U.S. Gas Producers Applaud Announcement that Mexican Gas Association Will Support Rapid Tariff Reduction
Washington, D.C. -- The announcement today that the Mexican Gas Association (MGA) will support a rapid removal of Mexico's current 6 percent tariff on natural gas imports should improve chances for an early demise to the tariff, according to the Natural Gas Supply Association (NGSA). The announcement was made by Angelica Fuentes, MGA president, at a meeting of the Natural Gas Roundtable in Washington.
Under the terms of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), natural gas exported from the U.S. to Mexico is subject to a 6 percent tariff, scheduled to be reduced gradually over the next decade. NGSA and other U.S. natural gas organizations have asked the U.S. Trade Representative to seek immediate elimination of the tariff, which is the only such tariff among the NAFTA parties. (See NGSA press release of June 16, 1997.) NGSA views the current tariff as a barrier to increasing exports of U.S. gas to Mexico.
