Now that institutions rely more and more on software, either for instruction
or administration, it becomes an "asset" that benefits from careful
management. This article explains how to perform a "walk-around"
software audit, as well as what to do with the valuable data that this process
collects. Based on Exeter University's pilot project on auditing, the author
notes that dividends ranging from cost savings to ferreting out unwanted
files may result. Additional resources like the U.K.'s Universities and
Colleges Information Systems Association recent report on audit tools and
technology are also provided.
