Until
the construction of MD 702, the only road serving traffic into
and out of the Back River Neck Peninsula was Back River Neck Road,
a 5-lane undivided roadway with numerous driveways, entrances,
and intersections. As development continued, Back River Neck Road
became extremely congested, with numerous accidents.
We
designed MD 702, a new 2.2 mile long 4-lane divided roadway that
generally parallels Back River Neck Road. Access is provided only
at intersections. Impacts to the adjacent communities were a major
concern during the planning and design phases. In order to minimize
these impacts, approximately 10,000 linear feet of noise barriers
were constructed, as well as a pedestrian bridge over MD 702.
