Welcome to Gonzaga
Rugby
Gonzaga Rugby was established in 1988 as
Eye Street Rugby and recognized as a Varsity sport in 1994. Gonzaga
plays in the Potomac Rugby Union (PRU), where they were champions in
1998, 2000,
2001. 2002,
and 2003. In 1997, 1999, Gonzaga
finished second in the PRU, and have qualified for Eastern Regionals
the last six seasons. In 1998,
Gonzaga finished third in the Nation, second in the Eastern Regionals
and first in the nationally known Cherry Blossom Tournament. In 2001,
Gonzaga finished eleventh in the National Championships, second in the
Eastern Regionals and first in the Cherry Blossom Tournament.
Gonzaga Rugby welcomes all
serious
student-athletes to play. Any student enrolled at Gonzaga is eligible
to participate. No rugby playing experience is necessary. Most of our players had no prior experience upon joining.
Rugby uses a variety of skills, so there is a position for most sizes.
Our qualified coaches prepare all players for competition, safety and
the sportsmanship of the game.
If you are interested in a competitive
sport and would like to be part of the Gonzaga winning tradition, Gonzaga
Rugby invites you to join us. Find out more about the game from our
returning players, or from those
who played rugby at Gonzaga.
If you have any questions about Gonzaga Rugby, contact team captains
Nate McGrath '04 and Brian
Raltson '04.
League games are usually played on Fridays.
Games may also be scheduled during the weekday. Tournament and
playoffs matches are scheduled during the weekends. Most of the
league games are within an hour away. In the last seven years,
we have qualified for out of town competitions. Gonzaga Rugby
has played in tournaments or toured the following locations in the last
five seasons: Doylestown (PA), Indianapolis, Colorado Springs, Dallas,
New York, Fairfield (CT), Columbus (OH), Ireland, Wales, England, and
Cayman Islands. Our home field is to be determined.
Depending on post-season results, Gonzaga's season may run into mid-May.
