Before, During, & After
"Dried Corsages"

"The military, which prided itself on the records it kept in Vietnam -- counting the enemy number of weapons captured, for example -- cannot to this day say with certainty how many women served.  The army that sent them never bothered to count them.  The estimate most frequently given is that a total of 7,500 served in the military in Vietnam."

Laura Palmer, "Shrapnel in the Heart"

Remembering Linda Van Devanter . . .

And a special message to
all those women who served:

ALL women who served in Vietnam were volunteers, whether civilian or military.  At one time there was discussion about drafting women nurses, but this was never implemented.  Some women military asked to go to Vietnam, and some were sent against their wishes and even against recruiter's promises, but all were volunteers because they voluntarily signed up for the military.

The Vietnam Women's Memorial in DC is not The Vietnam Nurse's Memorial.  Don't listen to the tour guides! <g>  It is a memorial to all women who served in Vietnam.

Emily's Poem "Women's Memorial"

these three sisters are one
A circle portrayed by individual snapshots in time
of a past which ultimately bonds forever
we who served
the caring, brave and sometimes fragile women of war

If China Beach brought you here . . . read "Citizen Jane: China Beach, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and U.S. Popular Memory" by Kim Heikkila

  • It was early in 1989 when Diane Evans received a phone call from a China Beach writer asking for her help in responding to the complaints they had been receiving from women veterans unhappy with the show’s female characters. "
Incountry Women (ICW) ICW: an email discussion group for many women who served in Vietnam. Coffee Cup

"We went to a foreign country in service of our country...we gave aid and encouragement to a whole segment of our brothers/sisters...we survived a war...we are noble...we are brave...we are adventurous...we are an active part of world history...we are interesting...we have lived such exciting lives...we have gone far beyond the boundaries allowed to most of our sisters...
we did it together...and we still have each other."

Patricia "Mama-san" Brimeyer
