Grandfathers rocking on sagging front porches
spinning out glories of battles long ended
Horrors unmentioned and screaming forgotten
Eager belief spelled on tiny new faces
Babies who dream as they're tutored to dream
Male bonding rituals of ancient lineage.
Is this the way it is vectored through time,
this fervor to offer their anonymous blood
in the name of the powerful, the prophet, the mighty,
in the name of dark urges most dare not articulate?
Or is it perhaps a Y-linked pandemic
never isolated because researchers are male?
Grandmothers wonder in sweltering kitchens
as they prepare supper for one less than before.
