First i would like to thank you for contributing such a beatiful peace of writing into this world. I believe that all artist deserve some recognition for their work. Second i wouldlike to say that your piece of writing was an excellent example of the strugle that women had in the war. how they had to hold there emotions and stay professional no matter what. i really enjoyed hearing such a different out look on the war. through a womens eyes. its not often heard. thatnk you for your time in reading my comments. -bailey whitaker

Hi, My name is Kathy Pumphrey and I work at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida. Each year we celebrate and honor our country's veterans with a huge Veterans' Day program. This year's Veterans' Day program will honor those who served in the Vietnam War. To prepare our PK - 12th grade students for the program, we get curriculum or special posters, informational brochures, etc. from agencies around the country. Since this year's program is based upon the Vietnam War, we are hoping that you might have some materials which we can use in our classrooms to prepare the students for our program in November.

If you have anything that we might be able to use, please mail them to my attention at:

Lake Highland Prep School
901 N. Highland Avenue
Orlando, FL. 32803
Attn: Kathy Pumphrey
L.S. Guidance Secretary

We thank you in advance for any items you can send us.

PS: If you happen to be in the Orlando area on Nov. 11th, please come to our school and see how we honor our veterans!

Nice site!
Read this great book everyone, "Women in Vietnam" by Ron Steinman. It has Emily's story in it.

Make sure that your local high school and library has a copy of this book.

Like the Wall, we must not let the sacrifices of those men and women who served in Vietnam go unnoticed.

For us today, in a world filled with terrorism, death is still be dished out to young military men and women.

When I see the faces of those killed in Iran on my television screen, I ask, "What have we learned as a human race."

Hello Emily: Firstly, my heartfelt thanks for the courageous, unselfish, and loving acts performed by all the women who served in Vietnam. I read your poetry with tears in my eyes.

I am a retired Canadian teacher living for just one year in Sydney, Australia. On my own, I visited the War Memorial back in the late 80s. The first statement I'll make is silly and born out of ignorance. I saw a name "Sharon" and I thought, that must have been an embarrassing name for a man to have. Moments later, I realized that women had served. Sharon was a woman.

Now, in Australia in 2003, I picked up a book "Women in Vietnam". I read your story and poetry about Kenny. It moved me. I also found references to Sharon. I found out her story. This was a sad moment for me.

Back to the Wall. I moved down the Wall looking at the names. I stopped feet away from a man and a woman. I was shocked to suddenly hear the man swearing...Fucking this, and that Fucking Bastard. I jumped to conclusions by assuming that he had no respect or was mentally disturbed. How wrong of me. There was suddenly sobbing sounds. I glanced to find the man sobbing in the arms of the woman. The swearing was the only way that he could express the love and loss that was in his mind and heart.

Twenty years have passed and I still remember both incidents.

I am very disgusted and mad, if things have not changed for the civilian women who served in Nam, i.e. not having medical converage and access to doctors who know about the effects of Agent Orange. I hope this changes. They should be buried with the flag on their coffin.

Thanks for your service in Nam. The book, Women in Vietnam, should be in every high school library..even compulsory reading on American History courses.

Your Canadian friend in Oz, Pauline Gallagher

Hi, Emily - I don't know enought about computers to figure out how to get into the donutdolly website to post a message. Penni just passed the word that Nancy Smoyers is organizing a reunion in DC this year, or at least some kind of get together - can you help get the word out to all the DD's that you have contact with, or through Patty's site? We're all getting older - I don't think we will have too many more chances to do this ...... let's ty for a really good one for the 10th Anniversary of "our" statue!

Hello Emily, Hope this finds you well. I really don't know where to begin. First, let me say welcome home. I was in Vietnam in 70, 10 Jan to 4 Dec, I was with B-Btry 2/20 ARA, Blue Max, 1st Cav Div (Airmobile) spent most of my time at a place called Camp Gorvad, Phouc Vinh, I also spent some time at LZ Buttons, Song Bai. I was in the 93D Evac Hosp down at Long Binh from 11 Aug 70 to 6 Sep 70 recovering from burns I received from a gasaline explosion at Gorvad. I turned 21 on 27 Aug 70 and the Red Cross Donut Dollies baked me cake and we had a really nice B-day party on the ward I was in. I have never forgotten the kindness those beautiful young roundeyed sweethearts showed to me on that day. I do not remember their names, but i sure love to find out who they were and be able to contact them and thank them and tell them how much i appreciated their kindness. In closing i would like to say thank you to each and every girl/women that served in Vietnam as donut dollies and risked their lives on a daily basis to give us all a ray of hope, a warm smile, and a word of encouragement. I love you and all the Donut Dollies very much, always have and always will. May God bless all. Bye for now, Take care, Love Max W. Hosafros , Jenera, Oh Hosafrom@tacom.army.mil

I recently started an online writing zine entitled Beyond The Pale-a zine dedicated to exposing the heart and soul of individuals who've seen life with honest eyes. Gary Goude and Bill Shields, to name a couple, were in the first issue, and there are more to come. We have a wide range of writers consisiting of angst-ridden youth, wise vietnam vets, enlightened taoists, and more. It's a potpouri of power and we're a motley crowd of keyboard slammers. Wanted to know if you're intersted in reading/writing for it? All authors maintain the rights to their works. You just give me permission to send them out to an evergrowing audience. If you're interested in writing for or to at least receive a copy of Beyond The Pale, e-mail, and I'll contact you as soon as possible. Thanks.

I had read both some books by women nurses in Vietnam (Winnie Smith, American Daughter Gone to War; and Linda Van Deventer, ?Wait Until Morning) and some of poems by military people ("Winning Hearts and Minds", Michael Casey's "Obscenities"), and yours definitely add another important dimension. Dear Emily: No doubt we have met, perhaps many times. I served the U.S. Navy for 12 years. Six years in Vietnam. I was a boat coxswain when I was a crew member of the U.S.S. Whitfield County (LST 1169). We operated with the Mobile Riverine Forces out of Dong Tam. Every other day, while in Dong Tam, I had boat duty, I drove the LCVP "Papa Boat" From one ship to another and into Dong Tam. There was the Askari, the Benewah, and the Colleton and the "Apple" barracks ship. I just wanted to say that you Donut Dollies were much appreciated. You were so beautiful to see. A breath of fresh air. I have many memories myself, of those days. God Bless You! We really appreciated your being there for us. Love, John

Attention all former and current members of the 47th Infantry Regiment: If you served with the 47th Infantry Regiment in the USA, Germany, WWI, WWII or Vietnam, be advised that the Regiment is hosting a reunion in April 2003. The dates are April 10 thru 13, 2003. The Command Post will be the Holiday Inn-North in Columbus, Georgia. The 2nd Battalion and 3rd Battalion of the 47th are stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. The battalions are not a part of the 9th Infantry Division, but are basic training battalions in the Infantry Center's Basic Combat Training Brigade. Both battalions will be heavily involved in the scheduled activities. This is your chance to get reacquainted with old friends and share some good times. I strongly encourage former members to attend. Mark your calendar for 2003!! I urge you to sign the Guestbook and give us your email address. In that way, we can ensure you get an invitation with all the details. I look forward to seeing you there. Welcome Home! Send me an email message for more information.

I was impressed with the information on this sight i was never under the impression that women actually served in vietnam and the poetry is lovely. The insight into the female side of the war now gives me something to tell my dad, who believes he knows everythging about Vietnam. Thankyou.

What a moving site. I commend you and other donut dollies on your courage, compassion and dedication in making the lives of those who served in Viet Nam a bit more bearable. The "Moving Wall" is currently coming to Pittsburgh, PA, July 12-18 at Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall and Museum. I have been brought on board to handle all media/pr relations. I think that an interview with a "local or area" donut dollie would be a wonderful piece for either print or television in conjunction with the "Moving Wall" exhibit. Would you happen to know of anyone in the Pittsburgh or surrounding area that I might contact? If you yourself do not have this information, is there an organization that might be able to help me? Thanks very much. Time is of the essence. I need to get the word out ASAP. Phyllis Stern

Thank you Emily for allowing me to read your writtings, they have helped me alot today, the past year has been the wrost for me since VN, they say I have PTSD but am stilling waiting on the VA for help, so I seek in places like yours. that if only for a minitue or two aloww be to escape the pain. It hurts now more then it did as just a boy, funny my strink told am still that boy that I was before VN, just that am stuck. The donut dollies only came to our LZ once in my two years there, but I remember you or someone like you and I thank you for at least an hour or two to beable to forget where I was. Even remember the game bag, did'nt play any just lost myself in the sigth of a real girl(women) again and dreamed of proms, and parking again, dreamed of the real world, funny am still looking for the real world and I am going to find it again, I became a cop, married rasied a family and tryed to act normal, but I never was, and the last few years it all came out of me again, I've been told thats a good thing the beginning of healing, but it does'nt feel good, days I wish I where back at the LZ. But God did'nt let me come home with out reasons! Sorry, all I wanted to say was thank-you for caring and being there for all my brothers. You too are a veteran in eyes, I salute you Emily and all your sister. God Bless Steve

Resent 05/06/2001 Dear Emily, In January I enjoyed the chance to meet and visit with scores of vet at Winterfest in New Glarus. I am sorry I did not make your acquaintance, since Diane Shufelt thinks you might be able to assist in one of my inquiries. I always valued the role of the American Red Cross field service representatives in VietNam, and I am delighted to have had the chance to greet them, especially gals like you and Diane Shufelt. I want to say "Thank you" for your service to the armed forces and our generation thirty years ago. If it was difficult for service personnel, I always felt it had to be very challenging for the scores of US civilians who were in-country. The really pleasant circumstance of being able to talk and smile (OR "grin like idiots") at "round eyed" American girls three decades ago in ARC facilities and USO service centers was a pleasant reminder of our homeland and the inevitability of returning there. You and your associates offered a very gracious alternative. By the way, regarding the American Red Cross: 1) I explained to Diane but I need to repeat this for you. I am keenly interested in discovering where the ARC might have its VietNam archives (especially SIGN IN BOOKS from your centers); can you recommend a resource I might turn to inside the American Red Cross national organization? 2) also, in the ARC network of folks like yourself it would be GREAT if my division association could identify the ARC reps who were stationed at the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal Division) rear area sites like Chu Lai, Duc Pho and DaNang. First, it would nice to say "thanks" and, second, it would be great to discover if they kept in touch with veterans who might not know about our organization, the Americal Division Veterans' Association(ADVA). Our association "Struggles" in locating its VietNam Veterans since the division has NO HOME BASE in the states. Ironically in both World War II and VietNam the Americal Division was activated overseas and it "stood down" overseas. Any help in locating our personnel is graciously received. I would have asked these questions on Saturday night, but the timing was tough and I did not discover your real value as an ARC rep until later in the week. Any help you can provide is appreciated. HHC scouts, 2/47 Inf. 9th Inf Div. 68-69 Hey roundeye girl, WELCOME HOME! It doesn't matter whether you're male or female-the war impacted all who served. You're writings seem to reveal the struggle and finally victory over the insanity of war and it's lifelong hold on people who cannot and will not let it go. I am still afraid to open the lid on all the memories--still too hard to examine. Your writings seem to allow the ever slightess view of the past with tenderness and compassion and respect for those who served. You've given me the courage to look deeper and try to remove the 1000 yard stare from my eyes. Thanks for being there then....and for now. Doc Pardue

Emily, I served with CoA, 1/6th INF, 198th LIB, Americal Division, Jan 69 thru Jan 70. I and three of my fellow soldiers were wounded in the Rocket Pocket west of Cha Lai on 15 Mar 69. I was medevaced to the 27th surg hospital, transferred to the 312th evac, and sent the the 6th convalescence hospital in Cam Ranh Bay. I attended the dedication of the womens memorial along with my wife and youngest son in 93. I tried to say thank you to every nurse i saw there that day but found none from the 312th evac. I remember that day like it was yesterday when 2 great americans died and a young kid from pennsylvania became a man. I remember the care and kindness given to us by the nurses at the 27th surg the 312th evac and at the 6th conv. I don't remember telling them thank you so I hope I'm doing that now. Thank you. Great poems that really touched me deeply. I was just browsing vn-related websites for personal interest (i'm a 28 yrs old guy graduated in contemporary history) as i came across your site. Your poems contents made me realize the fundamental role played by nurses not only in vn war but also in others conflicts, too often undervalued and overlooked. Don't you think that the time has come to start a thorough review of their gestures and a real celebration of their incontrovertible bravery? Emily, I cannot tell you how much your poem has touched me. I've been searching for VN Donut Dollies for so long and have just begun to find some. When my friend, Cpt. Sonny Gratzer found your poem and sent it to me I was thrilled. It speaks volumes!! I'm sure our paths didn't cross in Viet Nam. I was there from 1967-68, mostly with the Big Red One in Lai Khe, with shorter assignments in Da Nang and Chu Lai. Cpt. Gratzer and another VN Vet (also a computer whiz) have been helping me set up a website to search for VN Donut Dollies. Would you visit the site and add to it if you like? We hope to have some sort of reunion as soon as we can round up a bunch of us. Ginny De Shano and Jan Small have been in touch with me and are on the site now. It's not finished, so we are using Cpt. Gratzer's address right now, but as soon as we have more girls added we will have our own address. Please feel free to write to Cpt. Gratzer. And I'd love for you to write me. Also, if you by chance know the whereabouts of Jackie Lively Norris I'd be grateful to have her address. Please visit the site at www.sonnygratzer.com/donut/index_htl and/or Bandit6@sonnygratzer.com And once again, thanks for your wonderful poem which spoke for all of us. Do you continue to write? We'd love to add poetry and stories to the site. Hoping to hear from you. Sincerely, Patty Bright Fortenberry

I plan to also share your poetry with them. I am truly amazed that these sophomore don't know that women served in Vietnam. My father was a Navy doctor signed to the Marines and was in Chu Lai from '66-'67. My father, my students and I all hold you in Veteran status. You are an inspiration!
