2 CONT "Major" Joseph Longacre of Frederick County, Virginia was a Justice of 
2 CONT the peace and Surveyor for about forty years in succession and was twice 
2 CONT High Sheriff. He was clerk of the Forge Iron Works of which Isaac Zane 
2 CONT was proprietor. He plotted and laid out the town of Zanesville, Ohio 
2 CONT which is now a city. He was the owner of a number of slaves. He was the 
2 CONT father of thirteen children, six sons and seven daughters. His daughter 
2 CONT Rebecca was born December 14, 1781. She left her fathers home at the age 
2 CONT of fourteen to live with her brother Dr. Longacre (no I don't know which 
2 CONT brother). He was the owner of forty slaves. She was very timid and when 
2 CONT her brother had occasion to punish the slaves, would lock herself in her 
2 CONT room. She never returned home to live but, in a short time, married Bush 
2 CONT Vance Pangle (Bush Vance b 1774). They lived in Virginia and he was 
2 CONT overseer of Major Longacre's slaves for a short time. He was afterwards 
2 CONT a farmer and moved to Lancaster, Ohio and then to Urbana, Ohio. From 
2 CONT there he moved to north of Lima, Ohio (Sugar Creek Twp, Allen Co). They 
2 CONT lived in the woods and from these trees Vance built their home. 
2 CONT Note: 
2 CONT He was a soldier in the war of 1812 and during this time Rebecca was left 
2 CONT alone to raise at that time their 9 children. At the time of his death 
2 CONT in 1837 their youngest child was only seven. All 15 of their children 
2 CONT were born in VA.
2 CONT Note: 
2 CONT When the children were grown Rebecca sold the farm but kept an interest 
2 CONT in the crops. The land now belongs to the Jacobs. She drew a pension 
2 CONT from Bush in the war of 1812 and spent her remaining years with their son 
2 CONT Elisha Pangle in his home outside of Delphos, Allen Co, OH. Rebecca died 
2 CONT in 1880 at the age of 99 years and 14 days. Rebecca outlived 13 of her 
2 CONT 15 children, Elisha was the last of the children to pass on.

2 CONC to the charge concerning suspicion of witchcraft. (3) George MARTIN sued 
2 CONC William SARGENT, Jr., for slander for saying that "MARTYN's wife had a 
2 CONC child at Capt. WIGGINS and was wringing its neck in Capt WIGGINS' stable, 
2 CONC when a man entered, and she took him by the collar and told him she would 
2 CONC be the death of him if he told." He sued William SARGENT "for saying his 
2 CONC wife was a witch and he would call her a witch." George also sued Thomas 
2 CONC SARGENT for "saying that his son George MARTIN was a bastard and that 
2 CONC Richard MARTIN was Goodwife MARTIN's imp," (a witch's familiar). Charges 
2 CONC were dropped against Thomas SARGENT, William SARGENT Jr. was found guilty 
2 CONC of accusing Susanna of "fornication and infanticide" and George was 
2 CONC awarded ( in what appears to be a public insult) the amount of "a white 
2 CONC wampam peague (colonial currency) or the eigth part of a penny damage" by 
2 CONC magistrates. William SARGENT (Sr?) was acquitted of witchcraft slander, 
2 CONC although "the Court did not agree."
2 CONT (3) 1669, Oct: George MARTIN was sued by Christopher BARTLETT because 
2 CONC Susanna had called him a liar and a thief. The verdict came against 
2 CONC George and Susanna. At the same court session, their son Richard was 
2 CONC "presented by the grand jury at the Salisbury Court, 1669, for abusing 
2 CONC his father and throwing him down, taking away his clothes and holding up 
2 CONC an axe against him." The court found him guilty and sentenced Richard to 
2 CONC be "whipped ten stripes."

2 CONT (1) 1669, Apr: Suit of George MARTIN against William SARGENT, for 
2 CONC slander, in saying MARTYN's wife was a witch. The jury found for the 
2 CONC defendant, but the court "concurred not with the jury." George MARTYN 
2 CONC gave bond that his wife Susanna should appear at the next court to answer 
2 CONC to the charge concerning suspicion of witchcraft. (2) In 1669 Susanna was 
2 CONC required to post 100 pounds bond to appear in court on a charge of 
2 CONC witchcraft, a capital offese. At the same time George MARTIN sued William 
2 CONC SARGENT, Jr., for slander for saying that "MARTYN's wife had a child at 
2 CONC Capt. WIGGINS and was wringing its neck in Capt WIGGINS' stable, when a 
2 CONC man entered, and she took him by the collar and told him she would be the 
2 CONC death of him if he told." He sued William SARGENT "for saying his wife 
2 CONC was a witch and he would call her a witch." George also sued Thomas 
2 CONC SARGENT for "saying that his son George MARTIN was a bastard and that 
2 CONC Richard MARTIN was Goodwife MARTIN's imp," (a witch's familiar). Charges 
2 CONC were dropped against Thomas SARGENT, William SARGENT Jr. was found guilty 
2 CONC of accusing Susanna of "fornication and infanticide" and George was 
2 CONC awarded ( in what appears to be a public insult) the amount of "a white 
2 CONC wampam peague (colonial currency) or the eigth part of a penny damage" by 
2 CONC magistrates. William SARGENT (Sr?) was acquitted of witchcraft slander, 
2 CONC although "the Court did not agree." The records of Susanna's first trial 
2 CONC for witchcraft have not survived, but as she was around for another 23 
2 CONC years, we might assume that she was acquitted. (3b) In 1669 she was bound 
2 CONC over to the Superior Court, but was discharged without trial.
2 CONT (1) 1669, Oct: She was required to acknowledge in open court that she 
2 CONC wronged Christopher BARTLETT in charging him with lying and stealing. (2) 
2 CONC George MARTIN was sued by Christopher BARTLETT because Susanna had called 
2 CONC him a liar and a thief. The verdict came against George and Susanna.
2 CONT (2) 1671: George and Susanna MARTIN became involved in lengthy litigation 
2 CONC over Richard NORTH's estate. Her sister Mary JONES would join them later.
2 CONT (1) 1674: Called John HOYT and his 2nd wife Frances "brother" and 
2 CONC "sister" and their daughter Naomi HOYT "cousin" because her son, was then 
2 CONC husband of their daughter Mary (HOYT) (BARTLETT). These expressions of 
2 CONC relationship were in Susanna MARTIN's testimony in court, wherein she 
2 CONC rehearsed a spirited conversation between herself and HOYT's wife and 
2 CONC daughter Naomi about Thomas TUXBURY of Boston and Newbury, who was 
2 CONC presented at court Apr 1673 for living away from his wife.
2 CONT (2) 1674, Oct: Her inheritance was lost when the court found against her 
2 CONC in the litigation over Richard NORTH's estate.
2 CONT (1,2) 1692, 30 Apr: A warrant was issued for her arrest as a witch. (2) 
2 CONC The warrant, addressed to the Marshall of the County of Essex or to the 
2 CONC Constable of Amesbury, read, "You are in their Majests names hereby 
2 CONC required forthwith or as soon as may be to apprehend and bring (before 
2 CONC us) Susanna MERTIN of Amesbury in ye county of Essex Widdow at ye house

2 CONT (2) 1692, 2 May: She was arrested by Orland BAGLEY, Contable of Amesbury. 
2 CONC "When she saw Orlando BAGLEY approaching on the morning of her arrest, 
2 CONC little did she dream of his errand. He was a personal friend of long 
2 CONC standing, and we can but faintly imagine her surprise when" he read the 
2 CONC warrant. During her preliminary examination the same day, she pled not 
2 CONC guilty and vigorously answered the charges against her. The indictment 
2 CONC against Susanna MARTIN of Amesbury in the County of Essex, widow, was 
2 CONC issued for "witchcrafts and Sorceries wickedly and Feloniously" practiced 
2 CONC in Salem upon Mary WALCOTT of Salem Village, singlewoman, who was 
2 CONC "Tortured Afflicted Pined wasted and Tormented," and was signed by Sarah 
2 CONC VIBBER, Mary WALCOTT, Mr. Samuel PARRIS, Elizabeth HUBBARD and Mercy 
2 CONC LEWIS. As soon as she came in, the "afflicted girls" began having fits. 
2 CONC When asked, "Do you know this woman?", Abigail WILLIAMS said "It is Goody 
2 CONC MARTIN, she hath hurt me often." Eliza HUBBARD said she had not been hurt 
2 CONC by her. Mercy LEWIS pointed to her and fell into a fit. Ann PUTNAM threw 
2 CONC her glove in a fit at her. Susanna laughed out loud. When the magistrates 
2 CONC asked why she laughed, she responded, "Well I may at such folly." She 
2 CONC refused to express any thoughts on what may have ailed the girls but 
2 CONC bluntly stated that she didn't think they were bewitched. Her further 
2 CONC testimony showed that she realized the seriousness of her situation and 
2 CONC she adamantly maintained her innocence.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 11 May: John PRESSEY of Amesbury, aged 53, deposed at his house 
2 CONC in Salisbury that about 24 years ago, he was at Amesbury Ferry upon a 
2 CONC Saturday in the evening near about the shutting in of the daylight, which 
2 CONC was about three miles from his house. As he was going home a little 
2 CONC beyond the field of George MARTIN at a hill called Goodal's hill he was 
2 CONC bewildered and lost his way. Having wandered a while he came back again 
2 CONC to the same place, and setting out again by the light of the moon which 
2 CONC shone bright, he was again lost and came back to the same place. A third 
2 CONC time he set out and came back, but not so far as before, and he knew 
2 CONC where he was, so he set himself his way. In less than half a mile he saw 
2 CONC a light stand on his left hand about 2 rod out of the way. It seemed to 
2 CONC be about the bigness of a half bushel. Seven or eight rods further is 
2 CONC appeared again at the like distance from him as before, and so it did 
2 CONC again a third time. In less than 20 rod, another light lay in his way, 
2 CONC and he having a stick in his hand, he endeavorded to stir it out of the 
2 CONC place and to to give it some small blows. The light seemed to brush up 
2 CONC and move from side to side. As he tried to go away, his heels were struck 
2 CONC up and he laid on his back on the ground, and was sliding into a deep 
2 CONC place (as it seemed to him), but taking hold of some brush or brushes and 
2 CONC so recovered himself. Having lost his coat which he had upon his arm, he 
2 CONC went back to the light, saw his coat and took it up and went home without 
2 CONC any more disturbance there. When he had gone about 5 or 6 rod he saw 
2 CONC Susanna MARTIN then wife of George MARTIN of Amesbury standing on his 
2 CONC left hand as the lights had done. When he reached his house, he "over 
2 CONC went" his own house, but knowing the ground that he was upon, returned 
2 CONC and found his own house. Being then seized with fear, he could not speak 
2 CONC until his wife spoke to him at the door, and was in such condition that 
2 CONC his family was afraid of him. The next day in town he heard that Goodwife 
2 CONC MARTIN was in such a miserable case and in such pain that they swabbed 
2 CONC her body. John PRESSEY and Mary his wife, aged 46 or thereabouts, further 
2 CONC testified that some years after that John PRESSEY had given his evidence 
2 CONC against Susanna MARTIN, and she came and "took these deponents to do 
2 CONC about it and reviled them with many foul words saying we had took a false 
2 CONC oath and what we should never prosper..., particularly that we should 
2 CONC never have but two cows." They further testified that from that time to 
2 CONC this they have never exceeded that number, but something or other has 
2 CONC prevented it, thought they had used all ordinary means for obtaining it 
2 CONC by hiring cows of others for the space of twenty years.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 11 May: Bernard PEACH, aged 43 or thereabouts, deposed that 
2 CONC about six or seven years past, he was living at the house of Jacob MORELL 
2 CONC in Salisbury. Being in bed ion a Lord's Day night, he heard a scrabbling 
2 CONC at the window and saw Susanna MARTIN wife of George MARTIN of Amesbury 
2 CONC come in at the window and jump down upon the floor. She was in her hood 
2 CONC and scarf and the same dress that she was in before a meeting the same 
2 CONC day. She was coming towards his face, but turned back to his feet and 
2 CONC took hold of them and drew his body into a hoop and lay upon him about an 
2 CONC hour and half or two hours, during which time he could not stir or speak. 
2 CONC Feeling himself beginning to be loosened or lightened he strove to put 
2 CONC out his hand among the clothes and took hold of her hand and brought it 
2 CONC up to his mouth and but three of the fingers to the breaking of the 
2 CONC bones. Then MARTIN went out of the chamber down the stairs and out of the 
2 CONC door. As soon as she went away, he called to the people of the house and 
2 CONC told them what was done. He also followed her but the people did not see 
2 CONC her. Outside the door there was a bucket on the left hand side and there 
2 CONC was a drop of blood on the handle, more upon the snow, and her footprints 
2 CONC about a foot without the threshold, but no more footing did appear. About 
2 CONC three weeks later, Susanna desired him to come and husk corn at her house 
2 CONC the nest Lord's Day night, saying that if he did not come it were better 
2 CONC that he did, but he did not go, being then living with N__ OSGOOD of 
2 CONC Salisbury. That night he lodged in the barn upon the hay, and about an 
2 CONC hour or two in the night, Susanna MARTIN and another came towards him. He 
2 CONC having a quarter staff made a blow at them but the roof of the barn 
2 CONC prevented it and they went away. He followed them and as they were going 
2 CONC toward the window he made another blow at them and struck them both down, 
2 CONC but away they went out at the shop window and he saw no more of them. And 
2 CONC the rumor was that MARTIN had a broken hand.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 11 May: William BROWN of Salisbury aged 70 years or thereabouts 
2 CONC deposed that about one or two and thirty years ago Elizabeth his wife was 
2 CONC a very rational woman and sober and one that feared God as was well known 
2 CONC to all that knew her and as prudently careful in her family. She was 
2 CONC going from her own house towards the mill in Salisbury and met there with 
2 CONC Susanna MARTIN the then wife of George MARTIN of Amesbury. Just as they 
2 CONC came together Susanna MARTIN vanished away out of her sight, which put 
2 CONC Elizabeth into a great fright. After this time MARTIN appeared many times 
2 CONC to her at her house and did much trouble her in any of her occasions and 
2 CONC this continued till about February following. When she did come it was as 
2 CONC birds pecking her legs or pricking her with the motion of their wings and 
2 CONC then it would rise up into her stomach with pricking pain as nails and 
2 CONC pins of which she did bitterly complain and cry out like a woman in 
2 CONC travail. After that it would rise up to her throat in a bunch like a 
2 CONC pullet's egg, and then she would turn back her head and say, witch you 
2 CONC shan't choke me. At the time of this extremity the church appointed a day 
2 CONC of humility to seek God on her behalf and thereupon her trouble ceased 
2 CONC and she saw Goodwife MARTIN no more for a considerable time, for which 
2 CONC the church instead of the day of humiliation gave thanks for her 
2 CONC deliverance. She came to meeting and went about her business as before. 
2 CONC This continued till April following at which time summonses were sent to 
2 CONC Elizabeth BROWN, Goodwife OSGOOD by the court to give their evidences 
2 CONC concerning MARTIN, and they did before the Grand Jury gave a full 
2 CONC account. After which time Elizabeth told her husband William BROWN that 
2 CONC as she was milking of her cow, Susanna MARTIN came behind her and told 
2 CONC her that she would make her the miserablest creature for defaming her 
2 CONC name at the court and wept grievously as she told it. About 2 months 
2 CONC after this he came home from Hampton and his wife would not own him, but 
2 CONC said they were divorced and asked him whether he did not meet with one 
2 CONC Mr. BENT of Abbey in England by whom he was divorced. From that time to 
2 CONC this very dayshe has been under a strange kind of distemper frenzy 
2 CONC incapable of any reasonable action through strong of body and healthy of 
2 CONC body. He further testified that when she came into that condition he 
2 CONC procured Doctor FULLER and CROSBY to come to her for her relief, but they 
2 CONC did both say that her distemper was supernatural and no sickness of body 
2 CONC but that some evil person had bewitched her.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 13 May: Jarvis RING of Salisbury deposed that about seven or 
2 CONC eight years ago he had several times been afflicted in the night time by 
2 CONC somebody or something coming up upon him when he was in bed and did 
2 CONC sorely afflict by laying upon him and he could neither move nor speak 
2 CONC while it was upon him, but sometimes made a kind of noise that folks did 
2 CONC hear him and come up to him as soon as anybody came, it would be gone. He 
2 CONC never did see anybody clearly, but one time in the night it came upon him 
2 CONC and he did see the person of Susanna MARTIN of Amesbury. He did perfectly 
2 CONC see her and she came to him and took him by the hand and bit him by the 
2 CONC finger by force and then came and lay upon him awhile as formerly, and 
2 CONC after a while went away. The print of the bite is yet to be seen on the 
2 CONC little finger of his right hand for it was hard to heal.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 13 May: Joseph RING at Salisbury, aged 27 years, deposed that 
2 CONC about the latter end of September last, being in the wood with his 
2 CONC brother Jarvis RING hewing of timber, his brother went home with his team 
2 CONC and left him alone to finish the hewing of a piece for him for his 
2 CONC brother to carry when he came again. As soon as his brother was gone, 
2 CONC there came to him the appearance of Thomas HARDY of the great Island at 
2 CONC Patascataway, and by some impulse he was forced to follow him to the 
2 CONC house of __ TUCKER which was deserted and was about half a mile from the 
2 CONC place he was at work in. In that house did appear Susanna MARTIN of 
2 CONC Amesbury and HARDY and another female person he did not know. There they 
2 CONC had a good fire and drink, it seemed to be cider, there continued most 
2 CONC part of the night, MARTIN then being in her natural shape and talking as 
2 CONC she used to do, but toward the morning MARTIN went from the fire, made a 
2 CONC noise and turned into the shape of a black hog and went away, and so did 
2 CONC the other two persons. He was strangely carried away also and the first 
2 CONC place he knew was by Samuel WOOD's house in Amesbury. In a separate 
2 CONC deposition, he states that he had been strangely handled for the space of 
2 CONC almost two years. In the month of June next after Casco Bay fort was 
2 CONC taken, he was coming between Sandy Beach and Hampton Town when he met 
2 CONC with Thomas HARDY of Great Island and a company of several other 
2 CONC creatures with him. HARDY demanded two shillings, and with that dreadful 
2 CONC noise and hideous shapes of these creatures and fireball, he was almost 
2 CONC frightened out of his wits. In about a half an hour, or indeed he could 
2 CONC not judge the time, they left him and he came to Hampton. About ten days 
2 CONC after, as he came from Boston, he was overtaken by a company of people on 
2 CONC horseback who passed by him, and after they had passed by him, Thoams 
2 CONC HARDY turned about his horse and came back to him with his horse in hand 
2 CONC and desired him to go to Mrs. WHITE's and drink with him, which being 
2 CONC refused he turned away to the company and they all came up together such 
2 CONC a weth (i.e. with so many horses) that it seemed impossible to escape 
2 CONC being trod down by them, but they all went past and then appeared no 
2 CONC more. About October following coming from Hampton in Salisbury Pine Plain 
2 CONC a company of horses with me and women upon them overtook him, and HARDY 
2 CONC being one of them came to him as before and demaned his 2s. of him and 
2 CONC threatened to tear him to pieces. He made him no answer, and so he and 
2 CONC the rest went away and left him. After this, he had divers strange 
2 CONC appearances which forced him away with them into unknown places where he 
2 CONC saw meetings and feastings and many strange sights, and from August last 
2 CONC he was dumb and could not speak till this last April. He also related 
2 CONC that there did come to him a man that did present him a book to which he 
2 CONC would have him set his hand with promise of anything that he would have 
2 CONC and there were presented all delectable things, persons and places 
2 CONC imaginable, but he refusing it, would usually and with most dreadful 
2 CONC shapes, noises and screeching that almost scared him out of his wits. One 
2 CONC time the book was brought and a pen offered him, to his apprehension 
2 CONC there was blood in the ink horn, but he never touched the pen. They never 
2 CONC told him what he should write, nor he could not speak to ask them what he 
2 CONC should write. In several of their merry meetings he had seen Susanna 
2 CONC MARTIN appear among them. The day that his speech came to him again which 
2 CONC was about the end of April last as he was in bed she did stand by his 
2 CONC bed's side and pinched him.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 16 May: John KIMBALL, aged 45 or upwards, deposed that about 23 
2 CONC years ago he being about to remove from Newbury to Amesbury had bought a 
2 CONC piece of land from George MARTON of Amesbury for which he was to pay in 
2 CONC cash or goods upon a certain day in March next following. When the day of 
2 CONC payment came, MARTIN and his wife came for pay and KIMBALL offered them 
2 CONC the choice of three cows and other cattle, but did reserve two cows which 
2 CONC they were not free to part with, they being the first they ever had. 
2 CONC MARTIN himself was satisfied with other pay, but Susanna his wife said 
2 CONC (you had been as good you had) for she will never do you any good (and so 
2 CONC it came to pass) for the next April following that very cow lay in the 
2 CONC fair dry yard with her head to her side (but stark dead) and when she was 
2 CONC floaed no impediment did appear in her for she was a stout lusty cow, and 
2 CONC in a little while after another cow died and then an ox, and then other 
2 CONC cattle to the value of 30 pounds that spring. KIMBALL further deposed 
2 CONC that the same year after he was come to live at Amesbury and was dwelling 
2 CONC in the house of Edmund ELLIOT he was needed to get a dog. Hearing that 
2 CONC the wife of George MARTIN had a bitch that had whelps, he went to her to 
2 CONC get one, but she not letting him have his choice, he did not absolutely 
2 CONC agree for any but said he heard one BLESDELL had a bitch by which he may 
2 CONC supply, but if there was no one else he would have heed of her price. 
2 CONC Being upon that account at BLESDELL's and marked the whelp he agreed for, 
2 CONC George MARTIN came by and asked him whether he would not have one of his 
2 CONC wife's whelps, to which KIMBALL made answer in the negative. The same day 
2 CONC Edmond ELLIOT said he was at the MARTIN's house and heard MARTIN ask his 
2 CONC wife why KIMBALL were not to have one of her puppies. She said he had got 
2 CONC one at Goodman BLESDELL's, and he saw him chhose it and mark it, to which 
2 CONC his wife said, "If I live I'll give him puppies enough." Within a few 
2 CONC days after this, KIMBALL, coming from his intended house in the woods to 
2 CONC Edmond ELLIOT's house where he dwelt about the sunset or presently after, 
2 CONC there did arise a little black cloud in the N.W. and a few drops of rain 
2 CONC and the wind blew pretty hard. In going between the house of John WOOD 
2 CONC and the meeting house, KIMBALL came by several stumps of trees by the 
2 CONC wayside. He can give no reason of that made him tumble over the stumps 
2 CONC one after another, though he had his ax upon his shoulder which put him 
2 CONC in danger and made him resolved to avoid the next but he could not. When 
2 CONC he came a little below the meeting house there did appear a little thing 
2 CONC like a puppy of a darkish color. It shot between his legs forwards and 
2 CONC backwards as one that were distract the hay, and KIMBALL being free from 
2 CONC all fear used all possible endeavors to cut it with his ax but could not 
2 CONC hurt it, and as he was thus belaboring with his ax the puppy gave a 
2 CONC little jump from him and seemed to go into the ground. In a little 
2 CONC further going there did appear a black puppy somewhat bigger than the 
2 CONC first, but as black as a coal, which came against him with such violence 
2 CONC as its quick motions did exceed his motions of his ax. Do what he could, 
2 CONC it flew at his belly and away and then at his throat and over his 
2 CONC shoulder one way, and go off and up at it again another way and with such 
2 CONC quickness seized and violence did it assault him as it it would tear out 
2 CONC his throat or his belly. Whe he being without fear, but at least he felt 
2 CONC his heart to fail and sink under it that he thought his life was going 
2 CONC out, and he recovered himself and gave a start up and ran to the fence, 
2 CONC calling upon God and naming the name of Jesus Christ. Then it invisibly 
2 CONC away. He made it not known to anybody for fretting his wife. The next day 
2 CONC Edmond ELLIOT said that he was going toward the house of MARTIN to look 
2 CONC his oxen, went in to light his pipe and MARTIN's wife asked him where 
2 CONC KIMBALL was. ELLIOT said abed with his wife for aught he knew. She said 
2 CONC they say he frightened last night with what ELLIOT she said with puppies. 
2 CONC ELLIOT replied that he heard nothing of it and asked where she heard of 
2 CONC it, and she said about the town which story said ELLIOT having told it 
2 CONC was all the town over when this deponent came home at night, for he had 
2 CONC been all day alone in the woods at work at his frame work.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 16 May: William BROWN made oath that his deposition given 11 
2 CONC May was a true relation according to his wife's complaint. He testified 
2 CONC that she yet remained a miserable creature, and Robert PIKE signed 
2 CONC himself as one witness.
2 CONT (1) 1692, 20 May: Examined by the court for witchcraft. One charge 
2 CONC against her was that she went from Amesbury to Newbury afoot, in a "dirty 
2 CONC season," without getting her clothing wet. Described as "a short, active 
2 CONC woman, wearing a hood and scarf, plump and well developed in her figure, 
2 CONC of remarkable personal neatness;" one who "scorned to be drabbled;" "a 
2 CONC strong minded woman, as her examination shows."
2 CONT (2) 1692, 2 Jun: She underwent the indignity of a physical examination, 
2 CONC intended to discover whether she had any physical abnormalities, 
2 CONC especially anything that could be used to suckle a familiar or even the 
2 CONC devil himself. She was examined twice during the same day. At neither 
2 CONC examination was any abnormality discovered, but at the first her breasts 
2 CONC appeared to be full at at the second slack.
2 CONT (2) 1692, 7 Jun: Lt. John ALLEN of Salisbury, aged 45 years, deposed that 
2 CONC in or about the year ___ he was hauling timber for Mr. George CARR for 
2 CONC building a vessel at Amesbury at Mr. GOODWIN's building place and having 
2 CONC done and bout to go home, Susanna MARTIN the wife of George MARTIN 
2 CONC desired him to cart staves for them, which he refused to do because of 
2 CONC his oxen which were weak and need now to get flesh. She seemed to be 
2 CONC discontent, and James FREEZE and others then present told him that she 
2 CONC said he had been as good as he had, for his oxen should never do him much 
2 CONC more service. ALLEN said, dost threaten me thouold witch or words to that 
2 CONC effect, resolving to throw her into a brook that was fast by, which to 
2 CONC avoid she flew over the bridge and so escaped. But as he was going home 
2 CONC one of his oxen tired that he was forced to unyoke him to get him home. 
2 CONC After they were come home, put the oxen to Sailsbury Beach where several 
2 CONC other oxen and cattle usually are put where they had long range of meadow 
2 CONC to feed on and where cattle did use to get flesh, but in a few days all 
2 CONC the oxen upon the beach we found by their tracks were gone to the mouth 
2 CONC of the River Merrimack but not returned from whence we thought they were 
2 CONC run into the river. The next day sending to Plum Island found their 
2 CONC tracks there to be come ashore, which tracks they followed to the other 
2 CONC end of the island and a considerable way back again, and then sat 
2 CONC down,which being apprised by those that sought them they did use all 
2 CONC Imaginable Gentleness to them to some acquaintance which some of them 
2 CONC seemed to attend. All of a sudden away they all ran with such violence as 
2 CONC if they their motionhad been diobolical till they came near the mouth of 
2 CONC Merrimack River, and then one of them came back again with such swiftness 
2 CONC as was amazing to the beholders who stood ready to __ him and help his 
2 CONC tired carcass up, but letting him loose away he ran up into the Island 
2 CONC and from there through the marshes up into Newbury town and so up into 
2 CONC their woods and there was after a while found about Hartechok river over 
2 CONC against Amesbury. So that of 14 good oxen only that was saved, the rest 
2 CONC were all cast up some at Cape Ann, some in one place and some in other of 
2 CONC they only had their hides. He abserved James FREEZE did often mover the 
2 CONC prosecuting of Susanna MARTIN in the case being confident that she was a 
2 CONC witch.
2 CONT (1,2,3) 1692, 29 Jun: (1) Tried for witchcraft at Salem, MA. Found 
2 CONC guilty. (2) Susannah pleaded not guilty, but in the end she was found 
2 CONC guilty and condemned to death. (3) Susanna MARTIN, pleading Not Guilty to 
2 CONC the Indictment of Witchcraft brought in against her, there were produced 
2 CONC the evidences of many persons very sensibly and grievously bewitched; who 
2 CONC all complaned of the prisoner at the Bar, as the person whom they 
2 CONC believed the cause of their miseries. And now, as well as in the other 
2 CONC Trials, there was an extraordinary endeavour by Witchcrafts, with Cruel 
2 CONC and Frequent Fits, to hinder the poor sufferers from giving in their 
2 CONC complaints; which the Court was forced with much patience to obtain, by 
2 CONC much waiting and watching for it. [NOTE: Souce 3 gives transcripts of

2 CONC Joseph KNIGHT, aged about 40 years, testified that on the 20th day of 
2 CONC October or thereabouts in the year of our Lord 1686 Nathaniel CLARK 
2 CONC Junior of Newbury together with himself going out into the woods together 
2 CONC to fetch up horses there met with Susanna MARTIN of Amesbury with a 
2 CONC little dog running by her side. In his sight she took up the dog under 
2 CONC her arm, but coming up near to her she had a keg or a half firkin under 
2 CONC the same arm. KNIGHT then looked her in the face and told her that that 
2 CONC keg was a little dog, but now Nathaniel CLARK said so it was. Passing 
2 CONC from her they found their horses and brought them to a small causeway but 
2 CONC could not get them over, but there being a small knoll of land near their 
2 CONC horses ran round about it the greatest part of that day, they often 
2 CONC bringing them up to the causeway. Then they turned to that knoll and ran 
2 CONC about it the same way, but at length there came a young man with a yoke 
2 CONC of oxen to go over the causeway who with some difficulty got them over 
2 CONC for although the causeway was very good yet one of the oxen hung back as 
2 CONC though he were frightened, but at length was forced over and then we got 
2 CONC over with our horses. Elizabeth CLARK who was then the wife of Nathaniel 
2 CONC CLARK testified that her husband came home and told her the matter 
2 CONC mentioned in Joseph KNIGHT's testimony and related to her the whole of 
2 CONC the matter and all the circumstances related in the testimony excepting 
2 CONC that he told Joseph KNIGHT that the keg under Goodwife MARTIN's arm was 
2 CONC or had been a dog. She further testified that Goodwife MARTIN came to 
2 CONC their house the same day mentioned in Joseph KNIGHT's testimony before 
2 CONC her husband came home, and coming into the house, their dog bit her by 
2 CONC the leg, as she said whereupon she being angry said that he was a churl 
2 CONC like his master.
2 CONT (2) 1602, 30 Jun: Robert DOWNER of Salisbury, aged 52 years, testified 
2 CONC that several years ago Susanna MARTIN the then wife of George MARTIN, 
2 CONC being brought to court for a witch, the said DOWNER having some words 
2 CONC with her, she at the time attending Mrs. LIGHT at Salisbury. He among 
2 CONC other things told her he believed that she was a witch by what was said 
2 CONC or witnessed against her at which she seemed not well affected, said that 
2 CONC a she devil would fetch him away shortly, at which DOWNER was not much 
2 CONC moved, but at night as he lay in his bed in his own house alone there 
2 CONC came at his window the likeness of a cat and by and by come up to his bed 
2 CONC took fast hold of his throat and lay hard upon him a considerable while, 
2 CONC and was like to throttle him. At length he minded what Susanna MARTIN had 
2 CONC threatened him with the day before. He strove what he could and said 
2 CONC avoid thou she devil in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy 
2 CONC Ghost and then it let him go and slumped down upon the floor and went out 
2 CONC at window again. Mrs. Mary ANDREWS aged 40 years testified that she did 
2 CONC hear Susanna MARTIN threaten or tell Robert DOWNER that a she devil would 
2 CONC fetch him away shortly. She further said that from some of her father's 
2 CONC family she did hear that what Susanna MARTIN told them how DOWNER was 
2 CONC served that night what he was afflicted as abovesaid. Moses PIKE aged 26 
2 CONC years or more testified that he did hear Susanna MARTIN tell how Robert 
2 CONC DOWNER was handled and as he remembers it was the next day after it was 
2 CONC done at night. An undated deposition of Tho. PUTNAM, aged 40 years and __ 
2 CONC aged 38 years testified that they had been conversant with the afflicted 
2 CONC persons or most of them, namely Mary WALCOTT, Mercy LEWIS, Eliz. HUBBARD, 
2 CONC Abigail WILLIAMS and Sarah VIBBER, Ann PUTNAM Jun. and had often heard 
2 CONC the aforementioned persons complain of Susanna MARTIN of Amesbury 
2 CONC torturing them. They have seen the marks of several bites and pinch which 
2 CONC they said Susanna MARTIN did hurt them. On the 2 day of May 1692 being 
2 CONC the day of the examination of Susanna MARTIN the forenamed persons were 
2 CONC most grievously tortured during the time of her examination for upon the 
2 CONC glance of her eyes they were stricken down or almost choke and upon the 
2 CONC motion of her finger we took notice they were afflicted, and if she did 
2 CONC but clench her hands or hold her head aside the afflicted persons 
2 CONC aforementioned were most grievously tortured in like manner several 
2 CONC times. Sam PARRIS aged about 39 years and Nathaniel INGERSOLL aged about 
2 CONC 58 years and also Tho. PUTNAM aged about 40 years all of Salem testified 
2 CONC that Abigail WILLIAMS, Mercy LEWIS, Mary WALCOTT, Susanna SHELDON, and 
2 CONC John INDIAN were much afflicted at the examination of Susanna MARTIN of 
2 CONC Amesbury, Widow, before the honored Magistrates the 2 May 1692, and that 
2 CONC Goody VIBBER, who before had not accused her, and some others of the 
2 CONC afflicted, then and there testified that there was a black man whispering 
2 CONC in her ear and also that the said VIBBER, Abigail WILLIAMS and Mary 
2 CONC WALCOTT and John INDIAN could not come near MARTIN, whereupon in all they 
2 CONC were ordered by the magistrates to attempt it and their agonies and 
2 CONC tortures they charged said MARTIN as the cause of and also they further 
2 CONC saw that when MARTIN bit her lips they were bitten and whem the afflicted 
2 CONC were ordered to go towards her they were knocked down. Abigail WILLIAMS 
2 CONC testified that she had several times seen and been afflicted by the 
2 CONC apparition of Susanna MARTIN, Amesbury, widow, at and before 2 May 1692. 
2 CONC Ann PUTNAM Junr. testified taht some time in April 1692 there appeared to 
2 CONC her the apparition of an old short woman that told her her name was 
2 CONC MARTIN and that she came from Amesbury who did immediately afflict her, 
2 CONC urging her to write in her book, but on 2 May 1692 being the day of her 
2 CONC examination Susanna MARTIN did most grievously afflict her during the 
2 CONC time of her examination for when she did but look personally upon she 
2 CONC would strike her down or almost choke and several times since the 
2 CONC apparition of Susanna MARTIN has most grievously afflicted her by 
2 CONC pinching her and almost choking me, urging her vehemently to write in her 
2 CONC book. Also on the day of her examination she saw the apparition of 
2 CONC Susanna MARTIN go and afflict the bodies of Mary WALCOTT, Mercy LEWIS, 
2 CONC Elizabeth HUBBARD and Abigail WILLIAMS. Elizabeth HUBBARD aged about 17 
2 CONC years testified that she had often seen the apparition of Susanna MARTIN 
2 CONC among the witches, but she did not hurt her until 2 May during the day of 
2 CONC her examination, but then she did afflict her most grievously, for if she 
2 CONC did but look personally upon her she would strike her down or almost 
2 CONC choke her, and several times since the apparition of Susanna MARTIN had 
2 CONC most grievously afflicted her. Also on the day of her examination she saw 
2 CONC the apparition of Susanna MARTIN go and afflict and almost choke Mary 
2 CONC WALCOTT, Mercy LEWIS, Abigail WILLIAMS and Ann PUTNAM Junr. Mercy LEWIS 
2 CONC aged about 19 years testified that in the latter end of April 1692 there 
2 CONC appeared to her the apparition of a short old woman which told her her 
2 CONC name was Goody MARTIN and that she came from Amesbury, who did grievously 
2 CONC torment her by biting and pinching her, urging her vehemently to write in 
2 CONC her book. On 2 May 1692 being the day of her examination, Susanna MARTIN 
2 CONC did torment and afflict her most grievously, etc. [NOTE: Her testimony 
2 CONC was the same as that of the other girls.] Sarah VIBBER aged about 36 
2 CONC years testified that on 2 May 1692 the apparition of Susanna MARTIN of 
2 CONC Amesbury did most grievously torment her, etc., and that she believed 
2 CONC MARTIN was a witch and that she was bewitched by her. John ATKINSON aged 
2 CONC 56 or thereabouts testified that some time about five years since, one of 
2 CONC the sons of Susanna MARTIN Senr. of Amesbury exchanged a cow of his with 
2 CONC him for a cow which he had bought of Mr. WELLS the minister, which cow he 
2 CONC took from Mr. WELLS his house. Anout a week after he went to the house of 
2 CONC Susanna MARTIN to receive the cow from her son. When he came to bring the 
2 CONC cow home notwithstanding hamstringing of her and halting her she was so 
2 CONC mad that they could scarce get her along, but she broke all ropes 
2 CONC fastened to her. They put the halter two or three times round a tree 
2 CONC which she broke, and ran away, and when she came down to the Ferry we 
2 CONC were forced to run up to our waists in water. She was so fierce but after 
2 CONC much ado we got her into the boat, she was so tame as any creature 
2 CONC whatsoever. Susanna MARTIN muttered and was unwilling he should have the 
2 CONC cow. Sarah ATKINSON aged 48 years or thereabouts testified that some time 
2 CONC in the spring of the year about 18 years since, Susanna MARTIN came to 
2 CONC their house at Newbury from Amesbury in an extraordinary dirty season 
2 CONC when it was not fit for any person to travel. She then came on foot. When 
2 CONC she came into their house, she asked her whether she came from Amesbury a 
2 CONC foot, she said she did. She asked her how she could come in this time a 
2 CONC foot and bid her children make way for her to come to the fire to dry 
2 CONC herself. "She replied she was as dry as I was and turned her coats on 
2 CONC side, and I could not perceive that the sole of her shoes were wet. I was 
2 CONC startled at it that she should come so dry and told her that I should 
2 CONC have been wet up to my knees if I should have come so far on foot. She 
2 CONC replied that she scorned to have a drabbled tail."
2 CONT (2) 1692, 19 Jul: On Tuesday, Susanna MARTIN, Sarah GOOD, Rebecca NURSE, 
2 CONC Sarah WILDE and Elizabeth HOWE were taken from their cells, put into a 
2 CONC cart and driven up the rocky road to Gallows Hill.
2 CONT (2) Descriptions of her say she was short, slightly plump, active, and 
2 CONC "of remarkable personal neatness." She was also said to be very 
2 CONC outspoken, contemptuous of authority, and defiant in the face of slander 
2 CONC which had followed her for years. The Rev. Cotton MATHER said of her, 
2 CONC "This woman was one of the most impudent, scurrilous, wicked creatures of 
2 CONC this world; and she did now throughout her whole trial discover herself 
2 CONC to be such a one. Yet when she was asked what she had to say for herself, 
2 CONC her chief plea was that she had led a most virtuous and holy life." Mr. 
2 CONC MERRILL, in his "History of Amesbury," said, "The idea of snatching this 
2 CONC hardworking, honest woman from her home to be tried for her life by those 
2 CONC who never knew her, and witnesses who were prejudiced against her... is 
2 CONC almost too much for belief... Allowed no counsel, she was her own lawyer, 
2 CONC and her answers are remarkable for independence and clearness. She showed 
2 CONC herself to be a woman of more than ordinary talent and resolution."
