It can take our missions a day of riding in vans over country roads, perhaps flooded with monsoon rains or sweltering under tropical heat, to reach a clinic we know is serving the needs of as many as 10,000 people. Many of these clinics function with little medical equipment and few basic medical supplies. Most of the patients at these clinics are women and children. Malnutrition, tuberculosis, malaria and cholera are usually present. There is the ongoing tragedy of children being maimed and blinded when a hidden land mine explodes in the fields where they work and play. These land mines are the deadly legacy of a war these children never knew.
Through this person-to-person approach, we get to know the doctors and nurses who run the hospitals and clinics, and we return to the same hospitals and clinics as often as possible. In this way, we ensure that our critically needed medical supplies reach their ultimate destinations, a guarantee PHAM pledges to our supporters and sponsors.
