I have recently been introduced to your books and hence your writing. My son was a junior in high school last year. He was approaching the last book of the year and the last English final. I was a bit concerned about his love of email and less of books. So I bought the book that he had been assigned, Lake in the Woods and told him I was going to read it too and we would discuss it. He of course gave me that "look". So I started to read. What a great book. I started to discuss it quite casually with my son, no pressure and low and behold he was involved with the story , he was involved with the characters, he was involved with the technique. He received an "A" on his essay final and I went on to introduce Lake in the Woods and The Things They Carried to my Book Club. There are many things I like about the books and your writing. Thank you, the story lives the story grows...

Dear Mr. O'Brien, My students have just completed a study of your short story, "On the Rainy River." They, along with their teacher, feel that your portrayal of a young man faced with the serious choices of an uncertain time was both realistic and compelling. My husband is a Vietnam vet. Through him and others of my generation who sacrificed so much to serve over there, I feel a real connection to the events of the war and have tried to convey that feeling to my students. Thanks for sharing your remarkable talent with the rest of us.

Tim....Just read The things they carried. It was one of the most moving books I have ever read. It confirmed all of the things that I thought our boys had to endure. I have only one thing that I disagree with.....the choice to go to war instead of Canada was the brave one. To knowingly go to the pits of hell, and put your life on the line is the bravest choice of all. May God bless you and keep you safe and nightmare free.

I am currently a sophomore at Colorado State University majoring in English. This Fall semester I decided to take a class called "20th Century Fiction" due to the fact that I love fiction so much and am always looking for a great read. We have begun to read "The Things They Carried" and are almost finished with it and I have to say it has soared to the top of my charts becoming my favorite book of all time. It is a literary masterpiece, very gripping and emotional. I think O'Brien is simply a genious for the way he writes and can make you feel his stories in your gut, much in the same way, I'm sure, the war made him feel and still feels to this day. I thank him for opening my eyes to something I was so foreign to. For those of you who haven't read this book, I highly recommend it!

I was wondering about the constant reference to the main character as Paul Berlin; Why didn't you just use Paul or Berlin? Is there a deep reason why you didn't allow the character the formal name of Berlin or the informal name of Paul? Also why in most of your scencery did you have some form of water? What is the symbolism behind that?

I remain profoundly and painfully branded by the use of your exquisiste language. to one who will never see war through your eyes, nor know reality through your lense... you have climbed the summit that none knew that they wanted to go and were able to see that war is always a defeat for humanity. and yet never escapable, erasable, finite. for it cannot ever end

Dear Tim, I did my dissertation on books about Vietnam and so have been reading you since my first hardback copy of "If I Die..." I just finished "July,July" and thought it was brilliant. I teach a course on Viet lit. now in high school and we take excerpts from all you stuff, esp. "Cacciato" and "In the Lake..." I just wanted to thank you for your life's work, what you have given to us with your struggles and your art, and I want to encourage you to always keep writing. Your work helps those of us immeasurably who want to teach young people about Vietnam, war, and what it does to humanity. Thank you. Sincerely Michael Bartz

Quite possibly the best book I have ever read is "The Things They Carried." Parts of the novel made me feel as if I were there watching everything going on. Although only a teenager I know how soldiers feel about past experiences in wars, especially Vietnam. How Norman Bowker drove around the beautiful lake, watching the hiking kids and his old girlfriend, wanting to talk to someone about his experience. And when he couldn't, he realized that no one would understand. The way you have described the characters thoughts and actions made it chilling. Although I have not read "July, July," I greatly look forward to reading it. Thank you for enlightening me with your novels.

I wish I could call myself a fan of yours but I have only read one of your books, "The Things They Carried." I started it yesterday and could not put it down. I aspire to be a writer. I have no horrindous, gruesome, yet rich background to draw from-I am seventeen years old-but I write from my imagination. My dad is a Vietnam vet. I don't know how many of the stories in your book were things you saw and heard and how much came from your imagination, but it gives me a profound respect for you and all other Vietnam vetrens. What I want to say is Thank You-for serving this country, for inspiring me, and most of all, for giving me an understanding and appreciation of what that war was like. "The Things They Carried" was great, amazing, astounding, and profound when read by someone who has only tasted the rewards of your's and other's struggle, PEACE. Thank You for going off to a war before my birth, thank you for fighting when many who were your age ran, or burned draft cards. Thank you for being a Soldier, and more importantly thank you for living and writing, so that the green and naive boys, like me, can understand what our fathers did and suffered through. Thank You again Sincerely, Ryan A. Lane

Mr. O'Brien, I am a retired English teacher. You first captured my interest at the Breadloaf Writer's Conference in 1983. I think you were just getting started in your writing career. Anyway my first "O'Brien Experience" was GOING AFTER CACCIOTTA, a marvelous story. I've since taught THE THINGS THEY CARRIED in high school and will teach it this fall in college freshman English. My passion is to awaken young people to the Viet Nam war. Your books have made it possible. Thank you so much!! Lynn Lorenzetti

Hello!! I am currently reading the book: The Things They Carrired. I'm only on the third chapter, but so far I've really enjoyed it. My english teacher told us we were only going to read about three chapters, but I've decided to read the entire book on my own time because it seems real interesting. I'm looking forward to reading this wonderful book!!

My youngest son had read "The Things They Carried" for his Engilsh class. My oldest, an Engilsh teacher, was familiar with the novel and they were discussing it one day. Being a Vietnam Vet it got my attention. I picked up the book and truly enjoyed it. The first chapter is simply stunning! The Ghost Soldiers chapter gave me goose bumps. Great insite on the "night guard duty" psychology. At the time I thought it was just me seeing and hearing things that were not there. A great read. H Troop 10th Cav 72-73

Tim, My Father is also a veteran of the Viet Nam war, and I would like to thank you for your tales of Viet Nam, because it not only provided me with the most amazing book I have ever read, but it showed me exactly what my father has not talked about all of these years and why.
