ID: I1768
Name: Charles DODSON Sr.
Sex: M
Birth: ABT 1649 in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia, USA
Death: 6 FEB 1705 in Richmond County, Virginia, USA
Note:
There is some conflicting information on Charles Dodson, depending on
which genealogist you read. I'll give both versions and the reader can
decide which is more nearly correct. Some of the discrepancies are the
result of new and additional information being made available. Some of
the records stored in Richmond, VA were destroyed by fire and most of
the available records are church (parish) records.
Note:
Note:
Charles Dodson, born about 1649, died 2-6-1705 Richmond Co., VA. Married
Ann Dodson (Daughter of Benjamine Dodson, who gave his daughter a legacy
of land on the James River in Essex Co., Va., May 1652. This joined
John Hill Sr.'s land) (This Benjamine probably came from England.) Ann
was married, before 1680, to Charles Dodson. Her second marriage was to
John Hill, Jr., after Charles' death.
Note:
Note:
On July 8, Charles Dodson leased land in old Rappahannock Co.
Rappahannock Co. became extinct in 1692, being divided into Essex and
Richmond counties. Charles Dodson owned land in both counties by
resided in North Farnham Parish, Richmond Co., Va., where he became a
large land owner.
Note:
Note:
The records show that from 1680 to 1692 he was busy acquiring land which
he and his sons proceeded to improve, and indicated that he had the
confidence of his neighbors. We find him witnessing various documents
and on several occasions he is named in wills as Executor. In a will of
John Lincoln, dictated Dec. 18, 1686, the comment was made in the
affidavit of witnesses that the maker of the will "would have no other
but Charles Dodson as his executor although several insisted that he
have his wife."
Note:
Note:
Until 1686 the Episcopal Church was the State church in Virginia. All
children, regardless of religious affiliation, were required to be
baptized by the minister of the church. Dates of birth and names of
their parents were recorded in parish registers. The same information
was taken of marriages and burials. The church records are preserved.
They are available in the Virginia State Library in Richmond, Va.
Note:
Note:
In the life time of Charles Dodson there were many new imigrants
arriving in Virginia from England. They came in boatloads almost every
month in the year. More and more settlements were established. By 1700
there were more than 80,000 persons living in the tidewater region of
Virginia.
Note:
Note:
During this time the colony was in almost constant trouble with their
ruler, the English government and its representatives. Mainly the
colonists objected to the arbitrary action of the colony officials and
their ruthless demands.

Note:
Note:
The ancestry of the Dodsons of Pittsylvania, Halifax, Henry and Patrick
Counties, Virginia has definitely been traced back to Charles Dodson of
Old Rappahannock County and it seems quite probable that all the early
Dodson families of this section of Virginia were descendants of this
Charles Dodson. However, there are a few instances of Dodson men who
are mentioned in early records of Virginia who were possibly adventurers
and speculators, and who, in all probability, did not become permanent
settlers and who did not leave descendants in the American colonies.
Note:
Note:
Charles Dodson, Sr. is the first of the line of whom we have any record
and we are accepting him as the immigrant ancestor, based on family
tradition, but without definite proof of his arrival in America. We
first find him in Old Rappahannock County where he made a lease of land
on 8 July 1680. Rappahannock County became extinct in 1692, being
divided into Essex and Richmond Counties. Charles Dodson owned land in
both counties but resided in North Farnham Parish, Richmond County,
where he became a large landowner.
Note:
Note:
The records show that from 1680 he was busy acquiring land which he and
his sons proceeded to improve, and the indications are that he had the
confidence of his neighbors. We find him witnessing various documents
and on several occasions he is named as executor of wills. In the will
of John Lincoln, dictated 18 Dec. 1686, the comment is made in the
affidavit of witnesses that the maker of the will "would have no other
but Charles Dodson as his executor although several insisted that he
have his wife."
Note:
Note:
Charles Dodson, Sr. was born c1649 as proven by a deposition sworn in
court on 6 March 1699/1700 stating that he was "aged fifty years or
thereabouts" (Richmond Co., VA Miscellaneous Record Book {Oct.
1699-Sept. 1724}, page 4). Charles died in Richmond County in 1704/05,
leaving a will in which his wife, Ann, and eight children were named.
Note:
Note:
Charles Dodson, Sr. married Ann (surname unknown) probably about
1678-80. After the death of Charles Dodson, Ann married John Hill. She
had remarried by 3 July 1706 on which date John Hill and wife, Anne,
executrix of the Last Will and Testament of Charles Dodson, dec'd,
petitioned the court for an appraisement of the estate. The court
ordered John Rankin, William Smoote, John Mills and Richard White, or
any three of them, to meet at the house of John Hill and appraise and
inventory the estate and report to the next court (Richmond Co. Order Bk
4, Page 171).
Note:
Note:
Thomas Dodson brought an action in court "against John Hill marrying the
Executrix of Charles Dodson." The action was dismissed by the court on
3 April 1707, "the plaintiff not prosecuting' (Richmond Co., Order Bk 4,
page 262). The reason for this court action was not explained.
Note:
Note:
In his will, Charles Dodson, Sr. bequeathed to his wife, Ann, and to his
daughters "moveable estate." To each of his sons, he gave a tract of
land with the restriction that the land not be sold out of the Dodson
name "except that one brother selleth to another and if no male heir
appeareth by none of my sons that then my Daughters may inherit the
land." This proviso caused some consternation and problem for those of
his sons who later wanted to sell out and leave the area. Several, upon
deciding to leave, sold to brothers; one leased to another man "for
three natural lifetimes."

Note:
Note:
The Dodson family traces its origins in a story similar to the Hanks
family. The "original" Dodson in North America is believed to have been
one Charles Dodson who leased land in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia
in the 1680's. Charles is believed to have been born about 1649 but it's
not clear whether his birth took place in England or Virginia. A Thomas
Dodson is listed as an immigrant to Virginia in 1645, and given the
number of Thomases in the family this man possibly could have been
Charles' father, but nothing has been shown to link the two men.
Note:
Note:
Charles Dodson apparently was a prosperous tobacco planter and owned a
large plantation in the North Farnham Parish area of Old Rappahannock
County, across the York River from where the original Thomas Hanks was
cutting down trees. He married his wife Ann prior to 1680 and they had
nine children.
Note:
Note:
Old Rappahannock County was split into Essex and Richmond counties in
1692. Dodson owned land in both counties but lived in Richmond County.
Dodsons were known as large land owners and a leading Virginia family in
southern "tobacco belt" counties, according to Shirley Corbari in her
book The Guio-Dodson Family.
Note:
Note:
When Charles Dodson died in 1705 he left houses and extensive land
holdings (at least 150 acres a piece) to each of his six sons. The women
in the family received "all my moveable estate of what kind soever
within and without". As an interesting stipulation, Charles Dodson
insisted that none of the land out of the name might be sold except one
brother selleth to another and if no male appeareth by none of my sons
[they have no male heirs] that then my daughters may inherit the land.
Note:
Note:
Corbari presented the list of possessions, reprinted in Charles Dodson's
own hand, in her book. The items were appraised and included chests,
chairs, tables, cloth and linen napkins, two spinning wheels, a pestle
and mortar, knives, cart wheels and casks. One of the more expensive
items, valued at 2200 (shillings?) was "one servant man three years
eight months to serve" so Dodson obviously had an indentured servant on
hand.
