Places to VisitBailey-Matthews Shell Museum - 3075 San-Cap Road. Sanibel Island. The Shell Museum is the only one of its kind in the United States. Exhibits are devoted to shells in art and history, shell habitats, rare specimens, fossil shells and local Sanibel-Captiva shells.Beaches - Too many to describe. The individual names won't mean much to you. Drive down to the bridge or visit Fort Meyers Beach. Be sure to check out Sun Spash Family Waterpark at Santa Barbara Boulevard, the kids won't want to leave. Deep Sea Fishing - Charter a boat. Lots of large and small boats, catamarans and yachts are available. You drive or escorted. Most boats are located under the Sky bridge (it leads to Fort Meyers Beach). J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge - Wildlife Drive, Sanibel Island This 6,000-acre wildlife refuge is home to numerous native birds, raccoons, otter, alligator and other wildlife. It features delightful footpaths, winding canoe trails and five-mile scenic drive, all of which are lush with seagrape, wax and salt myrtles, red mangrove, cabbage or sabal palms and other native plant varieties. Information: (941)472-1100 Edison-Ford Complex - Edison bought 14 acres in Fort Meyers in 1886. In 1896 he met Henry Ford. During the winters Ford would visit Edison and their friendship would grow. In 1916 Ford purchsed the property next door to Edison. Visit the homes and laboratories of these remarkable inventors. Information: 941.334-3614 Everglades Day Safari - An Everglades ecotour of bird watching and wildlife photography of alligators, panthers, manatees, reptiles and other zoological and botanical interests in southwest Florida's Big Cypress preserve and Everglades outback. A full day of nature by riverboat, hiking, airboats and van exploration with highly trained guides. Fleamasters Fleamarket - Hundreds and hundreds of shops selling at fleamarket prices. 300,000 square feet, 800 booths under one roof. Clean restrooms. Florida's noveltys, antiques, jewelry and more. Information: 813.334.7001 Munich in Cape Coral - Oktoberfest at the German-American Social Club is two incomparable weekends of the real thing; German music, great food, beer, song, and games yield fun for the entire family, young and old. Information: 941.283.1400 The Old Schoolhouse Theatre(90 seats) and the Pirate Playhouse(180 seats) - Almost across from each other on Periwinkle Way on Sanibel Island. Featuring excellent live musicals and other productions with 1st class casts, often of Broadway caliber. 941.472.6862 and 941.472.006 respectively for reservations or information. Sanibel Factory Stores - Shop like crazy, save like mad! Simply the best. Bargains from factories like OshKosh B'Gosh, Reebok, Samsonite, Faberware, etc. Actually in Fort Myers at the intersection of Summerlin & McGregor Roads at the foot of the Sanibel bridge. Sanibel Historical Village & Museum - A landmark on the island featuring 5 buildings including the 1916 post office, a 1926 Model T delivery truck, the Rutland house and the Old Bailey store which dates back to 1899. Go back in time. Sun Harvest Market - Visit a real citrus grove. Get a behind-the-scenes look at a family run orchard. Visit their juice room where they put the squeeze on truckloads of fresh fruit.
