What will I do with you unruly boys
tracking in blood right through my dreams?
Where on earth did you learn your manners?
And when, by the way, will you EVER grow up?
March yourselves back here and clean up this mess!

The Poet's Commentary:
This is a poem I wrote for Mothers Day in 1991. It's a little cryptic for some of the
guys, but maybe some of you moms will get it. It's meant to be a distorted echo of a
mother's voice chiding her boys about such mundane mom concerns as kids tracking mud
across a freshly mopped kitchen floor, using phrases and rhythms that moms everywhere use
when nagging kids. Unfortunately, we who have experienced war know too well that dead boys
never grow up.
