| On July 3, 1999, during a ceremonial event at sea sponsored by the Homeward Bound Foundation, a monument honoring the millions of men, women, and children who lost their lives en route to and at the hands slavery between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries will be lowered into the Atlantic Ocean's Middle Passage, perhaps never to be seen again. Six replicas of the monument, designed by Texas artist Eddie Dixon, will be placed on land in Africa, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, North America, and South America. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Based in Washington, DC, the Homeward Bound Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting African culture, history, politics, economics, and society. Another of the foundation's goals is to foster collective healing from the ravages of the transatlantic slave trade and its aftermath of racism. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| The ships depart Manhattan June 26, 1999 for the monument site. A number of related events are scheduled to take place in New York City between June 19th and June 25, including a reception at Harlem's Schomburg Center on Monday, June 21 and free concerts at South Street Seaport on Friday, June 25. | ||||||||||||||||||||
