 Pharmacal Is Proud To Become An AALAS Foundation Sponsor

    Pharmacal Research Laboratories is proud to become a sponsor of the AALAS FOUNDATION. Adopting  Advocating Leadership Through Education (ALTE) as a primary theme for fundraising, the Foundation will be in a position to increase the public's understanding of the benefits of animals used in biomedical research.
     The Foundation seeks to implement programs to benefit the industry and society in the following areas:

* Training and Education
* Special Projects
* Public Outreach

     One of the new AALAS FOUNDATION projects, supported with funding from Pharmacal Research Laboratories, is "Public Outreach Training". This encompasses:

* The development of training programs for AALAS members to do public presentations.

* The designing of various curriculums and materials depending on the age and setting of the target audience.

* The development of a listing of public outreach materials published by other organizations and eventually a speaker database that can be accessed by AALAS members who have received requests for a speaker in their area.

      Pharmacal Research Laboratories has always been dedicated to the Biomedical Research Field. Supporting the AALAS Foundation is one more way that PRL is showing our devotion to this important field.

  Virus Outbreak

  Pharmacal Research Laboratories has been closely following the recent SDAV outbreak.  We are aware of the concerns for containing this virus. If your facility does have an outbreak of this or any virus, please contact the salesperson in your area or call us at 1-800-243-5350. Our people enter many facilities and they need to be aware of any condition that might impact their requirements upon entering your facility or the next facility. Regularly scheduled visits may have to be postponed.
     Our consultants have informed us that SDAV is an enveloped virus that can reside on the soles of shoes, sneakers, etc. Sanitizing the soles of shoes or wearing booties when working in the facility, greatly reduces the chances that people will be the vector in the transmission of this virus.
     Pharmacal has four products that are virucidal against many enveloped and some non-enveloped viruses:
QUATRICIDE® PV
QUATRICIDE® PV-15
QUATRICIDE® TB
CLIDOX-S®
For further information, please call Tammy at 1-800-243-5350.

 QUATRICIDE TB No More Foot Baths??

        Many facilities require all people entering their site to use foot baths.  The purpose of such is to remove excess soils from the feet and to provide some disinfection to footwear. Facilities using foot baths traditionally put Quatricide® mixtures or bleach in the bath as the principle disinfectant.
       The drawbacks to the foot bath are many.  First, of course, the cost of placing large vats of a disinfectant out for general use is rather high.  The foot bath, to be effective, must be changed frequently, usually once a day, and all contents properly disposed of.  Secondly, the foot bath may be a safety issue in facilities where wet feet may slide quickly on some flooring surfaces.
       Another drawback is the bleach issue.  Studies have shown that when bleach (sodium hypochlorite) comes in contact with gross soils, a chemical reaction occurs, resulting in the release of a carcinogenic gas.  Bleach will also attack leather shoes with very unpleasant results for the owner of the shoe.
       Facilities using the foot baths as part of their sanitation program might want to consider using Quatricide® TB in spray bottles in place of the foot bath. Quatricide® TB is a ready-to-use high level quaternary ammonium disinfectant. Efficacy tests have shown that Quatricide® TB is an effective tuberculocidal product.  In addition Quatricide® TB is effective against canine parvovirus.  This product is sold in convenient 32 ounce ready-to-use spray bottles, which can be placed strategically in the facility for easy use, replacing the bulky foot bath.    Quatricide® TB should be sprayed directly on the soles of footwear.  The product does not release noxious fumes like bleach. Quatricide® TB also offers a wider and better kill of microbes than other quaternary ammonium products and can out perform bleach in situations where there is a build up of heavy organic soils. If you would like more information about Quatricide® TB contact your Pharmacal representative or call us at 1-800-243-5350.

 Pharmacal's Automatic Chemical Proportioning & Dispensing Equipment Part I

  Pharmacal offers a variety of chemical proportioning and dispensing systems to automatically mix disinfectants and cleaners at their proper use dilutions. The automatic dispensing equipment eliminates the need for manual mixing and decreases the possibility of employee exposure to the concentrated chemicals. By eliminating manual mixing, the possibility of incorrect dilutions is reduced. Incorrect dilutions can effect the disinfecting ability of the product. Installation requires a cold water source.

HYDRO 835

     In part I of this series, we will be featuring the HYDRO 835. This single chemical dispenser in a durable stainless steel enclosure is ideal for filling buckets, gallon bottles, and diptanks. Each unit is equipped with an air gap eductor to prevent backflow of concentrated  chemicals into the water supply. Adjustment of the chemical concentration is made by exchanging color coded metering tips. Should you have any questions concerning our automatic dispensing systems, please contact your Pharmacal Representative or call us at  800-243-5350.
     Part II of this series will appear in our next newsletter and  feature the HYDO 911.

 Water Delivery Systems

     Pharmacal continues to supply premium, customized aquatic housing systems for the animal research industry. We provide systems for both fish (eg- zebra, goldfish, minnows) and amphibians (eg-Xenopus sp., Rana sp., salamanders).
     We are able to design these systems around our customer's domestic water source and needs.

*Constant and timed flow-through systems utilize domestic water sources and mix hot and cold supplies to provide proper water temperature. The constant flow system tanks require low maintenance, as they are constantly flushed with fresh water. The timed flow design removes less waste daily but can be emptied and filled quickly if debris builds up.

* Recirculating systems employ a series of filtration devices to clean the water in the system, while minimizing water usage. Only 30% of the total system volume is used as replacement water per week.

*Balanced water delivery systems are capable of adjusting ultra-pure water (eg- reverse osmosis, deionized) to the proper conductivity before it contacts the animals. This system can be designed to flow through animal tanks or enter and flush recirculating systems.

     Proper animal health starts with proper design. Our ability to conform to each customer's facility and research needs equates to the best possible environment for the animals.
