BIOGRAPHY A young Titan of the keyboard, Hyperion Knight brings audiences to their feet with his stylistic panache and stunning bravura technique. Lauded for the "remarkable virtuosity" he displayed in his orchestral debut at age 14 in Beethoven's G major concerto, Hyperion Knight has continued to excite critics both in performance and through his numerous solo piano discs. His recording of Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition was described in The Absolute Sound as "breathtakingly textured, rich and wonderful." About his album of song transcriptions Gershwin by Knight, Stereophile commented, "Knight's control of the dynamic line is as compelling as his command of the melodic one." The American Record Guide said of his Gershwin, "The songs glitter like jewels against black satin." He has recently album on the Golden String label, a CD of romantic piano transcriptions entitled The Magnificent Steinway, was called byCD Review "one of the most enjoyable CD's of recent years." In addition to playing the piano, he recently made his conducting debut on an album entitled Rhapsody of Gershwin transcriptions for piano and orchestra on the Stereophile label . In addition to his recording career, Knight has been a featured soloist at the Rainbow Room, where for the past three years he has played everything from the classics to Broadway tunes. He is a frequent recitalist and has played with such orchestras as the Cleveland Philharmonic and the Utah Symphony. Hyperion made his New York City orchestral debut with the Jupiter Symphony playing Saint-Saëns Piano Concerto #1 in January 1998, about which Harris Goldsmith, in the New York Concert Review, remarked, "Hyperion Knight played with intoxicating élan, brilliant dexterity and a shimmering nuance." Knight's upcoming performances include Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Johnson City Symphony. An enthusiast for the great performers of the past, Hyperion is a recognized authority on historical recordings and his columns regularly appear in such journals as The Audio Adventure and Stereophile. Hyperion was born in Berkeley, California and graduated at age 19 from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. By 22 he had received Master's and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music, where he was awarded the Arthur Loesser award upon graduation. ![]()
