Pipe Marking Guide This guide is designed to describe some of the regulations and guidelines of ANSI Standard A13.1-1981. While not comprehensive, this guideline should help in determining pipeline identification requirements. ANSI Standard A13.1-1981 The ANSI Standard for pipe identification is a widely used guideline in determining pipe identification requirements. The purpose of the standard is to "assist in identification of hazardous materials conveyed in piping systems and their hazards when released in the environment." "Pipes are defined as conduits for the transport of gases, liquids, semi-liquids, or fine particulate dust." The standard covers several main points on identification including: Legend The Legend (or wording) is the primary way that the contents of the pipe are communicated. The standard recommends that the wording be brief, informative, and simple but also have sufficient details necessary to identify the hazard. Arrows are used to indicate direction of flow. Arrows are a part of all mechanically applied markers _ no separate arrows are required. Color The color of the pipe marker is used to identify the hazard level of the pipe contents. Size of Letters Letter size is suggested below and is based on the outside diameter of the pipe or covering. The length of the color field is also recommended to give maximum visibility to the marker. The color field include legend plus arrow. Visibility The standard recommends the markers be placed in visible locations on the pipe based on the normal line of sight. Also, it specifically recommends applying markers: Close to valves or flanges. Adjacent to changes in direction, branches and where pipes pass through walls and floors.
