How to Build Your Own Pirate Radio Station

Explicit Lyrics Warning letter, April 1990

Supplies You Will Need

• Veronica 1 watt PLL transmitter
• 40 watt RF Amp (to boost your FM signal)
• Limiter
• Meter
• Filter
• RG8 50 ohm low loss coax (about 50 feet with connectors)
• Some tuning tools (can be purchased at Radio Shack)

Purchase a good filter to help alter station sounds that might tip off a visit from the Feds. The height of an antenna will add lots of watts so Comet is strongly recommended. The location of the antenna will determine the strength/distance of the radio signal.

Depending upon your needs the studio portion is up to you. The basic pirate DJ set-up is two turntables, a mixer, a mic, and a tape deck (or two). If all you have is one deck, don't sweat it. Everything will still function. Whatever you've decided it is recommended to bridge your music source to the transmitter with a compressor on the output of your audio. This helps stop over-modulation which contributes to the signal slatter to adjacent frequencies.

Although these directions may sound overwhelming, it really isn't too difficult to put together. For more information on buying any of these components over the Internet, or for further information visit any of these websites:
