The grad package supports painting complex color gradients (flood-fills) in Java 1.1 and Java 2. The basic concepts are listed below. For more information, consult the API documentation for the various classes.

• Every gradient spans an abstract range from 0.0 to 1.0.
• A gradient is composed of one or more segments. Each segment has a start value and an end value, and a start color and an end color.
• You construct a gradient first, and then use its paint() method to fill a Shape with the gradient.
• When you paint a gradient, you must supply a mode. The mode specifies how the gradient is to be drawn.
