. You were life, hope and most importantly, an American woman!!! I have pictures of some of the 25th Div. Donut Dollies. One was taken Christmas day, 1968 at FSB Mahone I. There was one DD from Minnesota who I was in love with. I believe her name was Judy Hutmantle (phonics)? She was always extremely kind, generous and patient. If anyone knows her whereabouts, please feel free to give her this message. Again, thank you for all that you did, and I only hope that any pain that you carried home with you is abating slowly but surely. Sincerely, SP4 Mark Cheresh (800)266.2077x26

Welcome home and thanks for serving. I am writing a book about Vietnam and would like to interview a nurse, specifically, and any others who want their story told. The book is a collection of no-nonsense, blunt, honest interviews about your experience and what you would like young Americans today to know about the Vietnam War. Personal interviews preferred (in or near Atlanta), phone/letters/email OK. Thanks in advance for your time, and thanks for taking care of the troops.

Dear Vietnam Veteran, I know I should have written much sooner. I can't say why I did not. Out of fear of admitting to myself, you were there, fighting a war. Or maybe ashamed. Ashamed that I never accepted the things you felt you had to do. Whatever it is, I know how it must hurt. Believe me when I say it hurts me more. I have the burden of your hurt plus that of my own. The pain of not being able to show my true feeling towards you. I am not writing this for the months you served in Vietnam, but for the many years, you were left alone with only your brother Veterans. You served proudly and it went unmentioned. For a long time, I've wanted to express the words. The words an honorable Veteran needs to hear. For a long time, I've wanted to hold you during your times of pain. God knows I wanted to. And only He knows why I never found the courage. I do not remember what I use to say; maybe I do not want to remember. All I know is I hope that it is not too late to give you those things now. For years you tried to be part of my world. Doing everything to please me, just to be noticed and given a little time and understanding... I look back and see the demands I placed on your shoulders when you were young. "Fight your weakness, and always show strength to others around you." Who was I to make such a demand? I sit here with tears in my heart; finally admitting to myself the one weakness you must have seen in me and never questioned. My inability to say the words that I know would have meant so much to you. "Welcome Home." You served your country honorably. Please hear these words now, from my heart. Please give me a chance to be part of your world now. The world I should have been part of long ago. Love, America http://home.earthlink.net/~dearvietnamveteran/

I was a LRRP with 3rd Battalion, 506th Infantry, 101st Airborne at Phan Thiet in 1969. During a mission between April and July of 1969, I received a snake bite and was medivaced to the Aid Station at Phan Thiet. I was then medivaced to a hospital near Bein Hoa but don't remember the name of the unit. I was in the hospital for eleven days then transfered back to my unit. I would like to contact and thank the nurses or doctor (He was a visiting Air Force doctor)in Phan Thiet for saving my life and also contact and thank the nurses at the hospital. I especially want to thank the female lieutenant who first chewed me out for walking with my IV down and draining my blood back into the bottle but later that evening bringing my first good meal which was a complete pizza. Again thank you for everything. By the way, I was snake bitten again on my first mission back to the field. Mike Fujinaga

Hi, I served in the American Red Cross SRAO (donut dollie) program in Vietnam from 1969-1970. I served at An Khe from March-July 1969 where the 173rd and then the 4th division was stationed. We visited Camp English weekly. I was stationed at Cam Ranh Air Base from July 1969-January 1970 and then Chu Lai (Americal) from Jan-March 1970. I recently attended an American Red Cross Overseas Organization reunion in CO Springs with many ex VN donut dollies. I would like to hear from other donut dollies as we are planning another get together next summer in Philadelphia. If there is anyone out there who remembers me, I would love to hear from you.

Excellent Site! I was a high school student during Vietnam, wrote 3 soldiers over there, and wore a POW bracelet until he was listed in the paper as returned home. I avoided the news reports on tv about the war. I was quite apathetic, though I got disgusted by the protesters who badmouthed the guys over there as if they started the war, wanted the war, or wanted the war to continue. I didn't want war, but believed the guys who had to be there needed support, not blame. I wanted to just be a kid, felt I was a coward because I used to thank God that I was a girl and couldn't get drafted. My brother missed the draft by just a few months when the war ended soon after he turned 18. I am in awe of the young girls and women who weren't apathetic like I was; content to stay "safe" at home in the states. Thank you for this site.

The comments in your guestbook are funny, sad, intimate and timely. I was interested in the guestbook for many reasons. My stepfather, brother and husband served in Vietnam at the same time around 1968 to 1970. I joined the National Health Service Corp in 1972 as a new nurse graduate and served in rural America as a pediatric nurse practitioner for close to 3 years. My mother pleaded with me not to go to Vietnam so I decided to serve stateside. I joined the Army Nurse Corp in 1976 and remain in the Reserves today. I have served with many nurses that were in Vietnam while a member of the 6253th USAH, the 347th USAH, and the 352nd CHS. I have always found them to be the best nurses and officers. In fact my Amry recruiter was a nurse that served in Vietnam, Rose Sandecki. I am currently attached to the 351st Civil Affairs Command as the Medical Liaison Officer. We are looking for nurses in our command to assist keeping close to 2,000 soldiers "medically ready" to assist in missions around the globe. I know nurses will come through again! As an alumni of UC San Francisco School of Nursing, I hope to have a program next year on military nursing for our Nursing Alumni Day. If you would like to participate please contact me. It is very gratifying to be a nurse and hear about all the wonderful things that nurses did for our soldiers in Vietnam. Thank you. pattywernet@hotmail.com
