Computer-assisted instruction (CAI) appears to be particularly promising for providing the extended practice needed to promote automaticity of mathematics skill, especially in persons with mild mental handicaps. The results of the study show no difference in addition skills but better response time for CAI students in subtraction skills. Also, extended practice was particularly effective for promoting automatization of basic facts in mathematics among those students who were initially slower.
