Birth: 1689 in Richmond Co., VA 1
Death: BET. 1775 - 1779 in (probably) Halifax, Virginia 3
Note:
Taken from "THE DODSON (DOTSON) FAMILY OF NORTH FARNHAM PARISH, RICHMOND COUNTY, VIRGINIA: A History and Genealogy of Their Descendants--
Williams and Lucas"
Lambeth was born in the late 1600's in Richmond County Virginia. The births of three of his children are recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register between 1724 and 1734. Thus it is assumed his marriage took place during the early 1720's. His wife was named Sarah and some say she was Sarah Harris, daughter of Philip Harris, and that she may have died on 21 February 1736 as the parish register records such a death for a Sarah. It is not confirmed that this refers to Lambeth's wife, but if so, he quite likely remarried. However, there are no records showing the name of his wife.Lambeth received by will from his father, Charles Dodson, Sr., his father's
"new dwelling plantation with 100 acres of land belonging to it." Lambeth evidently sold this land to his brother, Thomas Dodson, Sr., before 1739. A deed of conveyance has not been found, but on 17 February 1739 Thomas Dodson, Sr., bequeathed to his son, Greenham Dodson, "the whole tract of land I bought of Lambarth Dodson."I appears evident that Lambeth left Richmond County before 1739. His whereabouts are unknown for several years. The Old Halifax County Virginia Plat Book 1, page 20 records a plat for 190 acres on Falling Creek for Lambath Dodson, 11 November 1747. In the same book, page 39, is a plat for 400 acres on Sandy Creek, dated 17 February 1755. Falling Creek may have been meant for Fall Creek and both these locations are probably in present Henry and Patrick counties.
Lambeth's name appears on a poll tax list in Halifax County in 1753 taxed for 1 poll over 21 years. The same year, in July 1753, Wm. Bean, John Stone, and Redmon Fallen were ordered to mark a road from Bean's on Dan R. to the Courthouse, and in October they reported the road viewed and marked. Thereupon the court ordered: "Peter Wilson is appointed Surveyor of that part of the road as leads from John Russell's Mill to Fall Creek, and Samuel Harris is appointed Surveyor of that part of the said road as leads from Fall Creek to Sweating's Fork." The surveyors were ordered to open and clear the roadway using the following tithables, who lived in the vicinity of the road: John Russel & Son, William Mobberly, James Duncan, David Lane, George Chadwell, Lambeth Dodson, Thomas Williamson, John Yates, William Stevens, Silvester Junal, Thomas Smith & Son, Isaac Little & Son, Abram Little, Charles Little, William York, James Wady, John Railey, James Cargill, Redmon Fallon & Son (HISTORY OF PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA.,
Clements, page 61).On 22 June 1765, according to the Pittsylvania County patent book, Lambeth patented 400 acres on the main fork of Mayo River which he transferred to George Gibson on 19 September 1766. Since Lambeth Dodson is found involved in affairs of the Gibson family, it is a probability that his daughter married a Gibson.
The Halifax Patent Book 1, page 121 shows that on 25 August 1775, Lambeth patented 200 acres on the South Fork of Mayo River. This may be the patent for 200 acres issued to him on 1 December 1779, by this time located in Henry County.
Lambeth entered 228 acres in Guilford County, North Carolina on 9 January 1779. It was surveyed 10 June 1779 by Joshua Smith, with William Kellam and Joel Gibson acting as chain carriers. The grant was issued 1 March 1780, 228 acres below and in the fork of Mayo River, beginning at a poplar on the south bank of the North Fork of Mayo in the Virginia line, adjoining Joel Gibson and Philip Angling, and including the improvements of Thomas Gibson and Esaw Dodson. On 9 July 1784, Lambeth Dodson of Henry County, Virginia sold 153 acres of this tract to Zachariah King of Guilford County, North Carolina. Lambeth signed the deed by name. (Guilford deeds 3-212). The remainder of this tract was sold in 1814 by Dodson heirs. It would seem evident that at some point Lambeth Dodson, Jr. took possession of the land and that some of these records may refer to him.
Nothing has been found to indicate when or where Lambeth died, who his possible second wife was, or to prove who his additional children might have been. The births of three of his children were recorded in the North Farnham Parish Register. The others are included with some reservation, but, family records suggest the connection to Lambeth Dodson. There was a George Dodson (Dotson) who may belong to this family. He appeared one time only on Surry County, North Carolina tax lists, in Cleveland's District, assessed for one poll. In the records of Burke County, North Carolina is found mention of George Dodson. On 13 February 1778, William Roberts entered for 200 acres on the north fork of upper Little River including improvements Roberts bought of George Dodson. On 2 January 1779, George Brown entered for 300 acres on the forks of 2nd Little River and Zack's Creek "including improvements George Dodson lives on." (BURKE CO., NC LAND RECORDS (1778), Vol. I, Edith Warren Huggins: taken from the Land Grant Office, Raleigh). Thus, George Dodson was living in Burke Co. in January 1779. Just how long George lived there cannot be determined due to the severe loss of record in Burke County.
There is no record that George Dodson had any children. The first will recorded in the first will book of Carter County, Tennessee is that of George Dotson. His death occurred while the Tennessee territory was the "Territory of the United States of America South of the River Ohio." Before that, the territory was part of North Carolina. The will, dated "June ye 17, 1794," stated simply that his debts were to be paid and "I bequeath my estate to my wife, Elizabeth." It was signed by signature, George Dotson. There was no probate date (Carter County, Tennessee, Wills of Record, June 1794-March 1851, page 1). Nothing else on George Dodson has been found in the records of Carter County or of Washington County from which Carter was formed.
{William Russell died between 1775 and 1777 in Pittsylvania VA leaving a will in which he named his daughter, Lucreasy Dodson. This has not been proven, but it is possible that she married into the Lambeth Dodson family. A Russell family lived near Lambeth Dodson.}
