WHAT IS AN ISP?

ISPs are organizations that provide
consumers and businesses with access to the Internet. Internet Service Providers purchase bandwidth from NSPs that have direct links to the Internet and then in turn sell that bandwidth in smaller pieces. Typical access services range from dial-up modem, DSL and ISDN all the way up to private line connectivity (T3, T1, fractional T1, etc.).

NEW! New Year's resolutions for the ISP Market
cowsays.gif (2222 bytes) Consolidation is a Joke!

When there were only 2000 ISPs

"a major shake-out over the next few years resulting in about 200 ISPs by 2000" - April 9,  1996

over 3200 ISPs
"Internet service providers are consolidating fast, and most industry players expect the trend to continue until the field has been narrowed to a handful of players." - November 11, 1997

up to 6000+ ISPs
"ISP consolidation is well under way, and is expected to continue until the field narrows to a handful of players. Once dominated by small "mom-and-pop" ISPs, those players are now overshadowed by large regional players." - February 26, 1999

Today there are more than 8000 ISPs...

Because it may have been confusing to some industry analysts we have included the definition of consolidation:
con·sol·i·da·tion
(kn-sl-dshn)
n. - The merger of two or more commercial interests or corporations.
