Pier 3 at the
Locust Point Marine Terminal was built in the 1920s. In the early
1960s, we were retained to design the rehabilitation and expansion
of the existing pier and transit shed.
Features included
a 200-foot extension of the pier, widening of the existing pier,
and a 33,000 square foot addition to the transit shed. The resulting
pier included a transit shed encompassing 189,000 square feet (4.3
acres) with administrative offices and elevators. The pier also
provides ship loading facilities and trucking and rail connections.
The existing fire protection system was renovated and expanded,
and a new sewerage system installed to convey wastewater to the
Baltimore City sewerage system. Prior to this reconstruction, wastewater
from the pier was discharged into the harbor, as was the case with
many facilities in the area at the time.
