The Olney Sting had an outstanding performance at the inaugural August Cup Soccer Tournament held at the Maryland Soccerplex on August 23/24, sponsored by the Damascus Soccer Club and the Seneca Soccer Association. With a large field of sixteen U10 Boys teams competing, the Sting won their age division and left with the game ball. On the first day of the tournament they had two tough games, the first against Blue Magic Lightning (winning 4 - 1) and the second against Virginia Independent Blackhawks (again winning 4 - 1). Day two resulted in a victory over the Damascus Soccer Club Boca Jr, with the final score 3 - 0. The championship game saw Sting finishing with a 5 - 1 victory against the Arundel SA Kixx. Congratulations to all team players and coaches who participated. In the photo (click on it to enlarge), starting at the bottom left, are Conor Jordan, Connor Maio, Jamie Merriam, Jack Butler, and Robert Strand. Top row players are Braeden Kelly, Mitchell Muise, and Daniel Shorts. Coaches are Dave Butler and Erich Muise. (Return to the top of this page.)
The Olney United U15 boys team is travelling to Sweden during July to participate in Gothia Cup 2003. The Gothia Cup, which bills itself as "the World Youth Cup," annually includes hundreds of teams from more than 60 different countries. The tournament features an opening ceremony that previous participants have compared to an Olympic ceremony, with a parade of nations and over 40,000 spectators.
Hosted by professional soccer club BK Hacken, and supported by the city of Gothenburg, the tournament kicks off on July 13th with the opening ceremony, then each team participates in group play. Olney United will play U16 teams from England, Denmark, and Sweden in the opening round. We’ll be playing in the U16 bracket because most other countries use the calendar year to determine their age groups, rather than using August 1st as their cut-off date. Group winners and runners-up qualify for an "A" group play-off, while the 3rd place team qualifies for the "B" group play-off. Teams in these two brackets have the opportunity to continue tournament play through July 18th. Teams knocked out of the tournament after the qualifiying round play friendlies with other Gothia Cup participants. Rumor has it that the friendlies are every bit as challenging as the group play.
Olney's U15 United is made up of players from Montgomery and Howard counties, representing nine different local high schools, with several of them playing for their high school varsity teams as freshmen. United is coached by Dennis King, former Maryland ODP and semi-professional player, and former junior varsity coach at Magruder High School. We’re hoping to continue recent tournament successes by doing well at the Gothia Cup. Check out the Gothia Cup website, www.gothiacup.se to track our progress.
Our trip wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Olney Soccer Club, the local business community, and friends and family. Thanks for your help!
Olney United 4 - Skibby, IK 1
Olney dominated the Danish team from start to finish. AJ Barnold started the scoring on a nice assist from Darren Hulem. Ian Beliczsky tallied two more goals in the first half on assists from Taylor Depauw and Jeffrey Sandusky. Olney's only breakdown resulted in the Danish goal shortly before halftime. Olney continued the attack in the second half with Ian Belicsky getting his third goal on an assist from ritchie Booth.
Mark Eisinger led the defense and Ryan Hock had six saves in goal. (Return to the top of this page.)
Today (7/15/03) The U15 United played Brunswick FC from London, England. They had lost their first game and came out very aggressive. United's defense had some trouble with Brunswick's speed of play and clearing the ball to the midfield. The result was two goals for the Brits and that is how the first half ended. Ryan Hock had five saves.
Play the second half was fairly balanced. United struggled to build any offense while Brunswick sat back and just cleared the ball up field. With six minutes left, Jeffrey Sandusky broke free on the left side with a deflected pass and sped into the box. The Brunswick keeper came charging out cleats up and took Jeff down in the box. After checking to see if the keeper was alright, Jeff ignored several verbal assaults from the Brunswick players and calmly placed the PK in the lower right corner of the net. Trailing 2 - 1, United mounted a furious attack with shots from Ian Belicsky and Darren Hulem but the final whistle blew giving England the match. tomorrow united will play Sweden. (Return to the top of this page.)
The win advanced United to the quarterfinals where they played a team
from Norway. United lost 1 - 0 to end their tournament. Norway placed
a shot from about 35 yards out midway through the first half and
withstood a late rush by United to advance. Friday they will play a
friendly with a team from Scotland then spent the rest of the time
sightseeing.

The Olney Panthers continues their remarkable run in Futsal, finishing second in the Region 1 tournament President's Day weekend in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. The U17 Panthers, playing teams two years older at U19 lost in the finals to the Massachusetts State Champion Columbia Dragons 4-2. In a hard fought contest the Panthers came up short despite goals from David Hermann and Brandt Youmans, and several excellent saves in goal by Youmans.
Olney entered the tournament as the Maryland State U19 Futsal Champions in their first-ever tournament competition with new coach Scott Alexander at the helm. The tournament started out with an impressive 6-4 win against the Wolverines, Pennsylvania Finalists. Behind 4-0 late in the second half, Olney rallied for six unanswered goals to win the contest. Greg McKay scored three goals, Hermann two and Youmans one. Tinisi Paelay, Richard Kollar and Matt O'Connell led the defense and created several scoring opportunities. The second game, against eventual Champions Columbia Dragons, was an equally exciting affair. Behind 4-2 late in the second half, the Panthers scored two times to tie the contest. McKay scored twice while Hermann scored once and Mark Camardese scored the tying goal with less than one minute to play. Vinnie Testa, Scott Frumkin, Hector Porras and Boone Prentice played excellent defense. The third game was won 3-0 when the Culpepper Comets forfeited.
In the semi-finals Olney was matched up against defending US National Futsal Champion Juventus. The Panthers quickly took control of the game behind two goals from Kollar and one each from Hermann and Testa. Youmans was superb once again in goal, stopping several pint blank shots.
With their second place finish in Region 1, the Panthers move on to
the US National Futsal Championship held in Anaheim, July 18-20, 2003. Futsal
is an indoor version of soccer where skill is paramount and fouls are
tightly called. Teams consist of four fierld players and a goalie, and
substitutions are made on the run as in hockey.

Playing in the White Division of the Columbus Day Tournament, United took both games. Due to rain, the Tournament was shortened to one day.
In the first game United avenged an earlier loss in League play to the Stafford Storm. Goals by Jeffrey Sandusky, Tim Poulin and Darren Hulem led to a 3-2 victory. The second game was played on a very sloppy field. United dominated possession and finally broke through on a goal by Ian Beliczky in the 70th minute to defeat the Kirkwood Pumas 1-0. Goalkeeper Ryan Hock had a couple of nice saves to preserve the shutout.
Defenders Mark Eisinger, David Kerich, Pat Bailey and David Waschak
played well in both games. Offensively, Pat Norfolk was a constant
threat up front all day. The midfield play of AJ Barnold, Mike Hassett,
Chase Engel, Richie Booth and David Hawk helped support the offense with
their tackling and passing skills.

The U-16 Olney Panthers won the Kirkwood Premier Boys Tournament last weekend, beating the Middletown Celtics (NJ) in the final 4-2. For the tournament, the Panthers went undeafted, scoring 13 goals while giving up only 2.
In the first game, Olney beat the NJ Dynamo behind a second half goal by Marc Crumpler and solid defense led by the goal tending tandem of Jordan Grossman and Brandt Youmans. Mark Camardese, Steve Wallace, Hector Porras, Richard Kollar, Keith Bortnick and Vinnie Testa held the Dynamo in check with smotheting defensive pressure.
In the second game, Olney exploded for a 4-0 win over Avalance '86 (PA). Andrew Barden led the offense with two goals while Joey Schimmel and Greg McKay added one each. Larry Chan, David Hermann and Boone Prentice helped McKay control the midfield. Olney's defense once again held on for a shut out, with Chris Sinclair playing strongly in the middle.
In the semi-final Olney beat Germania United (PA) 4-0 as Schimmel scored twice and Barden and Hermann scored once each. Chan, McKay, Hermann, Kollar, Matt O'Connell and Prentice created several dangerous scoring chances out of the midfield. Grossman and Youmans both played well in goal with strong support from Camardese, Wallace, Porras, Bortnick, Crumpler, and Sinclair on defense.

Late in the contest Middletown came back to make it 3-2 and was putting pressure on the Panthers until Schimmel scored his second to secure the 4-2 margin of victory. Once again, McKay, Chan, Prentice, Hermann, O'Connell and Sinclair dominated the midfield. Camardese, Wallace, Porras, Kollar, Testa and Bortnick played tight defense, and Barden, Crumpler and Schimmel put constant pressure on the Celtic defense. Grossman and Youmans secured the victory with several excellent saves.

Congratulations the following teams for their showing on the holiday weekend!

The Tornadoes started well with two convincing victories on Saturday, 5-2 over St. Mary's United Freedom and 4-1 over Calverton Kieuteur. Sunday again started well with a 2-1 victory over a quality team from New York SISC Tidal Waves. In the afternoon they faced Chantilly Electrics in the semi-final losing 2-1 in a nail-biting well-played game. This concluded a very enjoyable weekend for the Tornadoes leaving a lot to look forward to in the future.

The Olney Green Champions continued their championship tradition on June 2, 2002 by winning the Washington Area Girls Soccer (WAGS) Division 4 championship. The Green Champions, coached by David Claure, accomplished this goal by beating the Herndon Firecrackers 1-0 in a hard fought contest. The winning goal was scored by Melanie Thompson on a shot from 25 yards out.
After winning the Division 5 championship in their first WAGS season, the Green Champions finished in the middle of the pack in Division 4 last fall. However, the team dedicated itself to improving last winter and under the leadership of Coach Claure had one of their best seasons ever this spring. The team, which dominated Division 4 by scoring 17 goals while only allowing four, had a season record of seven wins, two ties, and no losses. The coach attributed the improvement to strong off season commitment and hard work by each member of the team. Although this is true, it is also clear that Coach Claure's leadership and drive to develop player skills led to the team's improvement this season.
The offense, led by Rachel Shuck, dominated the competition this season. Rachel, who plays left forward, was recognized by Coach Claure as the team's most valuable player. Rachael consistently put pressure on the defense and made plays. She was also the team's top scorer this season.
The offensive firepower included Mimi Hailu at striker, and Melanie Thompson at right forward. Mimi, one of the strongest dribblers on the team, amazed teammates with her ability to consistently win loose balls and beat defenders. Melanie, a strong and fast player, caused defensive match-up problems all season.
The midfield continued to be the strength of this team. Key players in the midfield rotation included Carmen Ceja, Margaret Lee, Jenny Claure, Meagan Farrel and Lauren Wessel. Carmen, who has the best foot skills on the team, drove the offense from her attacking midfield position. Margaret, who plays left midfield, is a smart player with an amazingly strong foot. Jenny, who has played all midfield positions, continued to show her excellent foot skills and passing ability. Meagan proved her value to the team with her strong skills, creativity, and ability to improvise on set plays. Lauren proved to be one of the most versatile players on the team, playing each of the midfield positions, sweeper and even goalie when the team needed her last fall.
When it came to stopping the opposing team's attack, the team turned to the rotation of Laura Peregoy and Katie Kerner. Sharing time at stopper this season, Coach Claure made the best use of Laura's and Katie's talents. The girls' play dominated the defensive midfield area this season, with Laura's speed, faking and turning ability, and Katie's strength in heading and passing. Regardless of who was playing, the other team had difficulty getting their offense going.
The defense, led by Mary Ashe at sweeper, shut down opposing teams and allowed only four goals all season. Mary, who plays aggressive and spirited defense, was injured during the season but returned to the line-up for the final game. Key players in the success of the team's defense this season include backs Lauren Wilson, Laura Repetto, Andrea Fernandez, and Shani Ben-Shlaush. Lauren, one of the fastest players in the league, consistently shut down the opposing team's top scorers. Laura Repetto, also a lightning quick player, was instrumental stopping scoring threats. One of the most improved players on the team is Andrea Fernandez, who worked hard over the winter. It showed during the season as she played consistently well in the defensive end of the field. Shani, another very good defender and midfielder, was injured during the season and missed the final four games. Shani was playing well prior to her injury and big things are expected of her in the fall when the team competes in Division 3. A great addition to the team this season has been Alex Martinez at goalie. Alex anchored the defense with her play all season, and allowed only four goals.
The team looks forward to the competition in Division 3 next fall. For Coach Claure, moving to Division 3 is just another challenge, and an opportunity to prove how good these girls can be.

Olney's boys U16 Panthers and U14 Rovers both advanced to the Maryland State Cup Semi-finals with victories in group play May 11th and 12th. The Panthers defeated SCB Rapids 2-0 in the knockout round and waltzed through group play with a perfect 3-0 record scoring 11 goals and conceding only 2. The Panthers defeated BFC Fusion 5-1, Baltimore Bombers 3-1 and GFC '86 Gunners 3-0 for 9 points. The other three teams in the group each had one win for 3 points.
The Rovers started cup competition with a 2-0 win over the Westminister Wolves in the knockout round. In group play Olney defeated MSC Strikers 4-0 and tied Severna Park Galaxy 1-1 which set up the final and deciding group game with Frederick Excel with each team having four points and being group co-leaders. The Rovers beat Excel 1-0 to advance.
Semi-final games will be played Saturday, June 1st at the polo Grounds.

It was a cold sunny spring afternoon as the Olney Premier started out their season in fine form. After an initial deflected goal from the Sterling Stampede, the Premier settled down into their style of play. Olney for most of the first half, dominated play but just could not execute the finish. In the second half, Vince Carter (center forward) took control of a bobbled ball inside the six yard line and put the ball pass their goal keeper, 1-1.
As the game progressed, Premier goalkeeper, Andrew McKee had to pull off some outstanding saves due to weakness in our center midfield. Mathew Wellen and Kevin Mongello (defenders) held a very strong defensive line; on many occasions releasing the ball directly to the forwards which created counter attacks on the break.
Well done to the Premier for their first game of the new season;
building a new style of play.

The Olney Pumas U13 Boys team took home championship trophies from this weekend's Prince William Soccer Icebreaker Tournament in Quantico, Virginia. The Pumas defense was stellar, pitching shut outs in all four games.
Game 1 set the stage as the Pumas defeated NCSL rival Team America 88, 3-0, on Erick DeSa's goal off a Kevin Abadi corner kick early in the second half followed quickly by two goals from Pat Young. Marcus Ranney, Christian Sand, and Marc Goldstein anchored the defense and goalkeeper Matt McElroy turned away 10 Team America shots. In game 2 against the North Stars, a team that traveled down from Pennsylvania, DeSa again opened the scoring nine minutes into the game. The defense continued its strong effort as Michael Abadi, Dan Ryder, and Teby Njuki kept the ball well away from the Puma net and then late in the half Teddy Smith added a goal to provide a cushion going into the break. Eight minutes into the second half Scott Phinith drove a head ball off yet another Kevin Abadi corner into the back of the North Stars net. Late in the game successive goals by Kiley off a deflected free kick, and Young unassisted provided the final score of 5-0.
Game 3 matched the Pumas against another NCSL rival, the Frederick Excel, in a game that saw both teams challenge repeatedly but to no avail. McElroy's brilliant save of an Excel breakaway in the first half and diving deflection of a shot to the far post in the second helped the Pumas keep their goals-against record unsullied as they played the Excel to a 0-0 tie - just enough to launch the Pumas to the championship game against the MCSA Hot Shots.
The Pumas tough defense continued to provide opportunities on the
offensive end as Jonathan Biava, Goldstein, and Phinnith controlled the
midfield, and nine minutes into the game the Pumas' Pavel Sukhobok
struck paydirt, sliding a DeSa pass beneath the diving Hot Shot goalie.
Jake Schoengold's aggressive play continually pestered the Hot Shot
defenders and resulted in Schoengold assisting Young's fourth tournament
goal at the twenty-minute mark. In the second half the Hot Shots came
alive and the Pumas were hard-pressed to keep their shut-out string
alive, but Ranney and Kiley repeatedly cleared the attacks and McElroy
stopped 10 Shot shots. When Young nailed his fifth and final goal,
assisted by Smith, late in the half he sealed the 3-0 victory and the
championship for the Pumas.

The Olney Green Champions (WAGS U15) participated in two tournaments. The 1st tournament was on March 16th and 17th (USSSA soccer tournament in Bowie, MD). They finished in 2nd place.
The Olney Green Champions (O.G.C.)also participated at the PWSI Icebreaker Soccer Tournament in Prince William County on March 23rd and 24th 2002. They finished in 1st place.
Once again the O.G.C. has done it: 3 wins, 1 tie, 14 goals favor, and 2 against.
The Olney Green Champions players have impressed many coaches and people with their excellent team work. The girls showed excellent soccer skills, there were many complements for the O.G.C. players from other coaches, especially for Carmen Ceja. Carmen was the MVP of the tournament. She has excellent passing, dribbling techniques and impressive free kicks. Coaches and parents were very impressed with Melanie Thompson and Rachel Shuck's speed. Rachel scored 5 of the most important goals for the team. In the defense, Lauren Wilson, Andrea Fernandez and Mary Ashe became like "The Great Wall of China," making it almost impossible to pass through the defense. Laura Peregoy and Katie Kerner together make the "perfect stopper."
The Olney Green Champions have worked very hard through the winter, guided by a great coach (David Claure). Their goal is to WIN the Championship in WAGS Division 4 and move up the division one more time. They are confident and they believe in themselves. The players and coach believe that "Hard Work Always Pays Off."
This Championship is dedicated to all the people who work hard for the Olney Soccer Club, especially for Bob Dengler and his tremendous dedication to the club.

After taking a beating in their first season in the NCSL in the fall of
2000, the Mustangs have bounced back in a very serious way. This past fall,
The Mustangs, who were now playing their first season at 11 v 11, handled
the transition to division 4 with poise and grace. They ended the fall 2001
season with a record of 6-2-1. This secured them a third place spot, and the
opportunity to move up to division 3. What an awesome accomplishment for a
team that started the season wanting to prove that they belonged in division
4. The team could not have done this without a superior game plan, and a
dedicated group of kids. The goal was played heroically by Stephen
Magliaro. The defense was as tough as nails, and was led by co-captain Mark
Eiseman at sweeper. Helping to keep the wall of defense strong were Henry
Kahwaty, Bruce Haase, and Joey Hankins. The midfield was dominated by the
men that we call our transition team, who were very smooth at transitioning
the ball from one end to the other. They are: Mik Berzins, Peter Martinez,
Johnny Hoover, John LaRocca, Brendan O'Connell, and Matt Permison. You must
put the ball in the net to win games, and our forwards could certainly do
that. They were led by co-captain Alex Grassi, Josh Rodriguez, and Ryan
Bernard. Not only are these kids great soccer players, but they are also
fine young men. Their coach, teammates, parents, and families are very

The Olney Tigers clinched first place in division 3 this weekend
defeating the Sterling Explosion 3-1 in Virginia this weekend. Jenny
Azarian scored the first goal in the 3rd minute with a rocket into the
back of the net after Jessica Tabacca sent a nice pass up the midfield.
The Tigers started the second half on fire with a 1-0 lead. Arliegh
Rose had the second goal with a beautiful header off a well placed
corner from Azarian. The Exposion came back and scored but then in the
final minutes Jessica Tabacca scored after an assist from Jeannie Gordan
to secure the win. Chelsea Prentice and Lizzie Kusbit kept the
Explosion goalie diving as both had close attempts on goal hitting the
post. Alison Eiseman, Louisa Jamgochian, Jessie Lutz, Julia McCarty,
Casey McDonald, and Karly O'brien all played exceptionally well along
with Ashley Myers, McKenna Smet, Samantha Kaufman and Masha Berge. Kira
Maker played very well allowing only one goal. Congratulations to all
the Olney Tigers for working hard and going undefeated this season.
Winning first place in division 3 should place the Tigers up to division
2 for the Spring season.

Later on that day the Onyx kicked off again at 5:20 p.m. Still miserable weather conditions, torrential rains, and freezing fans and players. Off Caroline Tuckhorn's left footed shot, Kelly Waskewicz followed the ball sliding into a huge muddy puddle creating a 1-0 lead. After a battling, goalkeeper Shea Kenealy, was still unscored on. The pressure was constant but defenders, Franny Eaton, Nicole Cabezas, and Lauren Goldberg all fought to keep the 1-0 score with Onyx winning, once again. Another shutout victory.
Bright and early Sunday morning the sun was out yet the wind and the cold front met the Olney players once again. This time the Onyx faced a first division beltway league travel team. Chrissy Fitzgerald repeatedly tried to get the ball to the right flank, yet no players on yellow were there. A little more than five minutes before half, off a long throw in from Ria Halkiotis, Brittany Gobish settled the ball and shot, hitting the left top corner of the goal. The Onyx were up. The whole Olney team was supporting each other with nice passes. Although Kelly Waskewicz was out with a minor knee injury, all players fought on, including her replacing mid-fielder Jessica Garber. Liz Shaffer and Erin Rudy fought to deliver the ball to Chrissy Fitzgerald. On Chrissy's first touch, she played the ball out into space taking on the goalie. The keeper committed and Chrissy cut the ball to the right past the diving goalie, placing the ball into the back of the net. The Onyx went wild. The opposing team got a lucky goal killing the Onyx's chance for a shutout. Still up, the Onyx defended their lead. The whistle blew and the Onyx ran off in excitement.
The final game began at 10:40 a.m. with the Onyx still undefeated.
Now they were up against a Virginia Beach travel team. Anxious to defend
their possible tournament victory, the Onyx played a wonderful passing
game. This was the strongest team the Onyx faced all weekend. Coach,
Neil Hull never had to yell, "get first to the ball" at all, all game.
Nicole Cabezas had a couple strong headers from the mid-field. Caroline
Tuckhorn and Casey Jones both got the ball out wide to deliver into the
forward line. Chrissy Fitzgerald got a breakaway off a clear from the
Onyx's sweeper, Franny Eaton. Chrissy ran the ball and shot just
outside the 18. The ball soared over the keeper's hands. The parents
and fans roared. 10 minutes before the end of the game, Ria Halkiotis
got the ball from Kathleen Murphy. Ria ran the ball down the left side
of the field and shot the ball before being taken down by the opposing
player. It tipped the keepers fingers but Brittany Gobish, boxing out
the goal, managed to follow the ball in. The Onyx up 2-0, defended
their lead again. The sound of the whistle brought instant joy and
relief to all players, fans, coaches, and parents. The tournament was
over, and the Olney Onyx walked away victoriously, with first place
trophies.

The Olney Rockets U-13 girls soccer team continued their winning ways, capturing the Red Division championship at this weekends Columbus Day Tournament in Virginia Beach. Coach Devin Payton's team rebounding after being relegated out of WAGS last Fall, took home their third title in eight months. The win was especially sweet for Payton, a college soccer star in the area while playing for Old Dominion University.
The Rockets faced the WAGS Division 4 leading, Arlington Avalanche in the opening game, earning a hard fought 1-1 tie on the strength of their sturdy defense and a goal that came courtesy of Marian Dvorak off a well crossed pass from Claire Leavengood-Boxer. Rockets goalkeeper, Cory Hawkins put together another set of spectacular games in the tournament allowing only one goal in four games. The Rockets then defeated the Colonial FC Blaze 1-0. The Rockets midfield lead by Yoshi Romero, Alexandra Dvorak, Julie Sampson, and Amy Sands executed an excellent passing attack which created numerous scoring opportunities resulting in narrowly missed goals. Finally late in the second half Lauren Newmyer took a well aimed pass from Zoya Aleem, deked around the last defender and put in the games only goal.
On Sunday the Rockets faced their toughest challenge of the tournament in a
very physical and determined Herndon Jaguars squad. The Rockets were all
that stood between the Jaguars with a 3-0 record and the winners trophy. The
Jaguars had the advantage in the first half but the Rockets defenders,
modest in size but exhibiting vast amounts of heart and lead by Stephanie
Matousek, Rebecca Vogel, Laura Kranish and team captain Barbara Carroll
played perhaps their best game ever in denying the Jaguars access to the
goal. Susan Socoloff playing everywhere but in the goal, divided her time
between chasing down opposing strikers, winning balls in the midfield and
taking the ball deep into the offensive end for the Rockets.
The Jaguars needing only a tie to win the title, nonetheless stepped up
their already aggressive style of play but the Rockets gaining confidence as
the contest wore on stunned the Jaguars when striker Megan Towe penetrated
the Jags defense and lofted a shot over the keeper for a 1-0 Rockets
advantage. Five minutes later Towe once again beat the defenders one on one
with some sharp cutbacks, kicking in a perfectly aimed shot into the far
right corner of the net. The 2-0 score stood and the Rockets had one match
left to try to secure the crown. Based on the complex scoring system used in
the tournament a victory was necessary and the tired but motivated Rockets
were not to be denied. Facing the Colonial Heights Lightning from
Williamsburg, Va., the Rockets behind a phenomenal three goal performance by
Marian Dvorak and more stifling defense under Barbara Carroll's direction,
cruised to the 3-0 victory. The exhausted but exhilarated Rockets headed
home not having seen the beach, but cherishing the memories.

Tornadoes Win Hagerstown Fall ShootoutThe Olney Tornadoes a U-10 Girls team, won the Hagerstown Soccer Club's Fall Shootout this past Columbus day Weekend. The tournament was sponsored by the Hagerstown Lions Club. The girls started off with a 0-0 tie against Severna Park. Their second game was a 4-2 win against the Laurel Wildcats. That put the Tornadoes in second place for their semi-final game on Sunday. They won their semifinal game against a tough team, the host team the Hagerstown Freedom. Score of that match was 3-2. The final game was Olney and Severna Park again, and this time the Tornadoes ame out on top by the score of 2-0. The team's record for the tournament was 3-0-1. |
The Olney Rockets girls soccer team won the championship in the U-13 Gold Division at the Olney Soccer Club's Washington Fall Classic. The Rockets opened the tournament with a 1-0 vicory over the Gettysburg Tornados on Saturday. The only score came via a well aimed 30 yard free kick by Barbara Carroll which was redirected by Marian Dvorak and netted by Lauren Newmyer. The Rockets strong defense anchored by Rockets captain, Barbara Carroll, Stephanie Matousek, Rebecca Vogel, and Laura Kranish held off the Tornados and played magnificently all weekend. Cory Hawkins playing in goal made several fingertip, diving saves to secure the victory. The Rockets finished the day with a scoreless tie with the Pennsylvania team. Susan Socoloff, Megan Towe, Zoya Aleem, and Alexandra Dvorak applied offensive pressure, but strong goalkeeping by the opponents prevented any tallies. On Sunday the Rockets scoring touch returned when they defeated a determined MSI Peregrines team 4-0. Claire Leavengood-Boxer led the Rockets with two goals and Marian Dvorak added another. Yoshi Romero, Amy Sands and Julie Sampson provided outstanding efforts in the defensive midfield and thwarted the Peregrines, who never quit.
This set up the championship match in the stadium, a rematch with the
Tornados who upset the previously unbeaten Calverton Strikers. Both teams
found it difficult to muster many good chances, with the defenses playing
tough. Then in the 15th minute, taking advantage of an open long range
shot, Lauren Newmyer blasted a soaring 25 yard score, hitting the back of
the net for a 1-0 Rockets advanatge. Five minutes later the Tornados hit the
equalizer for the only score against the Rockets in four games. The game
ended tied at 1-1 and two overtime periods were scoreless as well. This set
up a heart stopping penalty kick tiebreaker. Cory Hawkins made the best save
of the tiebreaker on the Tornados first shot diving to her right to stop a
sure score. After three kickers from each side were thwarted, Barbara Carroll
cooly stepped to the line and drilled her shot cleanly into the right
corner, giving the Rockets the advantage. Laura Kranish
then followed with the teams' second and decisive goal as Hawkins stopped
four of the five Tornados from scoring. The Rockets and coach Devin Payton
had earned their second tournament championship.

The Olney Rovers U-14 boys soccer team, lead by coach Pete Wood, won a
decisive final game against the Loudoun Arsenal team to finish in first
place in the Olney Soccer Club tournament over Labor Day weekend. The
tournament commenced with a 3:1 win over the Potomac Tsunami. The
following game, against the MSI Dolphins, resulted in a 4:0 win. The
second day of play resulted in a Rovers victory over the MSC Strikers,
3:1, advancing the Rovers to the championship game, which ended in a
winning score of 5:2 over the Loudoun Arsenal. Brilliant scoring by
Peter Young, Jeremy Ger, Juan Granados, Alex Power, Brandon Garton,
Chris Long, Michael Christian, and Dennis Schardt, resulted in 15 goals
for the Rovers. Superb assists by Dan Fry, Bryan Bowring, and Justin
Garton guided the team to victory, despite the absence of injured player
Jim Flood. Defensive attacks by Brett Ornstein, Matt Arrington, Sam
Pettee and goalkeeper Rob Bohus held the opposing teams to only 4 goals
throughout the tournament. Congratulations to the Rovers for another
successful tournament!

The Olney Rovers returned on August 1st from a successful whirlwind tour of Scotland Soccer Clubs. The Rovers took the Glasgow area teams by storm, ending the tour with a 4 win, 1 loss record. As reported previously, the Rovers won their first game against the Clyde Centre team, 2:1.
The next game played, on Friday, July 27, was held against the Park Moor Boys Club, and ended in a 5:1 win. The first period brought a penalty score from the Rovers' Justin Garton who also placed a second goal later in the game. The Park Moor team fought back with a goal from an indirect, but the Rovers were not giving in. Brilliant passing was provided by Christian Maurer, Dan Fry, and Paul Sinclair. The first period ended with a beautifully placed goal by Jeremy Ger, giving the Rovers a 3:1 lead at the end of the first 25 minutes of play. The second period was defensively successful, as two close goals were saved by Rob Bohus from an indirect and a very close corner attempt. The Rovers scored again with a goal by Chris Long, assisted by Steven Poloway.
The Rovers had a "rest from play" day on Saturday, to prepare for the most challenging competition to come over the next three days. They were privileged to attend the Livingston Football Team game, an historic game, as this was Livingston's first game in the Premiere League (professional league). That evening, the Rovers played scrimmages against each other in a gorgeous indoor facility, providing a lot of fun and silliness for both the players and their coaching staff.
After Sunday morning practice, rest, and church, Sunday's game against the Kilpatrick Boys Club was held at the Glasgow University field in the afternoon. What a gorgeous field it was! Coach Eric attended Kilpatrick school as a young chap, giving this game significant importance. The game began with a 0-0 tie at the end of the first period, despite sincere attempts at challenging the Kilpatrick defense by Brett Ornstein and Alex Power. The second period provided a goal from J. Garton, however, the score was tied with a big play by the Kilpatrick team. Third period, the Rovers found renewed energy, and goals were scored by Jim Flood, Juan Granados, and J. Garton. Kilpatrick returned with a chipped goal over the head of the Rovers' goalie, finalizing the score of 4:2, Rovers. Brilliant play was provided by the defensive team of Sam Pettee, Peter Young, and Brandon Garton. Following the game, both teams retreated to the club room at the University, where sandwiches, beverages, and desserts were provided to all and gifts were exchanged. Many of the boys were presented soccer jerseys by the members of the Kilpatrick team, which the Rovers' players wore with pride. The day ended with a trip to the Strathclyde Theme Park, where the boys enjoyed a few hours of amusements, including a penalty kick challenge with provided the team a HUGE Scooby Do, which would become the team's mascot for the remainder of the trip.
Monday, after the morning practice session, the team and chaperones were taken again to Glasgow, downtown, where sightseeing and a shopping spree for soccer jerseys and knick-knacks took place. The jerseys were a great price, and the Rovers will likely be the best dressed group of soccer players in Olney! After dinner at the University, the Rovers set out for their fourth game, against the Lenox Boys Club. The Rovers had been warned that this was a tough team, and most of the boys had been identified for semi-pro teams already. The Rovers, playing in the pouring rain, fought hard against the Lenox team. Great attempts at goal were made by many, however, the Lenox defense fought back, and allowed only one goal, which was placed by Rovers' forward Juan Granados. Awesome attempts at controlling the Lenox team were made by the mid-field team of Bowring, Long, Ger, Ornstein, Power and Fry, however, the Lenox team finished the game with a 5:1 win, giving the Rovers their first loss of the tour.
Following this game, the Rovers were treated to sandwiches, sodas, and snacks by the Lenox team, and awards and gifts were exchanged. Each Rover was presented with a beautiful tie, with the Lenox logo. The mom's accompanying the tour were presented with beautiful handkerchiefs, and the dad's with a pen. The boys mixed well together, and the Rovers' boys were impressed with the skill and determination of the Lenox players in their future goals of reaching the professional soccer level.
Tuesday, the Rovers' last full day in Glasgow, the players went through their usual training period in the morning, after having breakfast in the cafeteria. Their afternoon was filled with a tour of the Celtic's Stadium. After dinner at the University, the team was off to the Glasgow field for their final game. The boys were aware that this was also a team of players identified for semi-pro play, and were anxious to play their best game ever. Were the spectators in for a show!
The Stirling Albion Football Club arrived for warm-ups, and were impressive to watch. The players, beginning their traditional pre-game pageantry, were greeted by a Bag-piper playing a traditional Scottish song, who marched the players from both teams across the field to present the teams to each other. This was a highlight of the trip, which the players and spectators will remember forever. The game began with control of the field by the Stirling team. The Rovers' fought back hard, and brilliant passing and attempts at goal by the Rovers' offensive line (J. Garton, Long, Granados, Sinclair, Poloway, Flood and Maurer) were fruitless. The defensive line (Young, Pettee, B. Garton) played a superb game, keeping the Stirling team in their own end, and a breath-taking penalty save by keeper Bohus held the team to a 0:0 tie by the end of the game. The spectators were perfectly happy with a tie for this game, but the coaching teams decided to go for a shoot-out.
The Rovers' shoot-out squad of Young, J. Garton, Long, Bowring, and Pettee were prepared. The Stirling team placed a beautiful shot, which was tipped by the Rovers goalie, but went in. The Rovers fought back with a goal by Young. The next shot by the Stirling was again tipped by the Rovers goalie, but went in. A goal was scored for the Rovers by Long. The Stirling fought back with a mis-placed goal shot, which maintained the score at 2:2, with the Rovers' up for an attempt. Bowring placed a bullet shot to place the Rovers ahead one. The Stirling fought back with a goal placed in the upper 90's. The score was tied once again. A close shot by Garton continued the 3:3 tie. The fifth goal attempt kickers were lined up for the final plays of the game. Stirling shot first, with a hard shot toward the right, which was dramatically saved by goalie Bohus. The Rovers maintained the tie, and had one last shot to go. A beautifully placed shot was made by Pettee, to the right corner, giving the Rovers a 4:3 win over the Sterling team. A most exciting way to end a most exciting game! The Rovers retreated to the club house with the Sterling team, once again exchanging gifts and swapping stories.
Of course, upon returning to the dorm, no one was tired! The players were "pumped," and the parents were too! A brief ceremony was held by coaches Woody and Eric, and the boys played cards, chatted, and watched TV until their curfew of 11:00. A few of the boys were reported to have snuck in pizzas, but I won't tell.......
The Rovers team left Glasgow early afternoon on Wednesday, August 1st, returning to BWI on 6:30 p.m, with success under their belts, and happy memories to last them a lifetime. Once again, the Rovers would like to thank all from The Olney Soccer Club, who supported the Rovers in reaching their goals of touring Scotland, and who provided the players a great start to their 2001-2002 season.
Yes, there is sunshine here, Thursday, July 26, 2001 in Edinburgh, Scotland. The Rovers are having a brilliant trip to this beautiful land of green. Weather has been terrific, except for a bit of rain yesterday, but all in all we couldn't ask for any better.
We arrived, on schedule, on Tuesday morning, after a 1-1/2 hour stop in Iceland at 2 a.m. est. What an interesting place!
Upon arrival in Glasgow, and after locating lost wallets and backpacks (these boys don't change that much in one day!) we were wisked away on a luxury bus to our home for the next week at Glasgow University. We are staying in the dorms, each player and parent has their own room with private bath.
After unpacking and a quick introduction to the University and a review of our itinerary, the Rovers were off to a training session for two hours with "Woody" and "Eric" the coaches for the week. The boys got a terrific workout, considering it was 6 a.m. est, and most of us got no sleep on the flight. The University is hosting several other teams at this time, including a semipro team who is here for pre-season training. The boys have had the opportunity to watch these fabulous players train, and have learned the discipline needed to get that far. They are even eating fruit instead of junk in the cafeteria, thanks to the examples being set by the older guys.
Dinner was served in the cafeteria (which, by the way, offers fabulous food and LOTS of it!) and the boys retreated to an orientation class and video viewing. We understand most of them were asleep by the end of the video. Lights out at 10:00 - no exceptions. Mostly everyone was asleep by 8:30.
Wednesday turned out to be a wonderful day. The boys were up for breakfast at 8:00 (blood pudding, anyone?) and off to a two hour practice with Woody. The breakfasts here put IHOP to shame! After showers, we were off to Loch Lomond for a cruise on a 125 passenger boat. We rode with a group of 30 or so elderly folk, who really took to the American boys and kept us entertained. The locals had us all looking for the nuclear subs hidden in the deep waters of the Loch, but some of us Yankees were too smart to fall for that one!
We visited a quaint village on the Loch, and some of the boys decided to become Scottish and purchase kilts. They haven't had the courage to wear them yet, though I hear Eric will pay them £10 if they'll do it! From there, we had a lovely dinner at a local restaurant, and were off to the US Naval base on the Clyde River to play the Clyde Centre team.
The game began precisely at 7 with traditional pagentry, greetings between the players, and the passing of gifts from the visitors to the hosts. The game consisted of 3 - 25 minute periods.
The Clyde team scored about 1/2 way through the first period with a hearty boot from one of their toughest players. The Rovers played a tight game, however, and maintained their positions. They were nervous about the unknown abilities of their opponents, but came together nicely after their first break. Their first game ever on astroturf put an interesting spin to their running and stopping skills.
During the second period, the Rover's forward Juan Granados carried a beauty down the field to score a goal from the 30. Juan's shots are stingers, and the goalie couldn't reach it. The score was tied! Beautiful plays were made by both teams, but the Rovers showed the Clyde Centre team what Olney teams are made of. Many attempts at goal were fought back from the Rovers defense and several dramatic goals were saved. The Rovers, not willing to settle for a tie, fought hard through the rest of the second period.
After the break (who knows exactly what Woody said to them?) the Rovers came out like gang-busters. They dominated the field, and were determined to make a goal. Skillful headers and beautiful, controlled passes lead to a second Rovers goal, assisted by several (too many to name), but finally placed beautifully into the goal by Brandon Garton. The battle continued for another 10 minutes, when the game was called, and the teams congratulated each other.
The Rovers were invited back to the restaurant called "The Palace" which was owned by the parents of one of the Clyde team. The boys were fed fish and chips, and the infamous "Haggas" which most of them tried, and liked! And for those, faint of stomach, pizza was served as well. The boys shared stories with each other, and were the best of soccer buddies by the end of the evening. Presentations of gifts and thanks were completed, and we were off to Glasgow University for bedtime. Some of the boys were asleep by the time we arrived home, and the rest were out shortly there after. It was a fabulous day in Scotland!
Thursday, after a two hour practice, brings the Rovers to Edinburgh where we will tour the castle and the quaint streets around the castle, head out for another dinner, and home to bed. Games are scheduled for the weekend, and we're hoping to maintain the Rover's winning record.
Many thanks to all who supported the Rovers from The Olney Soccer Club. The Rovers are proud to represent Olney, Maryland to the Scottish folk, and are having an experience of a lifetime!
Signing off for now.... from the Cybercafe of Edinburgh...

In the first game,a hard fought physical match Kira Maker shutout the Bethesda Blaze 3-0. The goals were scored by Jessie Lutz, Jenny Azarian and Arleigh Rose. The defense lead by sweeper Julia McCarty, Alliosn Eiseman, Jeannie Gordon and Casey McDonald played awesome.
In the second games against the Freestate Fireballs the Tigers won by a
score of 3-0. Kira Maker and Erin Kelly combined for the second shut of the
weekend. The goals were scored by Chelsea Prentice, Jenny Azarian tallied
her second goal of the weekend and Kira Maker. The Tigers had many chances
during the game which featured strong midfield play by Louisa Jamgochain,
Ashley Myers and Jessie Lutz. In the last match of the weekend the Tigers
played to a 3-3 tie with the FUSC Galaxy. Karly O'Brien opened the scoring a
on a brilliant run from the mid field to put the Tigers even at 1-1. Arleigh
Rose then answered with her second goal of the weekend and Chelsea Prentice
scored the third goal on a fantastic volley off a cross from Arleigh Rose.
Lizzie Kusbit, Kelly George and Kristen Capasso kept the offensive pressure
on the Galaxy keeper with many scoring opportunities.
Mckenna Smet and Nina Thurber played tough defense to
help on on for the tie. Good luck Tigers in the Semifinals

The U12 Olney Rockets girls soccer team won the championship in the PWSI Icebreaker held at Quantico, Virginia, March 24th and 25th.
The victory represents the Rockets first major tournament win. Competing in the Classic 3 division the Rockets opened with an impressive 5-0 win over the BRYC Galaxy. Two goals by Marian Dvorak set the pace for the opener.
The second game, a 3-0 victory over the SWYA Rage saw more strong defense anchored by Stephanie Matousek, and Barbara Carroll. Two goals and an assist by Allison Robinson provided the scoring punch. Sunday's 1-1 draw vs. the SYC Comets was a bit anticlimactic as the Rockets had already clinched a spot in the final.
The final match was against the undefeated Loudon United. The Rockets got an
early strike from Claire Leavengood Boxer and the defense paced this time by
Rebecca Vogel, Laura Kranish and Julie Sampson held off the relentless and
much larger United. At the final whistle, the Rockets and coach Devin Payton
celebrated the many months of winter work they had put in.

On the weekend on 3/10 & 3/11/01, the U13 Olney Rovers rolled into
Chesterfield, Virginia to try to continue it's winning ways. The team was
playing with a minimal squad, allowing for only a couple of substitutes. The
Rovers who finished the fall season as the Division Champions, went to the
Chesterfield Tournament and became the Undisputed, Undefeated U13 Silver
Champions! There were contributions from all that attended and the unselfish
"team" play that was exhibited was extraordinary!
Congratulations to Pete Wood for his leadership and coaching, and to the
Rovers on yet another great accomplishment!

The Olney Metro*Stars (Boys U-19) soccer team went undefeated in last weekend’s Bethesda Soccer Tournament played at the new Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown.
The Tournament drew over 360 teams from 8 states and was played at fields throughout the county. Boys and girls who are seniors or juniors in high school were fortunate to play on the fields of the new Soccerplex in Germantown. More than 100 college coaches were on hand observing the players as potential recruits.
The Olney team, which finished last spring’s season as number one in Division 1 of NCSL, won their bracket (the Patriots) with 3 wins and 1 tie. The tie came in the first game against one of the tournament’s host teams, Bethesda Breakers. The Metro*Stars went on to win against strong teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.
The Metro*Stars scored 13 goals in the 4-game tournament, giving up 5. The next highest scoring teams in their bracket – Cincinnati Premier White and Bethesda Breakers – each had 6.
Olney staged a come-from-behind battle with the Breakers. The score was 3-0 at the half and a red card early in the second half left the Metro*Stars playing one man down. But a penalty kick by Edward Hayden (of Magruder H.S. and a Montgomery Journal All County selection last year) helped charge up the team. Minutes later left wing Modou (Mo) Jobarteh (of Kennedy H.S.) made a perfect left footed kick into the goal off a cross from Vincent (Al) Algerson (also of Kennedy H.S.) The third game-tying goal was scored by Zach Long (of Sherwood) who took an assist from stopper Shaun Pacious (Good Counsel H.S.) through heavy traffic and put it in the net. The defense was anchored by Derrick Campbell (Gaithersburg H.S.) at sweeper, assisted with great speed and skill by backs Christian Macias (Wheaton H.S.) and Paul Smakula (Rockville). Keeper Pat Quinn’s swiftness was evidenced in 5 saves. (Quinn is also varsity goalie for Good Counsel H.S.)
In Game 2 Olney shut out Premier FC ‘81s of Harrisburg, PA and scored four goals. On the first goal, striker Jon Bernard (Springbrook H.S.) taking a cross from forward Brian Wolcott (Good Counsel) showed great composure as he faced off with the goalie and scored. Bernard got an assist on the second goal which was scored by midfielder Zach Long. The final two goals were scored by Brian Wolcott (another Journal All County selection last fall) – one with an assist from Mo Jobarteh and one that started on a cross from Jeff White (Saverna Park H.S.) leading to a 40-yard breakaway run that left defenders in the dust and ended with a sharp cross to the left corner. Cameron Hunt (of Paint Branch H.S.), playing as a guest, provided crucial support preventing the Premier team from penetrating on offense.
In the frosty cold air of Sunday morning, Game 3 yielded another high-scoring victory for Olney. The Colonial Heights Lightning of Virginia managed one goal to Olney’s four. Jon Bernard again led off, followed by Zach Long. The two final goals were scored by Jeff White, the only non-Montgomery County player on the team, who stands out both for his skill and as the largest man on the squad.
The final game put Olney against then-leader (and undefeated) Cincinnati Premier White. If the Metro*Stars were to win the Tournament, they had to defeat this team. Once again striker Jon Bernard scored the opening goal putting the team 1-0 at half time. However, a Premier goal early in the second half tied it up. Mathew McKinney (Churchill H.S.) was particularly tenacious at midfield and keeper Pat Quinn (Good Counsel) thwarted the strong Premier offense with six dramatic saves. With about 8 minutes to go, Olney’s offense moved to the goal and Brian Wolcott drilled a ball that rebounded off the Premier keeper’s chest into a melee of players. Olney forward Jorge Alvarenga (Gaithersburg H.S.) ripped a left-footed kick into the goal for the final victory point. Alvarenga’s goal won both the game and the tournament for the Olney Metro*Stars.
Coach Elton Campbell, who works in the Montgomery County School
system and is father of sweeper Derrick Campbell, is one of the few
unpaid dad-coaches at this level of competition. "I’m so proud of
how these guys pulled together," says Campbell. "It’s great
to see them have the opportunity to shine at a major tournament like
this." The games were observed by many college coaches scouting
prospects for their teams. "I think a lot of the coaches were
impressed with our speed and clean, but aggressive style of play,"
said Campbell. "I know because I’ve been hearing from them
already!" adding, "I only wish our injured players—Danny
Esteban (Good Counsel), Andrew Long (Quince Orchard H.S.) and Varnell
Smith (Quince Orchard) could have been on the field with us for this
victory."

Dear All
Trip across was great. Small delay in Iceland but we arrived safely. Accomodation is fantastic. All players are now adjusted to the time schedule.
The soccer facilities are unbelievable. Grass like carpet. The team practiced as soon as they got off the plane.
On Wed we played our first game against a very good side-Leven Thistle. We won 5-4. The players spent two hours after the game talking soccer with the other players. Hospitality is great.
Tim keeps inviting teams to the tournament so who knows who will show up in Sept.
With sightseeing underway the team prepares for its next game tonight.
Will update everyone tomorrow.

Olney United (U-15 Boys) recently earned championship honors in the U-15 Premier Red Division of the Prince William Soccer Inc. (PWSI) Icebreaker 2000 Soccer Tournament. The PWSI tournament attracted 400 teams, making it one of the largest spring preseason tournaments on the East Coast. The United, led by coach Pete Wood, outclassed excellent teams from Virginia and Massachusetts in taking top honors. Anchored by its strong defense, United was unscored upon until late in the final game. In the finals United defeated the Great Falls (VA) Cougars by a score of 5 to 1. The game was highlighted by spectacular goals scored by Patrick McKeehan, David Perez, and Ozell Wenneh and a rock-solid defense led by Bryan Campbell and Brian Smith.
Olney United finished the fall 1999 NCSL season with a record of 7-1-1,
scoring 25 goals and giving up just 3. Based on this strong performance,
United was promoted to NCSL Division 1 this spring.
United has also been accepted to participate the Premier Division of the
prestigious Voorhees (NJ) Memorial Day 2000 Tournament.
Good luck United!

The Olney Metro*Stars (Division 1/NCSL) of Montgomery Country, MD, coached by Elton Campbell, defeated the Charles River United (CRU), a Division 1 team from Boston, MA, coached by former professional player Sean Carey to take the U-17 Championship at the Virginia 2000 Soccer Tournament. The Memorial Weekend event is one of the largest tournaments on the East Coast.
The win capped a weekend in which Olney gave up only three goals in five games playing teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia as well as the CRU from Massachusetts.
The final game went into two ten-minute "golden goal/sudden death" overtimes. With only moments remaining in the second overtime, it appeared that the two well-matched teams would head into a session of Penalty Kicks to determine the Championship. The strong Olney defense led by stopper Shaun Pacious, sweeper Derrick Campbell and fullbacks Christian Macias and Jeff Chewning, subbing for the injured Paul Smakula, kept moving the ball to Olney's offense. With less than 2 minutes to play, midfielder Danny Esteban kicked passed to striker Brian Wolcott in the left corner. With the CRU keeper moving towards him, Wolcott chipped the ball over the keeper. The ball hit the left post and deflected off an on-rushing CRU player into the net.
A gracious Coach Carey remarked, "This is the way a championship game should be determined -- by strong competition. Today the better team won."
Olney advanced to the finals with strong defense and strong scoring. Olney scored 12 goals. Striker Jonathan Bernard, a varsity player at Springbrook H.S., led with 3 goals and 1 assist. Modou Jobareth of Kennedy H.S. had 2 goals and an impressive 5 assists. Wolcott, a Good Counsel junior, had 2 goals and 1 assist, drew a penalty kick and precipitated the "own goal" which won the Championship. Other scores came from Ed Hayden of Magruder H.S., Christian Macias of Wheaton H.S., Vincent (Al) Algerson of Kennedy, and Shaun Pacious and Dan Esteban, both of Good Counsel.
Goal keeper Pat Quinn, another Good Counsel junior, played an exceptional tournament, with 13 saves in the championship game. Christian Macias at fullback also showed great tenaciousness and skill. He scored the game-winning goal in the team's match against Lakota Force of Cincinnati, Ohio. "It's such a pleasure to watch this kid play," said Les Bernard, father of striker Jon Bernard, who himself played fullback for the University of Maryland, winning a national championship.
Macias was joined by Wheaton H.S. classmates Byron and Ivan Valencia, at midfield and backup goalie, respectively. The team was able to supply additional speed with Erick Jackson of Good Counsel and Jorge Alvarenga of Gaithersburg H.S., a teammate on that school's varsity with Derrick Campbell, the coach's son. Sam O'Brien and Elijah Edwards supplied size, speed and determination. O'Brien, returning after suffering a broken wrist in Maryland State Cup play, is one of 3 Kennedy H.S. players on the team. Elijah Edwards is at Richard Montgomery H.S. Defender Paul Smakula attends Rockville H.S. and Jeff Chewning is an Honor Roll student at Watkins Mill.
Moving with strength from this victory, the team looks forward to
securing its number one place in Division 1 of the
National Capitol Soccer League in an upcoming game against the
Reston Raiders of Virginia.
Says Coach Campbell, "I'm so proud of what these guys have accomplished
and how far they've come.
It shows what happens when you play with heart and as a team."

MSYSA presented the first Chevrolet Parent of the Year award at its Maryland Workshop 2000 on March 12, at Towson University's Towson Center. In establishing the Chevrolet Parent of the Year award Chevrolet and MSYSA have joined forces to recognize that the role of a soccer parent means more than just ensuring that players arrive at the game on time. It also means being the supportive coach, team manager, occasional medic, field liner, garbage picker-upper, program organizer, fund raiser, taxi driver and always, enthusiastic fan. The award is away to demonstrate Chevrolet's commitment to families and. players and to recognize the important job parents are doing to keep their kids involved in the great sport of soccer.
The Chevrolet Parent of the Year award recognizes the soccer mom or dad that has an outstanding record of participation, whether taking, the lead or just showing up for team functions and events and always providing that extra support that gives youth soccer the strong grassroots base that allows it to flourish. Worthy candidates are so devoted that they are always available when called upon to help in any way possible.
Serving as a coach, team manager or referee, while helpful in demonstrating the amount of time spent in youth soccer, are not mandatory attributes to be considered for the Chevrolet Parent of the Year. Rather, it is the many other ways that parents can be supportive and demonstrate their commitment and devotion to youth soccer that are the major distinguishing criteria for the award.
The recipient of the first MSYSA Chevrolet Parent of the Year award is Robert Dengler of the OIney Soccer Club. In presenting the award, MSYSA President Tim Miller recited numerous factors to cite "Bob's" outstanding qualifications for the award. He noted that Dengler has been active in the Olney Soccer Club for over ten years and has been an officer and board member since 1990, having served three terms as the club's President. His son Eric played for Olney teams in the National Capital Soccer League and over the years Dengler served as the team's assistant coach and manager. His daughter Kathryn played several seasons on a Calverton Soccer Club WAGS team and in 1993 Dengler formed the, Olney club's first WAGS team, coached the team for three years and was Olney's first WAGS club representative. Always looking for ways to expand, the opportunities' for Olney players, in 1991 Dengler helped start Olney's annual summer camp and recreational program. In 1996 he started Olney's in-house U-9 league and a year later was instrumental in expanding the program into the Olney/Bethesda Soccer League, one of the first travel leagues in Maryland that followed MSYSA’s philosophy of small sided play for young players.
Dengler has served as the league's administrator and MSYSA registrar since its inception. He holds a State "D" coaching license and is a USSF certified referee. As if the above was not sufficient to qualify Dengler for the award, when presenting the award, Miller cited his personal exposure to Dengler's level of devotion to the game. When MSYSA was looking for an additional field at which to hold several Snickers Maryland Cup finals in 1999, the cup director called Dengler, who gladly offered MSYSA the use of the Olney club's Route 108 field. Tim stated that he arrived at the site to find Dengler directing traffic into the parking lot and left at the end of the day with Dengler waiting at the parking lot gate ready to lock up, after seeing that all trash had been picked up and placed in containers. All this, Miller noted, when Dengler did not have a child playing in a cup final that day.
As the recipient of the 2000 MSYSA Chevrolet Parent of the Year, Dengler received a Chevrolet blanket and umbrella and a silver Parent of the Year picture frame. Thanks to the marvels of digital technology, a photograph of Dengler receiving the award was placed in the frame before he left the Workshop. In addition, Dengler will be entered in Chevrolet's National Parent of the Year competition, where the winner will receive a year's free use of a Chevrolet vehicle.
MSYSA is currently accepting nominations for its 2001 Chevrolet Parent of the Year.

The Montgomery Journal recently selected two members of the Olney Metro*Stars (U-17) to its prestigious All-County Team, midfielder/defender Edward Hayden and striker/midfielder Brian Wolcott. Both players also made last month's Gazette Newspaper's All-Star Team. However, the Journal award carries higher status because that paper selects only 11 players, not a full roster.
Edward Hayden, a junior at Magruder High School, was also selected to the Montgomery County Public Schools All Star Team. Hayden, who is a team captain for Olney, was recognized for his all around skill, his strategic sense of the game, and his ability to get the ball to the best opportunity on the field.
Brian Wolcott, a junior at Good Counsel, also won a spot on the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference's All-Star Team. The awards come based on his season record of 24 goals, the most ever scored by a player in one season at his school. Wolcott started in all 25 of Good Counsel's games, averaging almost 1 goal per outing.
Both Hayden and Wolcott stand out for their height (6'3" and 6'4", respectively) and their speed, a signature strength for the Olney Metro*Stars team. In addition to being stellar athletes, both Olney players are Honor Roll students at their respective schools.
Congratulations guys!

The Gazette Newspapers announced their all-county high school soccer team this week and it includes two members of the Olney Metro*Stars (U-17) -- midfielder/defender Edward Hayden and striker/midfielder Brian Wolcott. Both players benefit from unusual height and speed.
Edward Hayden, a junior at Magruder High School, was selected both for his all around skill and his strategic sense of the game, always moving the ball to the best opportunity on the field.
Brian Wolcott, a junior at Good Counsel, won the spot based on his record of 24 goals - the most ever scored by a player in one season at his school.
In addition to being stellar athletes, both Olney players are Honor Roll students at their respective schools. Way to go guys 7-2-0 record in NCSL play, virtually assuring a move to Division 1 in the spring. The team's final games on November 6 and 7 at Olney Soccer Club's Route 108 field provided a dramatic cap to the team's winning season.

The Olney Metro*Stars (U-17), led by Coach Elton Campbell, closed their season with a 7-2-0 record in NCSL play, virtually assuring a move to Division 1 in the spring. The team's final games on November 6 and 7 at Olney Soccer Club's Route 108 field provided a dramatic cap to the team's winning season.
In order to assure their number one place in Division 2, and hence their goal of moving to Division 1, the team needed to beat the number-one-ranked Falls Church Fireballs. That game, played Saturday, Nov. 6, was a hard fought struggle against two talented teams. It was not until the final minute of play that Olney's Jonathan Bernard scored on a free kick and the game ended in 1-0 Metro*Stars Victory.
Sunday's match against Braddock Road United was psychologically important for the team. United had been the only team to beat the Metro*Stars in spring season play. Olney had finished number one in Division 3, but both teams had moved up to Division 2. In Sunday's contest, the Metro*Star's 6'3" striker, Brian Wolcott, scored with a header off a corner kick from Jonathan Bernard in the first half, leaving the score 1-0 at the half. Midfielder Edward Hayden scored twice in the second half - first off a volley from a corner kick, again by Jonathan Bernard, and then off a cross from Bernard. The final score was 3-0. Bernard with the critical goal against the Fireballs and three assists in the final game was the hero of the weekend.
"We took a risk playing this season, with almost all of our players also starting for their high school varsity teams," noted Coach Campbell. "However, these guys are motivated and they wanted to show they belong in Division 1. It was a fluke that we were in Division 3 last spring, but I don't know of another team that has pulled off this kind of a rapid rise to Division 1. Our hard work paid off."
The team is now preparing for the Bethesda Tournament and scouting for additional talent to fill a couple spots in the more competitive upcoming Division 1 Spring season.

Olney's (U-17) Metro*Stars decisively won another championship at the recent Virginia Beach Columbus Day '99 tournament. This is the third championship for the team, coached by Elton Campbell, in this competition. It is also the third time the team (formerly Olney Alliance) has gone undefeated at Virginia Beach.
Olney won its qualifying games 4-1 and 7-0 to meet the Prince William Olympics, former Virginia State Cup Champions, in the semifinals. Metro*Stars outgunned the Olympics 2-0 and faced the Stafford Spurs in the final. Olney won the tournament with a 3-1 victory over the Spurs in a game highlighted by intelligent play and excellent ball control.
Striker Jonathan Bernard led the scoring for Olney.
Edward Hayden worked his usual magic in the midfield and Shaun Pacious
played an invaluable role as stopper.
Keeper Pat Quinn made 7 dramatic saves in one game.
The 16 goals won versus 2 given up speak to the speed, skill and
determination of this dynamic team which is also undefeated in its
NCSL games this season.
