Emergency Eyewashes and Showers For controlling eye, face, or bodily injuries caused by flying particles or splashing injurious liquids, Emergency Eyewash Stations and Showers are your first line of defense. Although the OSHA standard 29CFR 1910.151 is broad in its guidelines, current ANSI standards provide key recommendations in establishing an effective Eye/Face/Body first aid procedure:
  • Stations should be installed at a distance of no more than 10 seconds or 100 feet from a recognized hazard or reduced to 25 feet depending upon the severity of the potential hazard;
  • emergency wash stations should be clearly identified with multiple signs, brightly colored (yellow), pictorial as well as written, and mounted at least 7 feet high so as to be seen above any equipment;
  • fixed stations should provide a minimum 15-minute supply of water at a flow rate of:
    • 0.4 gallons per minute for eye wash
    • 3 gallons per minute for eye/face wash
    • 30 gallons per minute for body shower.
  • portable eye/face stations must provide sufficient water flow for 15 minutes from the point of activation;
  • bacterial-static agents should be added to the water in portable units to preserve and maintain water quality for up to six months;
  • fixed units should be inspected and flushed at least once a month;

Installation Safety showers and eyewash units should be installed with as much care as a sprinkler system. Water supply lines must provide an uninterrupted flow of water with the proper pressure. Caution should be taken to use the correct pipe size. All piping should be at least as large as the inlet of the valve. All eye and eye/face washes should be connected to a drain in order to assure that they will be tested.

Standards Speakman Emergency Equipment meets or exceeds Industry Standards, including ANSI Z358.1-1990. In addition, our equipment is currently being upgraded to meet ISO Standards. This change incorporates a new green paint color on our SAFE-T-ZONE Combination Stations. The green significantly enhances product appearance and is more corrosion resistant.
