REMFS
The author is giving his book away online. Get it here. The first few pages look really good. Before you think, "you get what you pay for;" read his reasoning: "
My first book was published nationally in hard cover in June, 2000. The soft cover followed in November, 2001. Critics love it. Readers love it. You probably never heard of it.
The book is called Rescuing Jeffrey. It was critically acclaimed, under–promoted, and didn’t reach nearly the audience I hoped for.
I got that enthusiastic New York Times review. But I didn’t get you.
This time I hope it will be different.
While other people look for buyers for other books, I intend to look for readers for REMFS. Because (as any author will tell you) no book really comes to life until readers have read it."

We Were Soldiers Once and
Young: Ia Drang-The Battle that Changed the War in Vietnam
ARMY 1/7 2/7 CAV, 1965: An extremely well respected dissection of the battle of Ia Drang, fought at LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany. You will find here eyewitness accounts from both sides of the battle. But what impressed me the most was the attempt to identify so many of the participants by name, especially the soldiers who were killed. This battle is also covered in Chickenhawk

Days of Decision : An Oral History of Conscientious Objectors in the Military During the
Vietnam War
From a review: "Very human stories. This study demonstrates the value of oral history in studying the war in Vietnam." I would add that if you want to learn about the war and what it did to this country, you must read the words of those who protested the war as well.

Greene, Graham
The Quiet American
Funny how much Graham Greene could see right at the beginning. Whoever wrote the blurb on the back of my 1957 paperback edition didn't get it. Looking squarely back, that long forgotten editor enthused "The scene is in Saigon in the violent recent years when the French were desperately trying to hold their footing in the Far East." If you think this is some dusty novel, be forewarned that Greene has a quirky style and a couple of times he raised the hair on the back of my neck.

Gruhzit-Hoyt,
Olga This is a collection of pieces by the women below. The author
has taken their words and reworked them. Although the style with its passive voice
is a bit off-putting, the power of the collective and individual voices cannot be
denied. This is a very important addition to the small body of work on women who
served in Vietnam. Like all such books, it is not easy reading. Take your time
with it. List of women interviewed. |
