Since your strip has moved to the regular comics page I never miss it. What you are doing with the Raptor character is an excellent opportunity for educating young people. Brent's problem isn't just a rotton parent, or weight induced clumsiness, or poor self esteem. All these problems, including the rotten mother can be the result of an inherited disorder affecting both personalities, called insulin resistance that can lead to diabetes in some and personality disorders in others. Please read about it in The "Insulin Resistant Diet" by Hart and Grossman. Your readers will bless you if Brent learns the practical guidelines that will change his life.

How interesting to read about Jerry Jenkins- writer for Gil Thorpe. Jack Burrill was "Uncle Jack" to us, our mother's brother. Characters in the original strip were modeled after our family. Candee and myself (Lori) share your faith in Jesus! Good to have you follow up on Uncle Jack's work!

Oops... let me correct a mistake from the last message posting. It has been brought to my attention that actually it WAS explained what happened to Marty Moon's proposed basketball coaching job. In January, 2001, there was a strip where Marty tells "Mr. King" that he will have to turn down the job for now. All right, that was my mistake. But the "Gil Thorp" strip still needs to be scrapped or revamped. It just isn't fun to read anymore.

Let me quickly correct a small typo. It was mid-2000 (not mid-2001) when--on my opinion--the Gil Thorp strip began its relentless downhill spiral.

How many other longtime "Gil Thorp" readers besides me feel that it's time to retire what USED TO BE a great strip. For at least the last year (since mid-2000 or so) this strip has been poorly done. The story lines drift with little purpose and too many things are left unexplained. For example, remember over a year ago when Marty Moon was approached by another high school about becoming the head basketball coach? Moon accepted and said he would start once the football season was over ("...time for one more scoop" he was thinking). But we never heard another thing about it! Did he change his mind or what?? Not only that, a few months ago Moon suddenly turned into Mr. NiceGuy. He helped clear Jarvis White of the suspicion that he was on steroids, plus he helped a lady pick up her spilled groceries. Then Moon starts goes back to his anti-Thorp self and resumes his mean, sniping style of reporting. What gives?? And then remember last summer (2001) when Thorp enters that golf tournament? During a practice round, he plays poorly. So then he starts sneaking into the course late at night to practice, and within a few weeks he (and his wife) both win the tournament?! Gee, is golf really that easy? Just a little bit of practice (late at night), and your golf game dramatically improves almost overnight? Give me a break! The strip was great when the original artist drew it. I read it fondly back in the 1970's and 1980's. Then the original artist died in 1996, other people took over the strip, and (like I said at the beginning), the strip has turned stupid since roughly mid-2001. It's time for Gil Thorp to file for Social Security. Either that, or find a new artist. How do the rest of you feel? Thanks for your feedback.

Although there will surely be difficuties in the days ahead, I want to assure all Americans that I have assembled the greatest group of advisors in the history of this country. Led by 4 x Medal of Honor winner, Marty Moon, we have the right people in the right positions to prevail over the forces of evil. Although Dick says that I cannot go into details, I want you to know that in a secret mission to a faraway land, Marty brought back the intelligence neccessary to deliver a crushing blow to the terrorists. God bless the U.S.A., and god bless the Legendary Marty Moon.

The discussion of Marty Moon is riveting. Clearly, no amount of butchering by the current writer can destroy the polarity of the two central characters in the strip, Gil Thorp and his ego--I mean Gil Thorp and Marty Moon. Whether it's Gil or Marty who is the good one is anyone's best guess, although I suspect the current writer is trying to push his own view that they're both bad, very bad people for not accepting Jesus Christ as their personal savior. Still, all this does not really answer the fundamental question that the comic strip poses: Why does it hurt when oldtip pees?

What a sad day this is. Today marks the fourth anniversary of the murder of the scholarly educator, Dr. Arnold Brett, at the hands of the villanous Thorp. Here's hoping that the Legendary Broadcaster, Marty Moon, will continue his efforts to expose Thorp's treachery and put him on death row, where he belongs.

It's a shame the readers of this strip have not been able to see the continual charitable exploits of Mr. Moon over the past several weeks, but have instead been forced to witness first hand the nefarious thorp and his schemes to wrestle the Milford Golf Tournament trophy away from its rightful winner. Sneaking onto the course at night, scheming with the police chief, changing the leaderboard scores, attempting to intimidate his neighbor; all committed by thorp within the past 2 weeks. Hopefully, Mr. Moon will return from his hiatus assisting with peace negotiations amonst middle east delegates and put a stop to the shameful display of win-at-all-costs mentality by the murderous thorp.

The Truth? Legendary.

The Golf Tournament? A Disgrace.

LT, I used to doubt the greatness of the Legendary Broadcaster, Marty Moon, as well. Once I became educated to his heroic feats (like the time he rescued a person from the jaws of a large crocodile) I realized what a legendary figure he really is. I suggest you open your mind to the facts. By the way, slupy may be a littel dense, but I'm sure he resents being referred to as a "fool".

I must take exception with my good friend Hydro on one small point. This strip was superb when it was blessed with the presence of the scholarly educator, Dr. Arnold Gary Brett. His vicious murder at the hands of Thorp and the subsequent coverup was a travesty of justice. I continue to hope that the tireless efforts of the Legendary Marty Moon will expose Thorp for the criminal he is.

I very much agree that the strip has gone way downhill the last couple years. Perhaps it's time for Gil to announce his retirement because the strip has run its course. At least it was a great strip from the 1970's through the late 1990's, but now ...

Geez--this trick that Gil has just pulled on Marty Moon was all too predictable. Anyone who remembers that "flashback" strip from 1997 where Gil had a hidden tape recorder when he tricked Arnold Brett (back when they were college rivals) into admitting that Arnold had made up lies about him in the college newspaper, would have anticipated this strip's latest twist. As soon as the strip showed Moon talking to this shadowy figure in the alley, I guessed right off the bat that it was Gil and that he probably had a hidden tape recorder. It was just too easy to anticipate.

Am I the only person who's caught an inconsistency in the storylines? Marty Moon is engaged to Peaches, right? But in the fall of 1988, there is a brief sequence where Bitsy Twill dashes out of a deli after stealing a sandwich. Marty Moon is in there with his WIFE and tells the deli owner he'll pay for the sandwich out of sympathy for Bitsy. But we never read subsequently about Marty's getting a divorce?! So what happened to his wife from 1988?

I have been a faithful reader of Gil Thorp for the past 25 years. This season though was the first time that he did not go for a win but was testing his running game and lost. This may be a result of an undue influence of being published in the Chicago Tribune and following the Bear's example. Please do not make Gil a image of the Bear coaches, I need at least one winning football team.

Is milford going to the football playdowns 1997? They went undefeated in the valley so what happens next? they are already talking about basketball.

Was happy to find this site. Been following Gil for over 15 years. I call his strip my Soap opera. There was a site before but it wasn't running when I tried to get there. How long has Gil been around?

Can't say that we cried when Arnold passed on (hey, he's just a cartoon character, and a dastardly one at that, OK? Glad he wasn't the principal at North Andover High School in the late 1960s!) but have to hand it to Gil to handle it perfectly. In real life, many people set out to make enemies, yet can't figure out why people don't automatically "hate back". Now, Gil, the staff, and the Mudlarks can get down to the business of football! And to you old timers -- I have followed the Coach for over 35 years through the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune. Dale Ek? Anyone remember Ox Hartley, Button Baily, and Gink Fowler?

Comments: God bless Gil. I often wonder if there is anything Gil cannot due. I was expecting a miracle from Gil this week when Arnold Brett died. Although it was good to see Gil and Mimi consoling Victoria in her hour of need. I look forward to reading him every day in the chicago tribune. My wife and I are proud owners of Milford High t-shirts.
