Educational Technology: A Faculty Resistance View. Part 1: Incentives and Understanding

Leslie E. Cummings
Educational Technology Review, Autumn 1995, No.4, p. 13-18

This article examines three categories of forces believed to discourage or prevent faculty from adopting and applying educational technology. These categories are: 1) incentives and disincentives; 2) faculty development; and 3) an ingrained model of teaching. The author suggested an aggressive faculty motivation plan to reward creativity and defuse disincentives; seminars, conference participation, and coaching as part of faculty development; and exposure of teachers to educational technology in use, along with recent advances in educational technology pedagogy, to broaden the teaching models used.
